Oscar and Finley LewisA superb hat-trick by 15 year old Lawrenny bowler Oscar Lewis was the feature of his side’s last-over win against second-division Burton, who opted to bat first, could only muster a pretty average score after so much recent rain - but deserve every credit for the way that they took their first-division opposition to the very last over before missing out.

Burton bat first but lose five wickets in reaching 35

Batting first was a positive move by Burton skipper Toby Hayman, but his hopes of batting Lawrenny out of the game suffered two big early hits as Joe Kiff could only manage a single from nine balls faced, caught by Rob Williams off a ricochet off another fielder to give Oscar Lewis his first wicket.

Then another key run-getter in Jon Venables was bowled by veteran pace man Rob Williams for another single before Jack Davies departed without facing a ball thanks to the fielding prowess of Troy Pursloe, the Aussie all-rounder, whose direct hit left Davies stranded and Burton in bother at 15 for 3.

Toby Hayman stood at the other end as all this happened but with the score on 32 he also departed as he was bowled on 17 in 22 deliveries with two fours to his name and three balls later his vice-captain Dan Llewellyn was caught for a duck by Rhys Eynon off Rob Williams.

Burton bounce back before Oscar goes into over-drive

At 35-5 it looked as if Burton had bombed any hopes they had but Morgan Scale and Luke Hayman started to rebuild, both showing what good all-rounders they are in a partnership of 32, before the latter was bowled by Morton (23) after facing 23 balls and belting three fours.

There was another productive partnership of 37 between Scale and Nick Jones but then young Oscar Lewis struck with a vengeance as he had Scale caught by Pursloe for 31 (44 balls and two boundaries) off the first ball of the 21st over - and then clean-bowled Dan Ridge and David Lewis
from the next two deliveries as he ended up with the fine figures of 4 for 18 as Burton ended up on 108 all out, as his brother Finley, Rob Williams and skipper Morton also bowled well.

Lawrenny start well as Thomas and Allen look to build a solid start

Harry Thomas is a very experienced all-rounder and he was joined by the youthful Will Allen in making sure that Lawrenny didn’t get into a pickle at the start as they put on 53 for the opening wicket, albeit taking 13 overs to do so before Will Allen top-edged a return catch to Jack Davies, having belted two sixes and four fours en route to 35 in 47 balls.

It was time for Lawrenny to get a touch of the jitters as they also lost Thomas (16 from 29 deliveries) and Wil Nicholas (4) in the space of ten runs - but then Pursloe and Morton added 36 runs in reasonable time to make sure that Lawrenny didn’t need any huge run-rate increases - so that although Morton departed for 15  (including a six and four) to give Jack Davies his second wicket they were still relatively calm.

Thomas Cole also went cheaply as Morgan Scale finished as the best Burton player with 3 for 29, but No 3  Pursloe put all his experience to good effect as he ended on 25 not out in as many balls, including two boundaries.

Joe Kidney joined him at the finish, with five balls in hand, but Lawrenny knew they had been in a tough tussle and Burton deserved every credit for battling to the very end of an absorbing clash played out in front of a large crowd at Kilgetty.
