The People Who Count - Part Three

In today’s part of this special feature, we have actually included four clubs from this season’s top echelon, including the lovely lady from Carew, plus Narberth,  Llangwm and Cresselly, who are lucky to have more than one really good lady scorer, the last-named where the two youngest scorers are involved.

Next week we will mention the ‘People Who Count’ from the second division – and invite clubs who have regular scorers in divisions three to six to contact us on 07807 054743 and tell us a little about them too!

Julie DaviesJulie Davies would readily admit that she stepped in at Carew when her son Rhys became heavily involved and she had to dive in at the deep end, readily admitting it was a scary start but that she had great help from more experienced scorers from other clubs.

Since then, Julie has proved to be invaluable for The Rooks because she is ever-ready to help out and I tease her that in the last two years she has acquired more medals than any cricketer because she has also scored for the seconds and youth teams in their cup successes!

But above all else she is really helpful in supplying scorers at tea time and the end of matches, always with a smile and a cheery word that would brighten anyone’s day – and a quick look at her scorebook reveals how much of a picture it looks with special colour coding for each bowler and batsman, which creates a real impact if you need specific details.

And, like Mr Laugharne yesterday, she is the provider of a whole range of sweets from her box, and doesn’t mind in the least if some of us actually sneak out more than one to chew as we walk around the boundary. Thanks Jules!

Carmen HaltamGwynneth JohnsCarmen Haltam was another who stepped in to help when it was needed and now takes charge of the Narberth scorebook almost every weekend. She is another who admits that her cricketing knowledge was not her strongest point when she took over – but she has quickly grown into her role and, like most ladies who do the job, really takes pride on the presentation of her scorebook.

She is a very calm lady and doesn’t seem to mind when I interrupt her, sometimes at nerve-jangling moments during a game, offering to phone me back at the earliest possible opportunity.

She is clearly regarded as very much part of the match-day team at Narberth – and on odd occasions whenever she is unavailable the club is lucky to have TWO other knowledgeable ladies who are always happy to fill the gap. Gwynneth Johns has supported her husband Mike, sons Matthew and Davy, and now 12 year old grandson Ollie for nigh on 50 years in the club so she certainly knows her cricketing onions.

 Rhian Howell

Then there’s Rhian Howell, whose hubbie Richard is part of the current backbone of the club, along with their son Jordan, and her involvement alongside Richard in the Ken Morris Cup organisation is paramount – so the club has its own trio of scorers.

Janice BrickSara JeffreyFor many years Jeff Saies was a real character as scorer of Llangwm CC but when he was unable to continue his sister, Janice Brick, stepped in and has since done a fantastic job of keeping score for the club. Janice, whose sons Darren and Simon played at Pill Parks, is Llangwm through and through so when her new neighbour, Sara Jeffrey, told her that she liked cricket and had scored years ago in Buckinghamshire, Janice not only roped her in to share the Saturday afternoon duties in the scorebox but also become the club’s Hon Secretary!

And now the pair share the duties and each is adept at not only working closely with the umpires but acting as unofficial press offers in dealing with the likes of PembrokeshireSport.co.uk every Saturday during the season. Janice is delighted to have recruited Sara, who says she has been made very welcome by all the other scorers, and Janice continues to be held in huge respect by all at Llangwm Cricket Club!

Cerys Jenkins

The two youngest scorers have found their role at Cresselly Cricket Club because initially they played the game, with Cerys Jenkins playing for the ladies’ team until a nasty injury prevented her playing again – so she took over the scoring role a few years ago and has been one of the first in the county to take on the work involved with ‘Play Cricket’.

But her work with cattle on the family farm means that Saturdays has become more difficult because it is the day she is off showing their pedigree Hereford, Jersey and Friesian Cattle at shows all over South Wales and this could be her final year in the role in which she has done so well for the club.

Phoenix Phillips

So stepping in and also doing a great job has been the even younger Phoenix Phillips, who not only plays at Cresselly but has also represented Pembrokeshire Ladies – and every Saturday she is with the club’s first team because her father Christian is a key member of the first team. So PembrokeshireSport.co.uk has to say au revoir to our pal Cerys and say that the club is very lucky to have Phoenix ready to carry on with her excellent work!
