Best Performances of the Weekend - 24th August 2024

1. Shaun shines for Carew in vital victory
Shaun Whitfield (Carew versus Neyland)

Shaun WhitfieldCarew produced the most amazing comeback to edge ahead of Neyland in the battle for the division one title and there is no doubt that man of the match was Rooks’ all-rounder Shaun Whitfield, who rescued them from the parlous state of 37 for 7 with the assistance of the experienced Gareth Lewis (32 not out)  as they added 102 runs together - and then combined with James Hinchliffe to shoot out the home side for a disappointing 106 to win by 34 runs.

Shaun showed the earlier Carew batsmen how to build an innings as he and Gareth waited for the bad balls to punish and gradually switched the momentum completely until he was run out in the final over having blitzed 8 fours and 3 sixes in his 78 runs.

Not content with his batting prowess, Shaun then sped in for his nine overs, and used his pace to good effect to claim 5 for 10, aided by James’ 4 for 26, so that The Rooks now stand four points ahead with a game to go. The performance was all the more remarkable because Shaun’s wife recently gave birth to their son Arlo and he was saying how tired he was before the game!

Tom Mansbridge
2. Tom Mansbridge (Saundersfoot versus Llangwm)

Tom Mansbridge showed that he is in good nick before playing in the Harrison-Allen Bowl Final for Saundersfoot in a week’s time, belting a blistering 159 runs to help The Seasiders to a huge win at Pill Parks. Tom is a huge accumulator of quick runs and this latest performance was no exception as he ended up with 12 fours and 10 big sixes in helping his team to 296 for 5, ably assisted by James Caine and skipper Yannic Parker, before Llangwm were shot out by Usman Ali and the rest of the Seasiders’ bowlers.

Aled Phelps

3. Aled Phelps (Hook versus Carew 2nds)

Aled Phelps is in a rich vein of form as skipper of Hook and in this match at Carew he struck his second century in three weeks as he scored 106 from 135 balls, including 8 fours and 2 sixes, and followed up with 4 for 41 as he helped his team to a comfortable win. 14 days earlier he had produced even more impressive figures of 134 runs and 6 for 8 when bowling – so Aled can certainly say he is leading his team by example!

4.  George James (Hook versus Carew 2nds)

George James Hook had a second centurion in this match because George James also weighed in with a cracking 103 not out as he joined Aled in a partnership of 212. George stroked  6 fours and 3 sixes in his 103 not out (from 113 balls) as Jacob Knox batted well for The Rooks Seconds as they went down by 71 runs. Both are great examples of Hook’s amazing platform via the junior coaches and are in third place and almost sure to go even better next campaign.

Joseph Kiff

5. Joseph Kiff (Burton against Johnston)

Joe Kiff has been in prolific form since his move this season from Llangwm to Burton and the end product was another century against Johnston at Glebelands, where his 101 off 75 balls (14 fours and 3 sixes) helped his side to a massive 270 for 4, with half centuries from Nick Jones and Luke Hayman gave them victory by 175 runs.

Jack Bevan

6. Jack Bevan (Burton versus Johnston)

After Joe Kiff and Co had amassed such a massive score before tea, their bowlers soon had Johnston in trouble as skipper Dan Llewellyn, Dan Ridge and Morgan Scale all took wickets – but the undoubted strike bowler was Jack Bevan, whose splendid 6 for 24 haul included vital run-makers in Lee Summons and Chris Fitzpatrick. It meant that the home side were shot out for 95 in 29.1 overs. Congratulations to Jack and Co on gaining promotion and it will be decided whether Burton or Herbrandston go up as champions.

Dean John

7. Dean John (Herbrandston versus Lamphey)

With Lamphey’s loss confirming their relegation another powerful performance from Dean John helped ensure that already-promoted Herbrandston stay in first place in the battle for the section silverware with Burton. Dean hit 91 from only 67 balls, including 13 fours and 2 sixes and then followed up with 2 for 22 alongside skipper Robbie Hood and Charlie Malloy – and now entertain Llanrhian tomorrow with a 3-point lead over Burton!

John Curran8. John Curran (Llechryd versus Pembroke)

John Curran’s batting and bowling figures have been a lot higher than this for Llechryd but his collective contributions with both bat and ball at Treleet meant that Llechryd were comfortable winners against Pembroke and now stand 14 points above the basement duo with just one game to go, when not so long ago they looked likely to make the ‘dreaded drop’ into Division Three.

John grabbed  4 for 24 as he bowled well alongside Joe Dow and Emilia Wilson in reducing Pembroke to 86 all out and then after Llechryd had lurched to 14 for 2 joined Tom Lewis (25 not out) in taking their side to victory in only 21 overs, with five fours and two sixes in his 45 not out to help them earn a maximum 20 points and a climb up the table.

Richard Reed

9. Richard Reed (Llanrhian versus Pembroke Dock)

Richard Reed’s classy innings of 86 against Pembroke Dock plunged the opposition into even deeper relegation mire with a game to go, leaving his side safe after their 51-run victory. Richard stroked 12 boundaries and a six in helping Llanrhian to 171 for 5 before The Dock were bowled out for 120 as Joe Crellin, Karl Davies and Chris Couzens all bowled well. Welcome back Richard!

Tom Colley10. Tom Colley (Lamphey Seconds versus Pembroke 3rds)

Lamphey Seconds celebrated their first win of the season, with maximum 20 points) against near-neighbours Pembroke Thirds and no-one would be more delighted than skipper Tom Colley, who has worked tirelessly to keep the team going after a long time where The Stags could only manage one team. And Tom must have celebrated in style because their huge total included a splendid innings of 144 from him, ably assisted by Sylas Ferran (55 not out) so well done Tom and Co. It is also nice to note that Tom’s son Zeb is also playing and daughter Edie is making great strides and is sure to feature in the future!

 Gavin Campbell

**Congratulations also to Gavin Campbell (Burton 2nds), who belted 86 for them against their counterparts from Narberth. This is the second time he has achieved such a big score in recent weeks and it is nice to see him doing so well!

**Congratulations also to the Laugharne duo of Joe Hodges and Callum Collins-Davies, who performed really well on Saturday. Jot struck 94 and Callum grabbed 6 for 11 alongside four wickets for old-timer Simon Davies. Keep it going lads!
