Best Performances of the Weekend - 26th August 2024

Steve Mills

1. Steve Mills (Llangwm v Narberth)
Steve Mills rounded off a great season with Llangwm as he rapped a superb 169 not out against already-relegated Narberth that helped his team survive the ‘dreaded drop’ by a single point.’ Millsy’ belted 13 fours and 9 sixes as he was joined by skipper Noah davies (75) and Matthew Kiff (53 not out) in taking their side to a massive 334 for 1 at Pill Parks before taking the 18 points they needed by restricting Narberth to a strong reply of 218 for 7 as Messrs Davies and Kiff also bowled well.

 Loui Davies

 2. Loui Davies (Narberth v Llangwm)
Loui Davies also achieved three figures for Narberth in the same game as the talented young all-rounder showe3d the giant strides he has made during his stay in Australia where he played his cricket in Melbourne and since his return has really impressed with bat and ball. On this occasion he scored a cracking 105 not out, that included ten boundaries and three sixes - and also worthy of mention is the fact that the only wicket-taker for his team was 12 year old Ollie Johns, who is following his father Matthew, uncle Davy and granddad Mike in the family tradition!

Paul Murray 3. Paul Murray (Neyland v Saundersfoot)
Paul Murray has recently had a couple of ducks for Neyland, most unlikely for such a prolific run-getter, but he bounced back to form on a trip to the seaside as he struck 7 fours and 6 sixes in a typically aggressive knock 101 out of a total of 211 for 8 against Saundersfoot, who at one stage looked favourites as they reached 100 for 1 – and then Geraint Rees and Gary Lloyd did the damage with the ball so that they picked up a maximum haul of 20 points that saw them share the same number of points as Carew but won the silverware on a complicated (for us old-timers) count-back system.  What Neyland needed had already been worked out by canny skipper Sean Hannon so vice-captain Ross Hardy collected the trophy from league chairman Dave Brandon, with Mr hannon and his smashing wife Kirsty in Dublin, celebrating a special anniversary!

Lee Summons

4. Lee Summons (Johnston v Pembroke)
Lee Summons has really starred for Johnston this campaign, especially with the bat, and he was at it again against Pembroke with a high-quality 141 not out that saw the Glebelands Gang to victory in a high-scoring tussle where over 500 runs were scored. He shared a century partnership with Leigh Walters and another big stand with Gino Cleal, stroking 12 boundaries and seven effortless sixes – and also bowled well after Johnston’s usual excellent tea!

Jack Harries

5. Jack Harries (Pembroke v Johnston)
The other centurion at Glebelands was Pembroke skipper Jack Harries, who has certainly led by example in the batting stakes and although he didn’t enter the fray until the 12th over and was out in the 21st over he had reached 101 with only two fours but ELEVEN sixes! Jack’s pal and excellent vice-captain Luke Butler is a great man for statistics and he told PembrokeshireSport.co.uk that those runs take Jack’s league tally 857 at an average of over 61!

Simon Williams
6. Simon Williams (Haverfordwest 2nds v Stackpole)
Simon Williams does a fantastic job of being junior head coach at Haverfordwest and with the regional set-up but he still shows what a useful cricketer he is, like on Monday , when The Town seconds took on Stackpole, who just missed out on promotion from division three despite this being only their second defeat of the campaign. Haverfordwest could only muster 13 all out but then up stepped Mr Williams and bowled his off-cutters to such good effect that he ended up with a super figures of 7 for 9 as the village side were bowled out for 86.

Amanda John

7. Amanda John (Llanrhian 2nds v Llangwm)
Llanrhian 2nds lost to Llangwm but there was a star performance from Amanda John, who is s very talented all-round sports player and proved it on Monday as she led their bowling with an excellent 6 for 26 spell – and also scored 18 runs to show that it is possible for women to play in what used to be thought of as a men’s-only league. So well done Amanda – it was a fantastic feat that deserves every recognition!

Kial Keane8. Kial Keane (Fishguard v Narberth 2nds)
Kial Keane is best-known as a very good rugby player with Fishguard - but on Monday he showed he is no mean cricketer as he played for Fishguard in a big win over Narberth 2nds and scored 100 not out alongside skipper Nigel Delaney (83). The pair came together with Fishguard struggling on 24 for 4 and they put on a massive 183 runs before Nigel was out. Kial struck 9 fours and 4 sixes to take Fishguard to a match-winning total – and if he played every week he would be a massive boost for the club!

9 & 10. Jaap Harries and Josh Ward (Llechryd 2nds v Pembroke 2nds)
Congratulations to Jaap Harries and Josh Ward on their match-winning performances for Llechryd 2nds at Pembroke as they strolled home by 8 wickets.  Jaap made sure that Pembroke were restricted to a relatively low score with his excellent 7 for 25 haul before Josh led their reply with an equally important innings of 84 runs. Both are following in the family traditions at the club since teenager Jaap is the grandson of Laurence Harries and Josh, who is in his 20s and is the son of Mervyn Ward; two stalwarts if ever there were some at a club. *Sadly, we were unable to obtain pics of either player but say well done on two outstanding performances!
