Top Performances of the Weekend - 13th July 2024

1. Charlie Malloy (101) for Herbrandston versus Pembroke Dock

Charlie MalloyIf, as seems very likely at this moment in time, Herbrandston gain promotion to the first division it seems that one of the main contributory factors will be the all-round skills of Charlie Malloy, who is only 18 but plays like someone who has been around the cricketing scene for a lot longer.

Charlie was at it again Saturday as he stroked 101 against Pembroke Dock in a Herbie total of 225 for 4 and then grabbed two early wickets to help his side to victory by 93 runs. His latest century contained 14 boundaries as Harry Nicholas also batted well again for 52 in opening stand with Charlie of 123.

Harry Thomas

2. Harry Thomas (5 for 16) for Lawrenny against Cresselly

Harry Thomas has been in really could form of late and continued it with a 5 for 16 haul as Cresselly were dismissed for 158 as Rhys Eynon also picked up a couple of wickets - and also chipped in with 22 runs against his former team of a while ago. It wasn’t quite enough, however, as the opposition edged home in a typically hard-fought local derby.

Dan James

3. Dan James (5 for 16) for Cresselly at Lawrenny

Dan James achieved his best figures for some time in this local derby at Lawrenny, an excellent bowling performance that matched that of Harry Thomas and that helped his team bounce back to winning ways by just 13 runs.

Karl Rhead and Jon Pawlett 4. Karl Rhead (88) and Jonathan Pawlett (85) for Tish in defeat at home to Narberth

Tish old timers Karl Rhead and Jonathan Pawlett helped them to a huge total against Narberth to show that both are still forces to be reckoned with. Karl is a member of the Welsh Seniors’ squad and stroked 11 fours and 3 sixes from his berth as opener whilst Jonathan, who is now the club captain, had 8 fours and a six - and Phil Llewellyn also had a good half century.

But it was all in vain because their huge tally of 244 for 5 was chased down by Narberth, with the Quartermaine clan to the fore.

The Quartermaines 5. Ben Quartermaine (77) and Kyle Quartermaine (64) for Narberth as they beat St Ishmaels

The Quartermaine brothers certainly led Narberth to victory with their batting prowess and their younger step-brother Loui Davies (3 for 46) made it a triple family triumph with his bowling.
Ben had 7 fours and a six in his top score whilst Kyle slammed 7 fours and 2 sixes.

When I asked him would he mind if I used a picture from a while ago because it was the only one I had, Kyle said it was brilliant – Just the job.

“It will show me carrying a lot less timber,” he chuckled, “so just get it on site, please!”

Mikey Jones
6. Mikey Jones (75) for Haverfordwest at Llangwm

After a bad start to the season Haverfordwest are beginning to look more settled in the division and matches against old rivals Llangwm are traditionally real battles - as was this most recent one where The Town eventually chased down a challenging score of 190 to win by 5 wickets.

Leading the way was opener Mikey Jones, who looked in good form with some early straight drives that ensured the scoreboard clicked over and he ended up with nine fours and a six - and was ably assisted by Adam James, who belied his aching bones to take a wicket and the best catch I’ve seen this season - and then five sixes in his speedy 44 that made sure the tempo never dropped.

Jack Jones

7. Jack Jones (100) for Llanrhian at Johnston

Jack Jones is a very talented sporting all-rounder as a key back-rower with St Davids RFC and cricketer at Llanrhian, for whom he struck 100 at Glebelands, including eight fours and four big sixes as the main contributor to his team’s 207 for 9, as skipper Iwan James chipped in with 38 runs. Jack also bowled quickly and picked up a wicket, and fielded well, as Johnston were limited to 180 for 7 in reply.

Aled Phelps 8. Aled Phelps (103 not out) for Hook versus Burton

Hook have one of the youngest captains in the county in Aled Phelps and he was on great form with the bat as his team entertained league leaders and his excellent undefeated century helped them to victory by 10 runs in a high-scoring tussle which could have gone either way.

Aled had nine fours and three sixes en route to his unbeaten ‘ton’ and another nice moment for the Phelps’ family was the fact that he was joined by dad Jamie, helping out from the seconds, where he is now skipper, plus brothers Owen and Rhys.

Andy Tait

9. Andy Tait (5 for 48) versus Pembroke

Andy Tait arrived at Lamphey a few years ago and immediately impressed with his pace bowling, but also his batting skills, and it was the former technique that earns him a mention as he claimed 5 for 48 in his team’s local derby against Pembroke. I’m reliably informed that Andy is an accurate bowler whose variations of pace are a valuable asset and we think we are right in sayin as we give him a first mention on our site, that he was also and English Schools’ hockey player before he came to God’s own county!

Ffion Ashman 10. Ffion Ashman (65 not out) Hundleton 2nds v Haverfordwest

Congratulations to Ffion Ashman on being the only female player to catch the eye on Saturday as she top scored for Hundleton and shared an unbroken century stand with talented teenager Elliott Midgley.

‘Ashy’ is a regular for Cresselly Ladies, who played against Hook Ladies in the Clive Huxley Final the next day, and showed her all-round skills, as she has done for many years, in helping Cresselly to a comfortable win.

She is also regarded as one of the top goalkeepers in the Welsh Women’s Premier League, following in the footsteps of her dad Mark, also known as ‘Ashy’ and, like her, a genuine character!

 Sion Vaughan11. Sion Vaughan (88) Crymych v Cresselly 3rds

23-year-old Sion Vaughan launched 7 fours and then 5 big sixes over the boundary rope for Crymych at the local school ground and his speedy run-getting helped his side win by 51 runs against Cresselly 3rds. From nearby Hermon, Sion is only in his 3rd season of cricket and also took 3 for 29 in his seven overs as Crymych are battling for promotion alongside Herbrandston 2nds and Haverfordwest 3rds – and if Sion can continue in this mode then they are well on the way already!

Ian Sefton Jeremy Griffiths12. Ian Sefton (97) and Jeremy Griffiths (6 for 31) for Carew Thirds v Hundleton

Carew do a great job of using their third XI, which plays in the fourth division on the picturesque Tony Scourfield Memorial Ground overlooking Carew Castle, to blood talented teenagers in the senior side of the club - but when they took on high-flying Hundleton it was certainly a case of the old-timers playing a big part in their 14-run win.

Jeremy Griffiths made his debut as a 12-year-old and now, 47 years later, helped out in his second match of the season and claimed 6 for 31, the second time in his career he has grabbed so many wickets. ‘Carrots’ is Carew through and through but I bet he was pretty stiff the next day.
Ian Sefton, now in his mid-40s and helping out, blasted 97 in their big total and it must be great for the ‘Carew Kids’ to be learning from such great club servants!
