The people who count in Pembrokeshire Cricket - Part One
PembrokeshireSport.co.uk is very lucky to be able to provide our unrivalled coverage of cricket in our county because of the expert scorers who do such a great job in the top echelon, whose scorebooks are works of art – whilst some of them have also taken to using the ‘Play Cricket’ app to spread the news even further afield as far as Australia, South Africa, India and many other countries where former Pembrokians now live.
Tonight we start off with three of the longest-serving scorers and over the next week or so, PembrokeshireSport.co.uk will be telling you just a little bit more about these great supporters of cricket in the top two echelons – they all deserve a medal!
And if you know anyone else who does the job on a regular basis in divisions three to six – give us a ring on 07807 054743 and we will be delighted to applaud them in print too!
Adge takes pride of place as he steps down from the game
Pride of place this campaign has to go to my old pal
Adge John, who is held in such esteem at
Saundersfoot CC but has now retired from his role because of his failing eyesight – and will be sorely missed by The Seasiders.
Adge was a good wicketkeeper/batsman with Kilgetty, Narberth and Saundersfoot, playing in Harrison-Bowl and Duggie Morris Finals, and also as an adept goalkeeper in football with Kilgetty, Narberth and Saundersfoot where he won the Senior Cup as a player and assistant manager.
Despite his growing difficulties, Adge has always been ready to supply us with scores at tea and after matches, and I shall miss our little chats – but we will keep in touch and I am already in love with his new guide dog, named ‘Skip’!
Jayne has scored for an amazing 40 years and still makes her regular trips down the M4 to score
Jayne Cole is very much another star of scoring since she started out as an 8-year-old as part of a cricket-mad family at Haverfordwest CC, took a rest for a while and has completed 40 years where she has not only scored at 19 Harrison-Allen Bowl Finals (The Town won ten of them!) but been a huge help to new scorers with her friendly advice and patience in helping them early on.
Perhaps even more amazing is the fact that Jayne makes a return journey of 100+ miles to score each week, is very adept at using ‘Play Cricket’ as well as anyone I know, and has put up with my requests for details for over 30 years! You really do a great job for your club, Jayne!
Wendy is the top Tish person who is loved by all at her club
It is a bit of a cliché when we say that if a person left a club it would be in trouble but chat to players young and old at St Ishmaels and they would certainly say that is so in the case of Wendy Bradshaw, who is not only the Hon Sec but also the Child Safety Officer – and completes her hat-trick by having scored for the first team over many years.
She has also provided invaluable advice to newcomers from other clubs when they have joined her in the scorebox, taking time to help them through is sometimes a demanding start until they get to know the players and umpires!
If there is anything going on at Tish then ‘Aunty Wendy’ will be involved – and she has even been known to sponsor players if they score a 50 or take five wickets.
Her scorebook is fantastic, she is very adept at using ‘Play Cricket’ and is the club’s unofficial press officer who has all the patience in the world when dealing with nuisances like us who need details. Like everyone else at the club Mrs B, we don’t know what we would do without you there!
