Tenby United were good value for victory in this first-ever plate competition, organised for teams knocked out in the first round of the Knockout Cup, as they beat Pembroke in an entertaining clash at Pembroke Dock Harlequins ground.

The Seasiders were already 22-0 ahead at the break against a Pembroke side that never gave up trying but were up against it from the outset as they were outpaced and outthought by opponents vying for a promotion place in Division Two whilst the Scarlets haven’t won a single game in Division One.

Seasiders take a big half time lead

Luke Dedman and his experience Seasiders’ pack ensured that half backs Cam Broadhurst and Lloyd Thomas had quality possession aplenty and it came as no surprise when No 10 Thomas opened the scoring from close range as the opposing back row fell for his dummy and dart through the posts for a try which he also converted.

There was no shortage of effort from Pembroke as Will Edwards, Johnny Palmer, skipper Seamus Wiseman (who was later shown a red card for an accidental high tackle) and Lloyd Thomas tried to gain more possession for Luke Alderwick to utilise but The Seasiders doubled their lead as they spread play in both directions and set up a series of phases before winger Matthew Morgan crossed in the corner and Thomas did well to add the extras from wide out.

Then canny flanker Dan Colley scored an unconverted try against his old team mates as he rounded off a carefully-controlled line-out drive to cross the whitewash, and although Thomas for once was off-target with the conversion he made amends from the last move of the half when The Scarlets were penalised and he knocked over the three-pointer.

Fewer points in a scrappy second half

The second half was on the scrappy side as both sides maintained their commitment but in the Scarlets’ case lacked a little confidence and handling moves broke down – and The Seasiders perhaps took their feet off the gas a little with another game coming on Saturday.

They still managed two more penalties from Lloyd Thomas before one of the loudest cheers of the evening was reserved for popular former Scarlets’ skipper Scott Powell, who came off the bench and twisted his way clear at a maul and ploughed over for an unconverted try.

Luke Dedman collected the new Plate trophy and Lloyd Thomas received the man of the man of the match award, perhaps just ahead of the Broadhurst brother Cam and Jack at numbers nine and eight!
