Pembroke CCC Indoor League – Umpires’ Spirit of Cricket Award

 

 

This year, for the first time, a Spirit of Cricket Award was presented. The award was the idea of the Indoor League umpires Chris Stapleton, Rob Bellerby, Neill Crawshaw, Steve Williams and Jon Willington, who also sponsored the award. It was recognised by the umpires’ group that the overall conduct and spirit of the teams in the indoor league has again been excellent this season and a step up on what they generally experience in outdoor cricket.
 
In presenting the award, Jon Willington emphasised what a difference it makes when teams adhere to the spirit of cricket; the principles of respect for each other, opponents and umpires, fair play, discipline, accepting umpires’ decisions and players creating a positive atmosphere through their conduct making for an enjoyable experience for all involved. The award was presented to team members Karl davies and Billy Clarke because Iwan James, captain of Llanrhian Cricket Club, had been taken ill whilst playing and sadly had to go home.
 
Llanrhian were, in the opinion of the umpires, the team that had embodied the Spirit of Cricket throughout the season. Congratulations go to every player who has represented Llanrhian this season.
 
**PembrokeshireSport.co.uk was in attendance for all of the Monday evening games and most of those played on Wednesdays, and we can fully endorse the sentiments expressed about the high levels of sportsmanship because we didn’t witness a single show of dissent – and the teams got on really well as they changed together and were in conversations before and after games.
 
The five umpires mentioned also deserve a huge pat on the back, not only for making sure that every game had officials but also for their part in sharing the enjoyment of the games – with some scorers also deserving a pat on the back for their regular attendance and involvement in the smooth running of the evenings!.
