Burton - won won, lost one to start their new campaign off

Match One:

Experience pays off as Burton ease home

Whitland (48 for 5) lost to Burton (47 for 3) by 3 wickets

Whitland started their new campaign with a much-changed team and they found it hard-going against a very experienced Burton team whose members have been very good players for a number of years.

Jude Roberts made a great start for The Borderers as she opened the batting and showed an array of good strokes before she had to retire but no-one else mustered anywhere near double figures as they only managed one four and three fives before they were finally left with Jude not having the chance to score more runs from a second chance at the wicket.

There were four run outs as Burton fielded well and had wicket-takers in Finola and Bronwen Scale - and tight bowling in support from Becca Barton (0 for 5), Lucy Neale and Anna Ridge.

Finola Scale then led the Burton batting with 10 not out, whilst Bronwen Scale and Becca Barton reached nine apiece as openers - but extras was top scorer with 16 runs as Burton reached their target in only 4.5 overs.

However, there was some promising bowling from Ellie Fuller and Jude Roberts as Burton’s tally included one six, two fours and six threes as they showed their ability to run well between the wickets.

Whitland Innings:  Jude Roberts 27*. Finola Scale (1 for 10), Bronwen Scale (1 for 16).
Burton Innings: Finola Finlay 10*, Extras 16. Ellie Fuller (2 for 6), Jude Roberts (1 for 13).

Match Two:

Cresselly start with a bang

Whitland (41 for 3) lost to Cresselly (43 for 0) by six wickets

Whitland also batted first in their second game of the evening and could only muster 41 for 3 as Cresselly bowled and fielded as well as ever so that only 41 runs came whilst losing three wickets.

This time it was Louise Langley who led their batting as she remained unbeaten at the end but again a measure of their relative inexperience can be gauged from the fact they were unable to score of over half of their allotted balls, with only two fours and five three as Cresselly really applied pressure in the field. Caitlin Lewis and Sophia Cole were their wicket-takers and had good support from Eleri Williams and Phoenix Phillips.

Caitlin also featured with the bat as her undefeated innings included two sixes and a four, whilst co-opener Jess was almost as quick so that they reached their target in 2.3 overs as Bex Swainson and Jude Lewis tried hard in the Whitland bowling attack.

This was a second defeat for Whitland but they must focus on improving their basic batting and running between the wickets - and then they will soon be winning matches themselves!

Whitland Innings: Louise Langley 21*. Caitlin Lewis (1 for 13). Sophia Cole (1 for 8).
Cresselly Innings: Jess Lewis 19*, Caitlin Lewis 22*.

Whitland - lost both games but ready to gain experience new to some of them

Match Three:

Burton beat Cresselly in the night’s top match

Cresselly (82 for 4) lost to Burton (83 for 1) by 5 wickets

Cresselly and Burton have been two of the top three indoor teams for a number of years but on this occasion, it was the latter club who held sway after they restricted Cresselly to a still-decent score of 82 for 4 and then provided an impressive answer against a strong Burton bowling attack.

Caitlin Lewis led the Cresselly batting before retiring with a six, four and five threes to her name, with excellent support from Sophia Cole, who stayed not out, and Christine, who was run out in the inevitable late surge for runs.

Becca Barton was the pick of the Burton bowlers, assisted by Finola Scale (0 for 14), who then showed her batting prowess before she retired, leaving Bronwen Scale, until she was run out, and Becca Barton to take Burton to a comfortable win as they were strongly assisted by a surprising total of 25 extras, over half of them for byes to enjoy an excellent start to their new campaign.

Cresselly Innings: Caitlin Lewis 28*, Sophia Cole 21*, Christine Toy 18. Becca Barton (2 for 12).
Burton Innings: Finola Scale 27*, Bronwen Scale 15, Becca Barton 14*, Extras 25. Sophia Cole (0 for 10).
