Cricket Feature - Our Top Ten Performances for 8th June 2024

Tons galore – and some other top performances this week

PembrokeshireSport.co.uk is delighted to produce a new  cricketing feature for your enjoyment this week as we select just some of the best performances with bat and ball this weekend (with apologies to anyone we have inadvertently missed out!)

Scott Arthur – 112 for Cresselly at Saundersfoot

Scott Arthur – 112 for Cresselly at Saundersfoot

Scott has played for almost two decades at Cresselly and has previously reached three figures for the club’s second string as a very reliable opening bat – but this was his first-ever century in the first division. He struck 17 fours and three sixes from his 94 balls faced and shared in big stands with Phil Williams and Alex Bayley – so well done Scott!

Steve Mills  119 and 2 for 28 for against Carew at Pill Parks

Steve Mills  119 and 2 for 28 for against Carew at Pill Parks

Steve caught the eye with bat and ball against Carew but still ended up on the losing side as Carew’s greater overall consistency paid off. ‘Millsy’ was an under-rated player in his younger days but is now rightly regarded as one of the top all-rounders as he followed his 118 at Lawrenny the previous week as he helped his side win. He is also capable of batting at a high tempo, as his heap of boundaries in this game showed!

David Dredge – 121 not out for Lamphey  against Carew 2nds

David Dredge – 121 not out for Lamphey  against Carew 2nds

David started playing for The Stags a relatively short time ago and immediately was noted as a class act with bat and ball – and this innings certainly confirmed the former skill. It also demonstrated the ups and downs of cricket because a week earlier he had been dismissed for a second-ball duck in a heavy defeat at home to Burton before carrying his bat in this game. David is now club captain and is sure to amass plenty of runs over the campaign!

Joe Mansfield - 102 not out for Llechryd against Herbrandston

Joe Mansfield - 102 not out for Llechryd against Herbrandston

Joe showed his powers of concentration as he opened the innings and was still there at the end with his gritty unbeaten century out of a total of 152 all out – a great performance indeed! The game was played at Fishguard (well done to them for their willingness to share their facility at Tregroes) because Llechryd’s ground is still being redeveloped – and the importance of Joe’s performance can be gauged by the fact that it helped his club inflict a first defeat of the season against high-flying Herbie!

Joe Crellin 74 and 6 for 53 for Llanrhian at Pembroke Joe Crellin 74 and 6 for 53 for Llanrhian at Pembroke

Joe Crellin is another relative newcomer to local cricket who is also well-known as someone who takes part in challenging athletics events, but has also made his mark with bat and ball for Llanrhian at Lladigige Fawr – and on Saturday showed his skills with bat and ball as he was easily their top performer. But he still ended up on the losing side against Pembroke, whose Treleet Ground was also to his liking as he scored 74 and also claimed 6 for 53. Pembroke batted well throughout as Billy Wood smashed 96 but fell just short of a century but it was Joe who did well for the visitors!

Jac Scourfield – 102 not out for Carew Thirds at Pembroke Dock 2nds Jac Scourfield – 102 not out for Carew Thirds at Pembroke Dock 2nds

Congratulations to 21-year-old Jac Scourfield as he celebrated his first-ever century for Carew as they reached a huge 258 for 2 on the usual belter of a track at Imble Lane as almost 500 runs were scored on the afternoon. Like his father Nick before him, Jac is a very useful early-order batsman and shared in a huge partnership with Robbie Hicks. Jac stroked 13 boundaries en route to his undefeated century and everyone at the club was delighted for him on such a memorable day for him!

Robbie Hicks – 105 and 1 for 23 for Carew Thirds in the same game

Robbie Hicks – 105 and 1 for 23 for Carew Thirds in the same game

They say that there is no age limit to class and Robbie Hicks showed that at Imble lane as he added another three-figure score to many before this back to the time when he was playing as an opening bat for Wales and helping his club to trophies galore. He also claimed 1 for 23 in his bowling spell as he continues to turn out and nurture the wealth of young talent turning out for The Rooks’ third team.

Luke Murray – 132 not out for Pembroke Dock Seconds in defeat against Carew Thirds

Luke Murray – 132 not out for Pembroke Dock Seconds in defeat against Carew Thirds

Luke Murray became the third centurion in this match against Carew 2nds, an unusual occurrence which again demonstrated the quality of the Imble Lane wicket. Luke is rightly regarded as a very powerful stroke-maker who has also made runs for the first team and this game saw his undefeated innings littered with fours and sixes but it wasn’t quite enough as they fell short of chasing down a massive target – but it was the day’s top score in the league, nonetheless!

Craig Williamson – 6 for 9 for Hundleton against Llangwm Seconds

Craig Williamson – 6 for 9 for Hundleton against Llangwm Seconds

The match between Hundleton’s first team and Llangwm 2nds didn’t last long and someone who was mainly responsible for that was Craig Willimson, whose 6 for 9 spell reduced the visitors to 36 all out before the south-county village side lost one wicket in reaching their lowly target. Williamson was man of the match in last season’s Ken Morris Cup Final as his wicket left-arm swing bowling caused havoc and this match was no different – and the big feller is also a very good No 8 when he has time to play rugby for Pembroke RFC!

Tyler Reynolds – 102 not out for Laugharne 2nds at Stackpole 2nds

Tyler Reynolds – 102 not out for Laugharne 2nds at Stackpole 2nds

Tyler Reynolds is perhaps better known as a talented young full back with the Laugharne RFC which won silverware last season but he showed he is a sporting all-rounder as he struck 16 fours and two big sixes en route to his unbeaten century as his side gained a comfortable win at Stackpole. It was something of a family day out because his twin brother Lennon was with him when he reached three figures because he was undefeated on 41. It is good to see the Reynolds brothers turning out for Laugharne, who are eager to develop their playing strength and these teenagers are just the job!

Big performances just missing out on our top ten:

Also, well worthy of a mention but missing out by a whisker in our opinion, (sorry chaps but they are pretty good nonetheless!) are three Burton Boyos in skipper Toby Hayman (91) and Joe Kiff (80) in a powerful opening partnership, plus vice-captain Dan Llewellyn (38 not out and 4 for 14).
Martin James also smashed 89 for Burton Seconds and Thomas Cole (79) was in fine fettle for Lawrenny alongside an unbeaten 95 for Richard Webb and the afore-mentioned Mr Wood in Pembroke)
