Blues battle back for last-gasp victory

Haverfordwest 27 - Tumble 24

Crawford Hedmon - scores a try on his 21st birthday. Haverfordwest grabbed a superb length of the field try by centre Jack Evans to snatch victory when at one stage in the second half defeat seemed inevitable as their play was error-strewn as they trailed 3-24 – but their scrum superiority told and Tumble went into defence mode – and The Blues deserve every credit for gaining revenge after losing narrowly before in Tumble.

The visitors showed why they are second in the table as their game plan suited their strengths whilst things started badly for The Blues as excellent place-kicker Jack Codd missed an early ‘sitter’ before slotting a more difficult penalty – but other chances were missed as they played an attritional game – but would argue it paid off in the end.

For Tumble, there were tries by Alun Howells, Scott Jones and Iwan Morgan, with experienced No 10 Steve Hewitt not only directed operations but landed all three conversions and a penalty so that his team seemed good value for victory after 44 minutes.

But then Haverfordwest showed what a magnificent scrummaging unit they are as tries came as a result from their American winger Guy Barrons, their Fijian flanker Crawford Hedman (who celebrated his 21st birthday with a special post-match cake), Mo 10 Matty Phillips and finally Jack Evans’ special.

Codd landed the conversion from the final kick of the match and Tumble come under pressure for the second promotion spot behind Tycroes, by third-placed Aberaeron – with Haverfordwest in fifth place but with fourth spot in the section as their likely final finishing place!

Otters edged out – but take two welcome bonus points

Cardiff Met 39 - Narberth 33

Will Blackburn - man of the match for Narberth against Cardiff MetA last-gasp try from Cardiff Met flanker Tom Howlett robbed Narberth of what have been a terrific win over a team four places above them in the table but it was almost to be expected in a topsy-turvy tussle where the lead often changed hands, leaving The Otters having to settle for two bonus points as they had scored four tries and come within seven points of the winners.

But they are still in the relegation zone and need more wins to take them away from the threat of going down so if they can improve their defence whilst maintaining their undoubted attacking capability they could still stay up.

Cardiff Met had won 38-20 at Narberth and they soon opened up a 15-3 lead in this return fixture with tries from Joshua Carrington and Ioan Evans, after Ross Mackay had landed an early penalty and slotted a conversion.

Jon Rogers had kicked an early penalty and converted a try by Hedd Nicholas – and then Llew Jones added a second so that the teams were locked on 15-all.

Carrington sped through for his second score and Mackay converted before Rogers kicked another penalty so the students went in with a 22-18 interval lead.

The Otters took the lead as Lewys Gibby sliced through and half back partner Rogers added the extras – and both kickers slotted three points before Toby Clinch put Cardiff Met back in front and Mackay again converted.

But in a frenetic finish Narberth man of the match Will Blackburn ploughed over the line to give his side the lead by a point – only for Howlett and Mackay to spoil the Narberth party!

Narberth: Ashley Sutton: Matthew John; Hedd Nicholas; Harrison Griffiths; Llew Jones: Jonathan Rogers; Lewys Gibby: George Rossiter; Tom Clark; Tom Kaijaks: Will Blackburn; Sam Martin: Jac Bennett; Tom Powell (Capt); Roy Osborn. Replacements:  Kyle Hamer; Bradley Davies; Ryan Rees; Rhys Williams: Josh Hamer; Alex Williams; Osian Evans; Dean James.

Preseli Men pummelled in second half

Crymych 7 - Kenfig Hill 55

Lee Griffiths - scored the only try for CrymychKenfig Hill belied their eighth place in the championship with this barnstorming win over a struggling Crymych side playing on their own patch at Parc Lloyd Thomas, in front of a decent crowd in ideal conditions.

The writing was already on the wall for The Preseli Men as they were already 7-17 adrift at the interval and things went from bad to worse in a one-sided second period where they failed to score but also conceded a massive 38 points.

Yet Crymych started well enough as hooker Lee Griffiths rounded off a concerted close-range attack to score a try converted by outside half Adam Phillips.

But with Jamie Knight and Lloyd Allen as big ball winners for Kenfig Hill, and with skipper Lee Tom Briggs directing operations from scrum half alongside No 10 Jonny Clatworthy, they managed nine tries by Aaron Grabham (3), centre Gareth Rees (2), full back Connor Tantum (2) and livewire flanker Jake Dixon (2), five converted by Clatworthy, it was a rugby day to forget in Crymych, but with the consolation they drop to 11th place but are still nine points away from the relegation places.

Crymych: Tomos Davies: Hedd George; Sion Rowlands; Jon Hill; Ianto Davies: Adam Phillips; Dafydd Phillips: Morgan James; Lee Griffiths; Ben Cox: Matthew Freebury; Rhys Davies: Tom Taylor; Llyr Davies; Osian Davies. Replacements: Osian Charles;  Cai Ifans; Steff Morris;  Dan Morgans.

Treble figures as Seasiders run riot against ‘The Cocklemen’

Penclawdd 28 - Tenby United 103

Lloyd Thomas - landed fourteen conversions for Tenby United at PenclawddTenby United had beaten  Penclawdd  by 57-12 at Heywood Lane and showed their attacking capabilities in this return mismatch as they ran in 15 tries – and with 14 of them converted by Lloyd Thomas scored over a century of points!

‘The Cocklemen’ are still struggling to grab a win after 13 defeats but at least deserve every credit because they battled until the final whistle and at least had the very small consolation of a bonus point for scoring four tries by Iwan Jones, Liam Davey, Harry Brown and Will Snell, three converted by Tom Davies and the other by Alex Hughes.

The Seasiders were out of sight by half time and in the final analysis there was a brace of tries each from Hywel Baker, Geraint Jones, Gwion Jones, Jake Roberts, Jordan Asparassa and Dom Colman, with others by Rob Luly (the biggest cheer of the afternoon for the popular prop!), Matthew Lewis and Liam Price.

Thomas showed his kicking boots were on and old fogey supporter Keith Walker, the former club secretary and now historian, confirmed that it was almost certainly the first time The Seasiders had ever scored 100 points in a match!

Tenby United: Geraint Jones: Gwion Jones; Liam Price; Tom Edmonds; Matthew Lewis: Lloyd Thomas; Fletcher Broadhurst: Hywel Baker; Kyle Rossiter; Rob Luly: Alex Jenkins; Max Boswell: Jake Roberts; Jack Brown; Dom Colman. Replacements: Joe Poole; Luke Dedman; Jordan Asparassa; Gethin Bradney; Rhys Grigg.

Mariners miss out despite Ieuan’s hat-trick

Milford Haven 24 – Nantgaredig 46

Ieuan Davies - excellent hat-trick of tries for Milford Haven flankerAn excellent hat-trick of tries by flanker Ieuan Davies helped earn a bonus point against visiting Nantgaredig but Milford Haven are still locked in bottom place, some 14 points adrift of the other struggling clubs, with only one win from 12 starts.

It says much for Steve Martin’s beleaguered squad, which has so many players out from injury or work commitments, that they keep battling on and Ieuan Davies sums up that spirit as one of the smallest in the squad who started  out as a winger but now has made the successful transition to the back row and claimed a try before the interval, as did centre Andrew Sinton, and added two more in the second period as reward for his terrific support play.

James Trueman converted two of them and full back Robbie Jones also caught the eye with his defensive grit.

But Nant grabbed 32 points before the break thanks to tries by pacy winger Ollie Hawke (3), centre Matthew Williams, Joe Thomas and Logan Davies, plus a solitary conversion by outside half Lloyd Williams.

Matthew Williams added his second try after the interval alongside his namesake Lloyd, who notched another two conversions to round off their scoring and give them the double, since they had beaten The Mariners by 33-23 at home.

Milford Haven:  Robbie Jones: Aaron Davies; Andrew Sinton; Dan Jenkins; James Trueman: Aaron Cookson; Dan McClelland: Jamie Parr; Ryan Williams; Jordan Davies: Ethan Aldred; Chris Hall: Ben Groves; Ieuan Davies; Dewi Williams. Replacements: Morgan John; Chris Treiber-Jenkins; James Williams; Lee Riley, Owen Evans.

Borderers beaten by visitors Loughor

Whitland 14 - Loughor 20

Trystan Bowen - claimed two tries for Whitland Hard-working second row Trystan Bowen claimed two tries for Whitland against Loughor at Parc Llwyn Ty Gwyn but the visitors completed the double as they just about held the edge and added this victory  to their 30-8 home success.

Full back Johnny Thomas landed both conversions but Loughor responded with tries by Joe Burden and Iestyn Budge as Tom Davies landed both two-pointers alongside two vital penalties as two penalties – to allow them to leap frog over their opponents despite some yeoman work by skipper Dan Bennett, and Oli Bujega, plus Wyndham Williams and points scorers Bowen and Thomas, and especially Rhys Nicholas.

So, Nant move into fifth spot whilst Whitland drop to seventh, but in no danger of making the ‘dreaded drop’ because of Milford Haven’s struggles.

Whitland: Johnny Thomas: Oli Bujega; Olly Hughes; Dom Davies; Deian Davies: Will Hughes; Morgan Edwards: Jonny Phillips;  Matt Driver; Ceiron Evans: Trystan Bowen; Alan Proctor: Rhys Nicholas; Gavin Smith; Dan Bennett (Capt). Replacements: Jack Evans; Wyndham Williams; Shane Webster; Ben Evans; Owyn Griffiths.

Steff’s late drop goal gives Aber the double the double over the Teifisiders

Aberaeron 17 - Cardigan 16

Morgan Llewelyn - Vital try for Aberaeron skipperSteff Rees was the hero of the moment for Aberaeron as they edged home in a typical Ceredigion clash with Cardigan, who might look back on this tight tussle as a game they should have won.

With just three minutes left, Rees completely fluffed a drop -goal attempt that had home supporters wishing he had spread play wide but the talented outside half had a second chance a minute later and found the target from 30 metres to keep his team in contention for promotion.

The Teifisiders had held a deserved 11-7 interval lead thanks to two penalties from Shaun Leonard alongside a try by winger Alun Jenkins, with Aber responding from a cracking move which was rounded off by half back  Dafydd Llewelyn, converted by centre Rhodri Jenkins.

They increased that led when classy winger John Lumb scored an unconverted try but then Aber skipper Morgan Llewelyn raced over for a try converted by Jenkins, to set up that tense finale.

It was Rees who had the last word to give his side the double, having won in Cardigan by 23-7 – but it was mighty close in the final analysis!

Aberaeron: Jac Crompton: Morgan Llewelyn (Capt); Rhys Jones; Rhodri Jenkins; Steffan DJ Thomas: Steff Rees; Daf Llewelyn: Ceri Davies; Owain Bonsall; Fin Webb: Bleddyn Thomas; Richard Francis: Tudur Jenkins; Osian Davies; Will James. All blacks keep up winning running against committed Dragons

Dreigiau Emlyn 19 - Neyland 26

Oli Rothero and Josh Watts - scored late points for NeylandNeyland were pushed all the way by a strong and committed Dreigiau Emlyn before The All Blacks eased home, despite not being at their best, to virtually make sure of the section title since they are now 12 points ahead of the chasing pack after completing the double, having already won at home by 29-8

The teams were locked at 12-apiece at half time after The Dragons had tries by Edryd James and Taran Butler, one converted by Deiniol Rees, with The All Blacks’ response coming from tries by winger Josh Watts and fly half George Evans, one converted by Oli Rothero.

It was equally tight after the oranges before winger Matthew Coles rounded off a cracking Neyland move; Rothero adding the extras, before The Dragons grabbed their third try as Llew Morgan crossed the whitewash, Rees again converting.

But Neyland claimed the final vital score, plus a bonus point for scoring four tries, as Watts grabbed his second try and Rothero added the extras from a superb touchline kick to earn

Wasps wilt against powerful Athletic

Llangwm 6 - Narberth Athletic 55

Brad Cramb - try hat-trick for Athletic centreNarberth Athletic kept alive their hopes of promotion with a convincing win at Pill Parks as Llangwm took an early lead from a  penalty by full back Breig Matthews, who also added a second three-points in the second period – but The Athletic managed to score nine tries as centre Brad Cramb led the way with a hat-trick, with others from Will Davies (2), Andrew Williams, Steve Pilot, Harry Williams and Corey Neilson, who marked his debut when he came on, having moved to work in the area from New Zealand.

He came over with Rhodri Gerrard, the son of former Otter legend, Steve Gerrard.

There were also conversions from Shane Rossiter (3) and Shay Norcross (2), with second row Dan Owens chosen as man of the match – and for The Wasps there were excellent efforts from prop Keiran Sinclair, the youth team skipper making his debut at prop, winger Jack Roberts and skipper Ashley James.

Llangwm: Breig Matthews: Ollie Gerson; Steffan Williams; Ieuan Grey; Jack Roberts: George James; Steffan Thomas: Ieuan Power; Ben Llewellyn; Callum Jenkins: Jake Thomas: Jason Mock: Morgan Scott-Walker;  Ashley James (Capt); Morgan Rees. Miller’s magic seals Quins success

Pembroke Dock Harlequins 29 - St Davids 20

Damien Miller - the powerful full back scored a hat-trick of tries for The QuinsDamien Miller again showed what an asset he is to Pembroke Dock Harlequins as the powerful full back showed his pace and power with ball in hand as he scored three of the four tries for his team as they completed the double over St Davids, whom they had beaten 21-17 earlier in the campaign.

The Quins led 21-13 at the break and the game continued at pace as The Saints played their part in an entertaining contest in front of a big Bierspool crowd – but although they clawed their way back with five minutes to go as player/coach Morgan Richards sped through for his second score that had no points to show for their performance, what was something of a pity.

It was the mercurial Miller who claimed The Quins first two tries, both converted by skipper Ben Hathaway whilst scrum half Mike Gurney slotted two penalties before The Quins other ace attacker in centre Craig Barnett crossed for their third score and Hathaway again converted – only for St Davids to respond with Morgan’s opener and a Gurney conversion.

Hathaway notched a penalty and Miller pounced for his third try, this time unconverted, before Griffiths crossed in the corner and Gurney’s excellent kick found the mark – but The Quins kept matters tight until the final whistle to record their sixth win of the season and leapfrog into sixth place ahead of their opponents.

Pembroke Dock Harlequins: Damien Miller: Owain Turner; Craig Barnett; Ben Hathaway (Capt); Tom Donovan: Euan McDonald; Morgan Rogers: Ryan Neilson; Dan McLeod; Jack Davies: Rhys Doyle; Mark van Rhyn: Jordan Palmer; Danny Wilkes; Harry Owen. Wilkes’ hat-trick makes him a welcome Bulls’ guest

Teirw Crymych 35 - Pembroke 14

Pembroke’s hopes of a promotion place received something of a jolt as they went down to defeat at Parc Lloyd Thomas against a Teirw Crymych side they had beaten 38-24 in their match at Crickmarren, with The Bulls starting really well and taking a 21-0 lead in the first quarter before The Scarlets settled in and there was no scoring before half time, although Pembroke had their chances and felt that outstanding centre James Jones had scored but the referee was unsighted.

The second half was more level as the teams shared four converted tries and Pembroke had tries from No 8 Robin Badham and young scrum half Josh Greenwood, both converted by Jared Sherratt, with other plusses for them in defeat being the play off the bench of Liam Topp and Deryn Williams, as well as youth team player Ethan John, who played for the last 25 minutes and caught the eye, whilst centres Jones and Fraser James also defended well.

The Bulls had the influence of four Fishguard players on permit and Liam Wilkes, who normally plays hooker for The Seagulls, switched to flanker and scored a try hat-trick, with team mate Mark Jones landing all five conversions as centre Sion Evans and loose-head prop Tomos Davies also getting on the scoresheet as hooker Sion Wilson, centre Declan harries and winger Steffan Rees also played well.

Sadly, Pembroke’s popular  veteran second rower ormer long-term captain, Scott Powell, sustained a nasty head injury and had to go to hospital – and we join all rugby people across the county in wishing him a speedy recovery and return to action.

Teirw Crymych:  Iori Lewis: Declan Harries; Mark Jones; Sion Evans; Hedd James: Nick Bevan; Owain Rees: Tomos Davies; Sion Wilson; Will Delaney: Luke Freebury (Capt); Bryn Thomas: Liam Wilkes; Griff Lloyd; Harri Vaughan. Replacements:  Richard Phillips; Rhys Richards; Aled Harries; Steffan Rees, Carwyn Lawrence.

Replacements: Jamie Brayford; Deryn Williams; Liam Topp;  Ethan John.
