Youth Rugby:
Seasiders too strong for battling Scarlets
Pembroke 7 - Tenby United 57
Pembroke only had 12 players for this home fixture but opponents Tenby United readily offered to loan them three players, which is great to see because this level should be about getting as many young players as possible immersed in as many games as can be organised for them – and one of those ‘on the day helpers’, Lewis Rossiter, actually scored The Young Scarlets only try converted by Theo Slaney!
Others who played for The Scarlets were Rhodri Osbourne and club captain Iwan Duffy, who was on the bench but enjoyed a run out against his own players!
For The Seasiders there were nine tries in total, with two apiece for Finn Brown, Jayden Allen and Iwan Duffy, plus other scores from Ethan Wright, Roco Hernandez and Owen Grieve, six of them converted by Alfie Pryor.
For Pembroke, their man of the match was Toby Hounsell, with scrum half Iolo Williams and centre Theo Slaney also catching the eye, whilst Jack Webb was the Young Seasiders’ man of the match.
This win leaves Tenby United in a creditable third place, having won half their six games, which is more in total than the clubs immediately below them – whilst Pembroke, last year’s undefeated champions, have just two bonus points from their five starts – but as new head coach Rob Hearne told PembrokeshireSport.co.uk
“I can see an improvement, week on week, and we now have some very good prospects for the club’s future.”
Young Blues breeze to victory
Haverfordwest 52 - Llangwm 0
Haverfordwest Youth continued their hugely successfully campaign in the 2024/25 youth division with this fifth win on the trot taking them well clear of the other clubs in the table as their counterparts from Llangwm battled hard, with some powerful tackling and no shortage of graft, but were unable to prevent the Young Blues running in eight tries whilst keeping a clean sheet.
The Young Wasps lost influential outside half Oscar Willington just after half time with a knee injury but had useful performances from ball-carrying prop Kieran Sinclair and Liam Miller, who was always looking for powerful runs through the middle but Haverfordwest ran in tries by Alfie Thomas, Rio Phillips, Max Fenn (2), Liam Hughes, Charlie Kelly, Logun Young and Isaac Mills, plus five conversions from Rio Phillips and one from Alfie Thomas
Rio Phillips also caught the eye with his kicking for position, with one 40/20 beauty covering almost 60 metres!
Other plus factors for Steve Parry’s squad was Charlie Kelly getting on the try sheet in his first game back at the club, with Isaac Jones playing well on debut and full back Thomas Davidson so keen to play that he travelled home by train from his studies at Hartpury College – and then making the long journey back to Gloucester afterwards!
Aber ease home in close-fought contest
Aberystwyth 28 - Crymych 24
Crymych made the long journey to Aberystwyth and in an absorbing clash matched their Mid Wales opponents with four tries but just missed out on the conversion count to lose their first match in four starts, whilst for Aber it was a first victory after three defeats.
Aber had strong performances by flanker Deri Gwynne, No 8 Keir Creasey, No 10 Steffan Jones and prop Gethin Davies, with their tries coming from prop Michael Whinstance, full back Steffan Gillies, flanker Deri Gwynne and No 8 Creasey, all four converted by Steffan Jones.
Tries for Crymych were scored by Delme Alley, Ashton Dearth, George Griffiths and Ifan James, with a conversion apiece by Owain Evans and Dafydd Bryan.
