Rugby reports in the lower divisions
Division Four (West):
Mariners mauled again
Milford Haven 14 - Gowerton 83
Milford Haven suffered their second heavy defeat at The Observatory in as many matches as they followed up their 78-7 mauling at the hands of a Gowerton side which is likely to challenge for the section honours.
To be fair to the mariners, they tried hard to play constructive rugby and managed good tries from front row men Craig Smith and James Passmore, both converted by Ian Rusinek – but the visitors ran in 13 tries as backs and forwards combined well.
Gareth King led the Gowerton try fest with five alongside a hat-trick for Bleddyn James, with others from Graham Lillycrap, Gareth John, Liam Hedges and Rhys Thomas, whilst Rob John also claimed a try and landed nine conversions to round off another big win for the visitors.

Division Five (West):
Blacks beaten by Ponty pack power
Pontyates 37 - Neyland 24
Neyland produced a solid improvement on their previous week’s performance and although Pontyates had a strong pack the All Blacks were left to reflect on chances missed during the game.
For example, when they trailed 32-17 they looked certain to score but home replacement centre Gareth Davies intercepted and raced 90 metres to score at the other end!
Pontyates No 8 Steve George gave his team an early lead with a try converted by No 10 Kieran Evans but the All Blacks were awarded a penalty try when Craig Grice was rugby tackled when about to score, Mark Riley adding the extra points.
George scored his second try, again converted by Evans before he added four penalties, and at 26-7 the visitors looked dead and buried – until Gregg Miller found space near the interval and the full back put centre Adam Collins through for a try.
Another Evans’ penalty for Pontyates was followed by a good Neyland try from powerful centre Dean Matthews before that unfortunate interception score again rocked the All Blacks back on their heels.
Neyland did have the final word when Grice’s efforts brought him a try which Riley converted, and he joined Matthews in going close again before the final whistle saw the All Blacks beaten – but certainly not overwhelmed on this occasion!
Adam Collins - another try for Neyland powerhouse
Wasps battle in vain
Llangwm 0 - Pantyffynon 18
Llangwm battled hard at Pill Parks against newcomers Pantyffynon and although they eventually went down to defeat by 18 clear points they could take some consolation from a second-half display where they didn’t concede any points.
Team manager Richard Scriven felt it had been a useful game in terms of young players gaining experience and singled out flanker Tom Leehan and replacement Matthew John as two who played well alongside Aled Morgan and Steve Rees in the front row.
But the Wasps were unable to rustle up any points and Pantyffynon scored tries by full back Emyr Davies, a cracking score from inside his own half, and No 8 Chris Davies from close range, whilst prop Nick Jones unusually took the kicks and slotted a conversion and two penalties.
Aled Morgan - battled hard for Llangwm
Two out of two for Scarlets
Pembroke 15 - Bynea 5
Pembroke made it two wins in as many matches under new coach Geraint Lewis as the Scarlets beat a strong Bynea side which had slammed Llangwm the previous Saturday.
The only down side for the Scarlets came when they lost outside half Simon Hooper, who had controlled play well until then, with a dislocated elbow.
Hooper had looked to bring his backs into action at every opportunity and they deservedly led by 10-0 at the interval as hooker Shamus Wiseman scored his first-ever try for the club after the ball had been spread wide and the home pack reacted quickly at the break-down to put Wiseman through for a try which Sean Dalling goaled to go with a well-struck penalty.
Dom Colman came into the back row during the second period and Bynea’s only score came after Hooper departed when Leigh Daly claimed an unconverted try.
That apart, there were few alarms in a good defensive performance by the Scarlets as Steve Dyde caught the eye up front alongside young second row Alex Wilks.
Shamus Wiseman - first try for Pembroke
Quins buried in first-half blitz
Cefneithin 50 - Pembroke Dock Harlequins 0
Pembroke Dock Harlequins disappointing start to the season continued at Cefneithin as they were already trailing by 32 points at the half way stage and although they looked a little sharper after the interval they were unable to score any points of their own and in the final analysis conceded eight tries.
Mark Davies played well in the linesout for the Quins and their pack grafted hard in the second half without any real reward, but the Quins were unable to quell the undoubted threat from Cefneithin’s outside half Owen Lewis, who scored three tries, landed two conversions and two penalties for a personal haul of 25 points.
Other tries for Cefneithin were claimed by centre Jonathan Morgan, winger Darren Williams, second row Owen Jones (2) and full back Matthew Green – and the Quins will be looking for a better all-round performance when they entertain New Dock Stars this Saturday.
Division Six (West):
Blaenau v St Davids
