Fishguard in Possession

Division Two (West):

Five-try Seagulls too strong for depleted Mariners

Fishguard & Goodwick 29 - Milford Haven 13

Fishguard & Goodwick completed the double over old rivals Milford Haven as they scored five tries to The Mariners one – and that just about reflected the balance of play.

The Seagulls had the lion’s share of possession but were always kept on their toes by the commitment of Steve Martin’s team in a game there was plenty of action alongside unforced errors as both teams have played little rugby of late.

It was The Seagulls who made the better start and their efforts were rewarded when their pack won quality ball and No 9 Max Jones spread play wide for his half back partner Kial Keane to score on the left with men still outside him.

But with Dai Sweeney, Ieuan Davies, Ryan Williams and Ethan Aldred to the fore Milford fought back and scrum half James Trueman slotted two penalties to deservedly nudge them in front.

They had other half chances as Steve Martin put Dean McSparron away, but he was closed down by the Fishguard cover – and they went back up field to retake the lead when they kicked a penalty into the corner and the carefully controlled lineout drive saw Cai Llewellyn emerge with the touchdown, again unconverted.

Then Fishguard added a third try as Gavin Walsh, Will Delaney and Will Lewis took play into the corner and hooker Liam Wilkes ploughed over and centre Mark Jones converted from the touchline to give his side a 17-6 interval lead.

And The Seagulls increased their advantage soon after the restart as they established a solid platform and play was spread wide for winger Rhys Evans to score a bonus-point corner try.

The result was already assured but they made doubly sure when bustling back rower Rhys Lewis crossed the whitewash as reward for his support play, with Mark Jones adding the extras.

But The Mariners battled on regardless and one cracking drive down the middle by prop Dao Sweeny raised their spirits and when they finally claimed the try their efforts deserved it was Sweeny who got the touchdown before Trueman converted.

So, it was a five-point victory for The Seagulls that will have pleased coaches Nathan Jenkins and Huw Evans but sadly Milford Haven had nothing to show in terms of bonus points but opposing coaches Steve Martin and Mark Wonnacott can take satisfaction from the fact that those who turned out in the club’s colours gave everything in their cause!

Division Four (West) A:

Scarlets snatch epic derby win with a late penalty

Pembroke 29 - Pembroke Dock Harlequins 28

Dai Rogers - outstanding for Pembroke with two triesIf ever there was a need to verify the importance of local derbies in our game, then this battle royal at Crickmarren certainly provided it because a large crowd really enjoyed a tussle where the contrast in playing styles was evident and fortunes ebbed and flowed before The Scarlets won by a single point!

The Quins have a potent back division as centres Jack Price and Craig Barnett posed a constant threat whenever they were released by Sam James and impressive No 10 Morgan Rogers, plus pacy wingers in Tom Donovan and Damien Miller, plus skipper Ben Hathaway in good kicking form behind them.

But it was The Scarlets’ pack that were on top, with Dai Rogers putting in another powerful shift at No 8, ably assisted by Leon Stwart and Rhydian Eynon, plus ‘old hands’ up front in Seamus Wisemen, Jamie Brayford and skipper Lloyd Davies.

Even so, the Quins were good value for a 28-21 lead going into the closing stages but then The Scarlets were able to introduce their formidable replacements and they somehow managed to claw their way back after the influential Jack Price went off with an injured shoulder and the Quins had thrown away two clear overlaps.

The Quins opened with an unconverted try by winger Donovan who sped up the touchline but back came Pembroke with a cracking try by flanker Leon Stewart which No 10 Jared Sherratt converted.

The Quins added two further tries in quick success as Hathaway converted top-notch scores by ‘Danger Men’ Barnett and Price to lead 19-7 before the home side responded with a close-range try from No 8, their best player, before Hathaway landed a penalty, only for Rogers to grab his second score, following some yeoman work by William Edwards, Robin Badham and Davies which Sharratt converted to cut The Quins’ lead to 22-21 at the interval.

The second half was equally frenetic as Hathaway added a penalty and then snapped a dupped goal to give The Quins a seven-point lead going into the closing stages, where the Scarlets replacement hooker, ex-youth player Danny Davies, ploughed over for a try as reward for good work off the bench along with Johnny Palmer, Ethan Brown and Jack Nicholas.

But Sharratt missed the conversion chance to tie things up but in the last moments Pembroke were awarded a penalty which he calmly placed between the uprights to give his team revenge for a 38-17 defeat they had endured at Bierspool on the opening day of the season.

Tom Powell - man of the match for The OttersCross Keys 30 - Narberth 24

Narberth almost claimed the comeback of the season as they fought back from a possible hammering after trailing 7-30 at the interval and scoring 17 unanswered points afterwards before they ran out of time.

But they were rewarded with two bonus points for scoring four tries and coming within seven points of their opponents as No 8 Roy Osborne (2), centre Harrison Griffiths and No 10 Jonathan Rogers grabbed their tries alongside conversions by Rogers and replacement kicker Osian Evans.

Skipper Tom Powell was voted the Otters’ ‘Player of the Match’ and this weekend sees old rivalries renewed at The Lewis Lloyd Ground as bottom club Newcastle are the visitors in a real relegation battle.

Laugharne complete local-derby double

Oli Bujega -scored a try for WhitlandLaugharne 41 - Whitland 12

Laugharne completed the double over neighbours Whitland as they followed up a narrow win in Whitland on the first day of the season with this more comprehensive home victory.

The home side were already 22-0 ahead at half time and although The Borderers did manage some second-half points there was little prospect of a momentous comeback against this Laugharne points machine.

Tom Hughes and Oli Bujega scored Whitland’s second half tries, one converted by Jonathan Thomas – but victory keeps the home team firmly in second spot, behind Lampeter Town, in the section table.

WRU Division One Cup - Last 16:

Seasiders lose their way in the second half

Bridgend Athletic 24 - Tenby United 19

Tom Barrass - Tenby skipper grabbed their only tryTenby United’s hardy band of supporters must have had high hopes of a quarter-final place as they led Bridgend Athletic by 16-5 at the half-way stage but then The Seasiders lost their way and the home side benefitted to remain in the competition – leaving The Seasiders to focus on maintaining their unbeaten league record.

Bridgend Athletic currently lie fourth in Division One West Central, having won five out of seven league matches but Tenby exposed them in that first half as skipper Tom Barras score a try, converted by Lloyd Thomas, who also added three penalties on the back of some good work up front by his pack.

But The Athletic bounced back and all The Seasiders could muster in a disappointing second period was a neat Thomas drop goal as The Athletic ended up with four tries claimed by Ben Owen, Mike Powell, Tom Jenkins and Geraint Richards, two of them converted by Rhys Williams.

Tenby United: Gwion Jones: Matthew Lewis; Jack Golding; Tom Edmonds; Jordan Asparassa: Lloyd Thomas; Dai Jones: Hywel Baker; Kyle Rossiter; Ethan Morgan: Tom Barrass (Capt); Alex Jenkins: Jake Roberts; Jack Brown; Dom Colman. WRU Division Four Cup - Last 16:

Dreigiau Emlyn 15 - Neyland 26

Henry Macbeth - scored an excellent first try for NeylandNeyland followed up their recent home league win over Dreigiau Emlyn with this equally hard-fought success at Ddol Wiber where they led 13-7 at the interval and were never headed as they played consistently well in attack, and especially in defence; after half time.

The All Backs took the early led when a clever cross kick by Oli Rothero was gathered by Henry Macbeth, who was starting the game because Patrick Bellerby was late arriving, and benefitted from good work by Josh Watts in the build-up.

This early reverse stung the Dragons into raising their tempo and they opened their account with a try by Sam Forrester-Evans, converted by Deiniol Rees.

Rothero punched home a penalty from 45 metres to push his team ahead and then Neyland’s forward momentum saw nippy scrum half Owen Hamer pick up and dash down the blind side for an unconverted try.

Neyland had half chances to added to their advantage before a penalty by Deiniol Rees cut the All Blacks’ lead to 13-10, only for Rother added a second penalty and Patrick Bellerby announced his arrival on the pitch with a quality try which Rothero converted.

At 23-10 an All-Black win seemed assured but a Rees penalty and a try from Gethin Dale rang a few small alarm bells until Rothero ensured Neyland’s entry into the last eight – and they await with interest as the only Pembrokeshire club left in the draw!

Neyland: Liam Rees: Henry Macbeth; Josh Watts; George Williams (Capt); Matthew Coles: Oli Rothero; Owen Hamer: Luke Griffiths-Dawes; Alex Swales; Seb Mackintosh: George Evans; Andrew Slark: Tal Tamilia; Owain Evans; Iestyn Evans. Replacements: Jack Harries; Lewis Halley; Mark James; Craig Grice; Patrick Bellerby.

Athletic battle hard against league leaders

Pontyclun 26 - Narberth Athletic 19

Narberth Athletic travelled to Pontyclun (Rhondda Cynon Taff) knowing they faced a team that is in a rich vein of form as they sit proudly on top of Division 4 East Central with a playing record of eight wins and a draw from their nine matches.

The Otters’ second string did well to fight their way back after conceding early points and they managed scores from Llew Jones and Shane Rossiter, who also landed two conversions.

But Pontyclun scored tries by Ewan Jones and Joe Williams, plus both conversions and four penalties from the accurate boot of Nicky Theaker so that although the Athletic outscored their high-flying opponents by three tries to two they conceded those three-pointers at key times and so bow out of the competition after a very brave battle.

Narberth Athletic: Shane Rossiter: Harri Harries; Brad Cramb; Stephen J Brown; Iestyn Doble: Shay Norcross; Jordan James: Declan Cole; Rhys Jenkins; Jac Norcross: Dan Owen; Henry Foster: Harry Phillips; Jack Tucker; Stephen Pilot Capt). Replacements (from): Gareth Clifford; Stephen Thomas; Tom Parcells; Yori Morgan; Richard Watkins; Wil Nicholas; Llew Jones; Will Davies; Archie Vallance.

Tylorstown 32 - Teirw Crymych 17

Teirw Crymych journeyed into the Rhondda Valley to take on a strong Tylorstown team that currently sits third in Division 4 East Central and looked slight favourites to win as they led 17-15 at the interval.

But the home side raised the tempo after the break as they claimed 17 unanswered points to move into the last eight of the competition.
