Men's Indoor Cricket - Division Two - Week Eleven

Indoor Cricket – Stop Press News:

Big matches for Neyland and Pembroke before the Welsh Finals

Iwan James - captain of the Pembrokeshire Select squadNext Monday evening (20th January) there are two extra games of indoor cricket that have a two-fold purpose – and it is hoped that a good crowd will pop in to the Neyland Community Hub to watch them being played, starting at 6.30pm.

Firstly, it is to celebrate Neyland’s winning again of the first division and Pembroke coming second for the first time ever – and both will play a Select County team from eight selected players, captained by Iwan James of Llanrhian, with some playing in both games and others playing just once.

Secondly, it is the first time that Pembrokeshire are able to send two teams to the Welsh Finals in Swansea, on Sunday, 2nd February, starting at 10am, where Neyland will play first against Ynystawe and then Pembroke will play Ynysygerwn before the final, which will take place in the afternoon.

It is hoped by excellent organiser Patrick Hannon that these games will provide an extra competitive edge to both teams when they take on the top Swansea sides.

PembrokeshireSport.co.uk , which is proud of the fact that we are the only sports media outlet to provide reports and photographs of every game in the indoor league season, wishes both teams every success – and as usual we will be there with them to give them the coverage they deserve!

Pembs Seniors B - won their first match of the season

Seniors B finally break their duck

Neyland B (99 for 2) lost to Pembs Seniors B (100 for 3) by 3 wickets

Pembs Seniors B were finally rewarded for their enthusiasm in adversity as they followed several heavy defeats with an improved all-team performance that saw them win their basement battle with Neyland B.

It looked at one stage as if the Neyland side might amass a very big score as Charlie French and John Tennick rocketed them off to a flying start but The Seniors had excellent bowling performances from Julian Forster, Jason Phillips and especially Mike Williams which prevented them even reaching triple figures.

The Seniors had a similar strong start and looked odds on for victory, but they too suffered a blip after they lost their key batsmen and needed four from the last two balls, bowled by the very experienced Tennick - but kept their nerve so that Mike Williams rounded off an excellent performance by the 60-year-old as he straight-drove a boundary to set off celebrations by Jonathan Williams and his Seniors B side!

Charlie runs wild – but then loses his head

For Neyland B, Charlie French has been in good form of late as he took a single off Ian Milsom’s first delivery and then belted five successive boundaries - but then Williams conceded only three runs in the second over and then Jason Phillips removed French from his third ball as the youngster was clean bowled, trying to play an outrageous reverse sweep!

Tennick (27) was joined by skipper Jamie Smith (25) in a very good spell for Neyland as both retired but then the pendulum swung back as Tom Pritchard made a welcome return for Neyland but was clean bowled for only two runs by Mike Williams, whose 1 for 4 analysis paid due tribute to his accuracy.

Kacey Arran (9) and Mason Kerrison (11) remained unbeaten as they provided late runs against Forster (0 for 9) and Phillips (1 for 9), who bowled decent spell- but Milsom (0 for 36) and skipper Jon Williams (0 for 32) weren’t quite so accurate!

Jon Williams (25) and keeper Martin Thomas (26) were in excellent nick, especially with their running between the wickets after one poorly-judged call almost resulted in a run-out that brought Thomas back to his cricketing senses.

Jason Phillips (10) started well alongside Mike Williams before he was run out - but Williams kept things going as Julian Forster was run out for 2 after hitting the ceiling and then risking a single that failed miserably.

Ian Milsom was at the other end when Williams finished things off as Pritchard (0 for 13), Smith (0 for 17) and French (0 for 17) bowled well without success, with 10 runs from ‘Mr Extras’ helping the ‘Old Stagers’ to victory in a cracking contest played in the best of spirits.

Haverfordwest Thunder caused a club surprise

‘Thunder’ too strong for Town team-mates ‘Lightning’

Haverfordwest Lightning (100 for 3) lost to Haverfordwest Thunder (101 for 3) by 3 wickets

Haverfordwest Thunder certainly turned the tables on their senior side “Lightning’ as Suleiman Safi and All Mohammed Bokhari led the way with bat and ball.

Batting first, the Lightning lost powerful opening bat Shan Pereira (4), who went cheaply to one of his hospital colleagues as Bokhari took a good return catch in his miserly 1 for 13 spell.

Ben Field made a welcome return to action with 27 before he retired and Peter Soulsby (25) did the same as the run rate climbed so that at the half-way stage the senior team of their innings they were in a healthy position on 70 for 1.

Dylan Lee also contributed a nicely-compiled 20 alongside 17 extras (often from wild throws) as Dylan Goodridge was run out for 6 and James Marchant had 1 not out as Field returned very late on but was run out for 30 in a desperate late surge for more runs after the Lightning had struck three fours and three sixes - but also wasted 28 ‘dot balls; almost half their allotted total, from which no runs accrued.

On the bowling front, Bokhari clearly led the way but had excellent support from Mo Asher (0 for 18) and Suleman Safi, (0 for 13, including an excellent rare maiden over)!

The Thunder’s batting followed a very similar pattern as they lost a key run-maker in Mudit Jain for 4 as he was fooled by a Dylan Lee full toss which removed his leg stump - and then the talented teenager shifted Jason Stubbs for a duck as James ‘Tacky’ Marchant pouched the catch to earn Lee fine figures of 2 for 21.

At that stage the Lightning were favourites to win but Safi joined Bokhari at the crease and the game was transformed in their favour as the latter retired for an excellent 25 and Safi contributed an unbeaten 30.

Then skipper Mark Davies added 9 before he was run out and Mo Asher ended on 19 not out so that The Thunder fended of The Lightning with an over still in hand, as Peter Soulsby was left high and dry with 0 for 4 from his solitary over as The Thunder clearly enjoyed their first win, especially at the expense of the club’s supposedly senior side!
