2023 Pembrokeshire Youth Finals Day

Pembrokeshire Youth Cup Final:

Cup winners - Aberystwyth Youth

Harri’s four-timer helps Aber Youth win well

Aberystwyth Youth 52 - Tenby United Youth 10

Referee: Ceri Harries.
Assistants: Leighton Bambry & Edward Howells.
Venue: Crickmarren, Pembroke.

Aberystwyth showed they had shrugged off their disappointment at being beaten to the youth league title by winning the Youth Cup as they proved too strong and streetwise for a Tenby United team which battled hard until the final whistle and could look back on their gritty performance with pride.

Leading the way for Aber, and inevitably winning the man of the match award, was pacy winger Harri Gwynn  Jones as excellent ball-winning by his forwards alongside deft handling by his inside backs allowed him to  claim four tries.

Joining him on the try sheet were centre Rhys Willets-Jones, flanker Elis Nicholas, centre Leo Davies and excellent outside half Euros Lloyd, who also landed six conversions for a personal haul of 17 points as he combined well with No 9 Will Hockenhull throughout the match.

Also catching the eye for Aber was skipper Osian James, outstanding all season, hooker Mason Lees and No 8 Dafydd Hywel as they had the game won by half time and never relented thereafter, despite the yeoman efforts of The Young Seasiders to keep plugging away.

And Tenby were rewarded with good tries of their own by flanker Jake Henson and centre Max James, who worked tirelessly in his midfield role with Dylan Duffy, Archie Treadaway-Williams and Fletcher Broadhurst.

Henson led the team by example in his back row role alongside Cain Llewellyn and Cameron Brown, plus hooker Kyle Rossiter and second rows Jake Gooding and Hudson Diment – but in the final analysis Aberystwyth Youth were worthy winners and took the silverware on its long journey back to Mid Wales.

Pembrokeshire Youth Plate Final:

Plate winners - Crymych Youth

Crymych Youth too strong for gritty Young Blues

Crymych Youth 50 - Haverfordwest Youth 0

Referee: Geraint Morgan.
Assistants: Paul Tedaldi & Gruff M Jones.
Venue: Crickmarren, Pembroke.

Crymych Youth completed the double of youth league champions and Youth Plate winners as they ran in eight unanswered tries against a battling Haverfordwest team which fought hard but found it hard going against the pace, power and organisation of their opponents.

The victors were already 36-0 ahead at the interval and referee Geraint Morgan correctly called a halt under the youth rules that once a team is 50 points to the good then that is the end of the game, in this case about 20 minutes before the scheduled time.

Leading by example for The Young Blues was skipper Iestyn Arnold, who will now be leaving his youth status behind and looking to play at senior level, as will some of the other senior members of the squad. He and half back partner Isaac Kelso-jones had to exist on limited possession but the whole team deserves credit for reaching the final.

Crymych second rower Bryn Thomas also caught the eye because as well as putting in his usual shift in the ball-winning stakes alongside Steffan Morris, Aneirin Vaughan, Jac Delaney, Iestyn Wood and the tearaway front row of Ptolemy Alleyne, Dan Page and Kyle Kempson he not only opened the scoring but completed a rare second-row hat-trick with tries number five and eight.

Skipper Iestyn Wood also ploughed over for a try and others came from Alleyne and Gruff Edwards, who controlled play with scrum half Iori Lewis, Delaney and Owain Davies, who looked sharp in midfield as centre partner to Deian Davies, whilst the back three of Elis James and wingers Charlie Fenn and Dyfrig Dellar, with Owain Davies also landing five conversions.

Blues’ co-coach Steve Parry felt that his team had given their best but praised Crymych as the worthy winners of the competition alongside their deserved league title – whilst opposite number Barry Davies was obviously pleased with his team’s performance but returned the compliment about the opposition, whom he said had tackled hard and never gave up trying.

Crymych Youth: Ellis James: Charlie Fenn; Deian Davies; Owain Davies; Dyfrig Dellar: Gruff Edwards; Iori Lewis: Ptolemy Alleyne; Dan Page; Kyle Kempson: Steffan Morris; Bryn Thomas: Aneirin Vaughan; Jac Delaney; Iestyn Wood (Capt).
