Rugby referees enjoy their annual dinner
The Pembrokeshire Society of Rugby Union Referees marked the end of a long season with their annual dinner at The Mariners’ Hotel in Haverfordwest.
Greeting the referees, their partners and guests Bill Carne, sport writer, and Arthur Day, who looks after them at their meetings in Haverfordwest Rugby Club, was Andrew Thomas (Crymych), who marked his first duty as incoming chairman by welcoming everyone.
He thanked Tony Pratt for the way he had conducted himself in his three-year stint as chairman, Chris Oliver as Hon Secretary and Andrew Miles for his hard work as Hon Treasurer of the society.
There were also congratulations for John Griffiths, who not only became president but was honoured with the same office in the Welsh Society of Rugby Union Referees as reward for his long service on and off the field.
Also congratulated was Jason Summers on his elevation to Grade Three after a good season in which he had officiated at the Principality Stadium, the dream of every referee, and in several local finals at youth and junior levels.
Andrew Thomas also said well done to all the other officials for their contribution to rugby in Wales and amusingly recalled a number of little things that had happened in the season – as well as highlighting the fact that former Narberth top try-scorer Colin Phillips, now a respected referee, had shown he had lost little of his self-preservation on the field as he managed to eat Tony Pratt’s steak after ordering something totally different!
