Neyland A march on as second half of season starts
Neyland A maintained their unbeaten tag as they continue to dominate the top of the table - and in their first game in the second half of the league programme they proved too strong for a Pembroke Dock team which at the moment is finding it hard to score at a high-enough tempo to put pressure on opposing teams.
There were also comfortable wins for Llanrhian (against Pembroke B) and Hook (who accounted for Pembroke A as batsmen found it hard to cope with the swing of the new balls supplied by excellent organiser Patrick Hannon.
Llanrhian (131 for 3) beat Pembroke B (93 for 3) by 40 runs
Llanrhian started the second half of their programme with this convincing win over a struggling Pembroke B team as they battled well to build a high total and then bowled and fielded better than their opposition to keep alive their hopes of a podium finish after another five weeks of play.
Openers Daf Williams and skipper Iwan John gave them an excellent start as they reached 40 in fewer than four overs before Williams was run out for 24 in 16 deliveries, whilst James retired on 28 (in only 17 deliveries).
Russell Watkins maintained their momentum with a four and six in his 28 (19 balls) and Karl Davies chipped in with 23 not out before the innings ended on 131 for 3 as ‘Mr Extras’ also chipped in with 18 runs.
Pembroke suffered an early blow when Will Davies departed for a duck, caught low down by Daf Williams off Karl Davies (1 for 18), and Andrew Tait is still coming to terms with the indoor game as he scored 7 off 13 balls before he was caught by Llion Williams off his namesake Daf.
Ceri Brace retired on 27 (two fours) but Pembroke were well behind the required run rate although Andrew Price ended on 16 not out and Hassan Azziz belted a late 21 not out in only 12 balls.
Toby Bradley-Watson chipped in with 10 runs and there were 12 extras - but Llanrhian were good value for victory as they completed the double over Pembroke B.
Pembroke A (74 for 5) lost to Hook (75 for 2) by four wickets
Pembroke A completed a disappointing club evening in terms of results, well beaten by Hook as they were outplayed in all aspects of the game.
Pembroke suffered an early body blow when skipper Jack Harries (5)) returned to the fold but was bowled by a cracking in-swinger by Harry Makepeace, and vice-captain Luke Butler departed for 15 in 16 balls.
Billy Wood was in his usual aggressive batting mode as he belted one four and two sixes in his speedy 22 (12 balls) but became Owen Phelps’ second victim in an excellent 2 for 11 analysis.
Makepeace’s left-arm pace went even better as he finished with 2 for 8 as he shifted Sam Davies for a six-ball duck and it was left to the other Davies boys, Callum (run out for 11) and Jack (12 not out) to take Pembroke A to 74 for 5 in their allotted 12 overs as Hook threw themselves about in the field and kept on top.
Pembroke struck back well as keeper Luke Butler took a blinding one-handed catch off Callum Davies to get rid of danger man Liam Miller (3) but hopes of a collapse quickly faded as Makepeace and George James built an excellent partnership where they ran well and punished anything loose.
Makepeace (21) was eventually adjudged lbw to Pembroke’s outstanding bowler Callum Davies, who finished with 2 for 7, but also caught the eye with the power of his throwing for attempted run outs, which kept the other fielders on their toes!
James retired on an excellent 26 and out was it left to brothers Aled and Owen Phelps to score the last few runs to take their team home to a comfortable win in only 9.3 overs.
Pembroke Dock (83 for 6) lost to Neyland A (84 for 2) by four wickets
Pembroke Dock’s hopes of setting Neyland A a challenging total received an early set-back when excellent run-maker Tom Grimwood (6) was run out in a mix-up and its took Adam Phillips and Rhys Daley some time to get into their stride, especially since Phillips was bowled by Jack John for 12 and top-scoring Scott Griffiths was bowled by Patrick Bellerby for a duck.
Nick Daley (7) also fell to a good one-handed return catch by Dai Davies but his son Rhys got into his stride with a series of threes from well-timed leg-side glances alongside George Smith, who looked back to good form until he was stumped by opposing skipper Sean Hannon off Dai Davies for 18.
This pair raised the run rate and Daley Jnr top scored with 26 before he was well caught by Lewis Page, who had thrown himself about in the field, to help Davies return fine figures of 3 for 17 alongside Jack John’s miserly 1 for 9 in 18 balls - and with 14 extras taking The Dock to 83 all out.
Patrick Bellerby (23) and Dai Davies (19) got Neyland off to a healthy start before Grimwood caught Bellerby off Nick Daley and them took the wicket of Davies with the aid of a Griffiths’ catch.
But Andrew Miller (16 not out) and the ubiquitous Page (14 not out) eased their team home alongside 13 extras in ten overs as they continued strongly in their quest for yet another league title.
