Depleted County Ladies battle in vain

The County team with Nick Evans

Ladies Premier League Cricket:

Pembrokeshire Ladies (171 for 7) lost to Briton Ferry Ladies (172 for 2) by 8 wickets

County top scorers Emilia Wilson and Sam RossiterPembrokeshire Ladies travelled to Briton Ferry for their penultimate game of the season and battled hard to overcome the fact that they travelled with only ten players, including Leanne Panton (Pembroke) who was making her debut - but in the final analysis the greater experience of the opposition was a telling factor, although Sam Rossiter’s team deserve credit for the way they competed it was always going to be an uphill task as Briton Ferry had current Welsh internationals like Niamh Mansell and Sara Phillips alongside others who have previously earned representative honours in a range of age groups.

Pembrokeshire batted first and lost a key run-maker in Rhiannon Morgan early on but Emilia Wilson and skipper Rossiter shared an excellent partnership of 87, with some excellent stroke play and good running between the wickets, before the former batter was adjudged lbw to Sara Phillips for a classy 42 – and Jemma Phillips departed cheaply as a real set-back for the county.

Even worse was to follow because after completing a deserved half century, including seven boundaries, Sam Rossiter sought a quick single and a direct hit on the stumps saw her run out for 52, which included seven boundaries.

As a result, the momentum inevitably slowed although Phoenix Phillips and Fflur Davies managed double figures, and Olivia James, helping out on the day but carrying an injury which later prevented her from bowling, finished not out with a creditable 19 as they had to settle on 171 for 7, a challenging total in the circumstances.

Ferry too strong in their batting line-up

But Briton Ferry set about reaching their target  through Anwen Howe and Niamh Marshall before the former batter was bowled by Emilia Wilson for 13 as reward for the Llechryd bowler’s pace and accuracy in another outstanding spell.

But Pembs hopes of making inroads into Briton Ferry’s lineup was rocked back by Mansell, whose undefeated 67 came from 93 deliveries and contained seven fours, with Sara Phillips reaching 50 (also seven fours but from 66 balls) in a partnership of 111. Phillips was caught by Bobby Neale to give Rhiannon Morgan a wicket but Mila Joseph joined the fray at No 4 for the home side and sped to 25 not out (three fours).

It left Briton Ferry on 172 for 2 with six overs still in hand but although they were disappointed by defeat county ladies’ president Nick Evans, who was there in support,  told PembrokeshireSport.co.uk
“Our team gave 100% in all aspects of the game and without so many regular players they did well – and now we look forward to our next challenge this Sunday coming as we travel to take on Radyr in our final game of the season.”
