‘Old Timers A’ again show they can still play cricket
Pembs Seniors A (109 for 2) beat Lawrenny (92 for 4) by 17 runs
Pembs Seniors A’s average age was almost three times that of opponents Lawrenny but they showed there is no substitute for experience as they batted first to reach 109 for 2 and then resisted the youthful zest of their opponents, for whom Alfie Bucke is the oldest at 21!
Andrew Williams (22) and Alan Webster (27) got the Seniors off to a good start which was maintained by ‘Mr Reliable’ Kevin Bowen (26 not out) and David Haynes, whose little legs took him to an unbeaten 16, before the even shorter legs of Huw Scriven got him run out for a duck and Jonathan Pawlett chipped in with a late 9 not out, alongside 11 extras.
Noah Williams claimed 1 for 26 and his cousin Taylor Lewis bowled good spells for Lawrenny, and Taylor also batted well with 22 late on before he was run out.
Alfie Buckle belted a typically brisk 23 whilst brothers Finley and Oscar Lewis had 25 not out and 18 respectively but Jonathan Pawlett grabbed 2 for 3 to show what an asset he is going to be, as well as lowering the average age. Webster only conceded 10 runs in two tight overs but Mr Haynes managed to balance things up with his similar spell going for 38 runs!
Kevin Bowen claimed 1 for 22 and Andrew Williams 0 for 21 and in the final analysis The Seniors were good value for victory – but again Lawrenny showed that if the stick together next season they will be a force to be reckoned with!
Seniors B battered by Burton big hitters
Burton (147 for 5) beat Pembs Seniors B (82 for 4) by 65 runs
Burton showed what a powerful force they could be in indoor cricket if they were able to call on all their key players but even without a number of them and including a new recruit in George Traykov, who hails from Bulgaria but now works locally and is a keen supporter of the club, they smashed the biggest score of the evening and then restricted the Pembs Seniors B to a total far below what they needed.
Leading the way for Burton was all-rounder Morgan Scale, who joined the fray from No 4 and on two visits to the crease scored a typically classy 43 not out, ably assisted by Dan John (26), Harry Owen (27), plus brothers Dan (21) and Will Ridge (31) as the team belted eight sixes and only George, who was bowled by Julian Forster (1 for 36) in the inevitable late run glut and failed to trouble the scorers!
Jonathan Williams (2 for 36) was the other successful Seniors’ bowler as Ian Milsom and Dave Lockyer also bowled tidy two-over stints.
Needing 15 runs per over to create a surprise win it is fair to say that they didn’t get off to a flying start as openers Jonathan Williams (5) and Martin Thomas (3) soon came and went and at the half-way stage Dave Lockyer and Dan Griffiths managed to stem the flow of wickets but at the cost of a run rate that had escalated to over 20 runs per over as they were standing on 41 for 2.
Lockyer eventually retired on a battling 26 and Griffiths ended up unbeaten on 17 as both Forster and Milsom were run out cheaply late on and their total was only at the stage it was thanks to 20 extras as Harry Owen (1 for 8) was their most successful bowler, and there were miserly spells from Morgan Scale and Dan Ridge in support.
Herbie beat The Thunder in low-scoring tussle
Herbrandston (79 for 5) beat Haverfordwest Thunder (46 all out) by 33 runs
Herbrandston elected to bat first against Haverfordwest Thunder but at the interval must have thought they had made a mistake after achieving a low score - but then they collectively rolled up their sleeves as they bowled and fielded really well and shot out the opposition in only 7.4 overs to win by 33 runs as the new ball’ movement caused lots of problems in both camps.
Herbie lost Atticus Kingston without scoring and Callum Power (6) before Charlie Malloy (27) and Robbie Hood (23) shared the only partnership of note to at least give their side something to bowl at as ‘Mr Extras; was next top scorer on 13, with teenager Dillon Lewis chipping in late on with 7 not out after Dai Malloy had also failed to fire.
For The Thunder, there were useful bowling figures by Farham Wadiwala (2 for 11) alongside Mark Evans (1 for 18), Bokhara Ali, Mo Ahner (0 for 14) and Mudit Jain (1 for 11).
The Thunder made an awful start to their reply as Marc Evans and Bokhara Ali failed to score and Jason Stobbs (2) also went, with Atticus Kingston atoning for his earlier duck with a splendid 2 for 11 spell and Charlie Malloy (1 for 11) as there was also a duck for Mo Ahmer and 8 for Farham Wadiwala as they slumped to 16 for 5.
Only Mudit Jain ever looked settled as he reached 29, including two sixes, but then Dillon Lewis, the youngest player in the game, had him caught behind by Dai Malloy to see Herbie finish as surprisingly easy winners!
