Blues Ladies pay for their slow start

Emily Carrington - outstanding up front for The Blues Ladies

Ladies’ Rugby:

Haverfordwest 12 - Ynysddu 25

Haverfordwest Ladies’ hopes of halting Ynysddu’s three-match run of victories was almost over after 25 minutes of this Welsh Championship match as they conceded four tries through the taking of wrong options and some badly-timed tackles.

As a result, Lowry Young, Paige Randall, Kelsey Williams and Lucy Phillips all scored tries as The Blues were clearly suffering from late changes but were lucky to have quality players like Awen Prysor, Holly Couzens and Carys Phillips willing to help out at short notice.

Its a try - and Haverfordwest Ladies celebrate

Blues regroup to claw their way back

After such early shocks the home team regrouped and there was some good ball-winning by the likes of Emily Carrington, Menna Pugh-Hughes and Alex Hopson-Griffiths, plus some solid work in the tight from the front row of Fleur Mandy, Aimee Radley and vice-captain Sarah Lawrence alongside Emily Ann Carrington and Elise Christopher in the second row.

As a result, half backs Elin Williams and skipper Emma Summons had more quality ball to utilise and as they pushed Ynysddu, who are in their first campaign at this level, and as a result former Welsh international prop Sarah Larsen ploughed over twice from close range, one of her tries converted by Holly Couzens.

Ynysddu, who are from near Caerphilly in the Sirhowy Valley of Gwent, did manage to add a fifth unconverted try through Jess New and now have 19 points from their 14 matches to perch at the top of the table, whilst Haverfordwest, who lost they last game to Gwernyfed by just two points, will have to raise their tempo and hopefully be able to have some experienced players like Jana Neumann back in action.

Best performers chosen by the opposition

In the ladies’ matches the best forward and back from each team is chosen by the opposition and on this occasion it was Haverfordwest’s Emily Carrington (No 8) and Awen Prysor (Wing) who were chosen by the away players, with their best players voted by the Haverfordwest squad being flanker Kelly Weeks and outside half Lowry Young.

Blues’ head coach Archie Thomas is leaving the area to work in Ireland but the good news that assistant Morgan Ridley has taken over the role and will be eager to push The Blues up the table in the very near future!
