Jac Bennett - try scorer for Narberth before injury (Myrddin Dennis)

Premiership Cup:

Otters gain last-ditch cup progress

Narberth 26 - Bonymaen 22

A late try by skipper Tom Powell helped Narberth make progress in this competition at the expense of Bonymaen, who had staged an excellent fight back to capture the lead deep in injury time added for an unfortunate injury to outstanding 18-year-old back rower Jac Bennett, who had really caught the eye on full debut for The Otters but after only four minutes of the second half broke his ankle.

Jac’s father Gareth was an outstanding Narberth  player and coach before joining Whitland but was there to watch Jac play really well in the  ball-winning stakes and scoring a cracking support try – and asl in local rugby will wish this talented teenager a speedy recovery and return to action.

Bonymaen showed what a useful team they are at the start as No 10 Laurence Thomas slotted a second-minute penalty but the lead was short-lived as The Otters responded as their pack won possession and Lewys Gibby, playing out of position on the wing, three a long pass that allowed Hedd Nicholas in near the clubhouse corner.

But some slack work in ball-retention allowed Bonymaen to score a try by second row Brandon Owens to cross – but No 10 Thomas missed the conversion.

Back came The Otters as Jac Bennett and Caleb Salmon made good breaks which came to nothing but then a mazy Gibby run saw Bennett lurking with intent to score a smashing try, converted by Rogers to go with a penalty that put the homesters 15-8 ahead at the break.

Rogers also opened the second half with a penalty but Bonymaen kept plugging away and they fought back with the introduction of two new props and skipper Garan Williams scored two tries for his work as hooker and leader, one converted by Thomas so that they led 22-21 after Rogers had narrowly missed two penalty attempts.

He was given a third chance wide out but skipper Tom Powell took the brave decision to kick to the corner and Rogers plugged them into an attacking lineout from which it was appropriate that Powell should be awarded the try.

Rogers also added the conversion to ensure that Bonymaen needed a try to win but their last desperate efforts to try and break out of Narberth’s defensive stranglehold failed and The Otters edged their way into the next round!

Narberth: Ashley Sutton: Lewys Gibby; Hedd Nicholas; Jonathan Rogers; Jac Evans: Osian Evans; Alex Williams: Bradley Davies; Tom Clarke; Ryan Rees: Sam Martin; Caleb Salmon: Jac Bennett; Tom Powell (Capt); Roy Osborne. Replacements: Kyle Hamer; George Rossiter; Will Blackburn; Josh Hamer; Rhys Harris; Geraint Llewellyn; Llew Jones.

Championship Cup:

Preseli Men miss out to late penalty

Gowerton 28 - Crymych 27

Lee Griffiths - two tries for Crymych hookerCrymych came agonisingly close to victory at Gowerton but a last-gasp penalty was again the undoing of the Preseli Men after so much effort put in by the entire squad at the Athletic Ground against a team nicknamed ‘The Starch’ by their supporters.
.
Dynamic Hooker Lee Griffiths led for Crymych with a brace of tries as others were scored by No 8 Tom Taylor and winger Ianto Davies, plus conversions by centre Ifan Davies and full back Adam Phillips, who also kicked a penalty.

But Gowerton lasted the pace just that little better and go through to the second round, leaving Crymych to reflect on what might have been.

Division One Cup:

Gwion guides Seasiders to cup success

Tenby United 35 - Pontarddulais 7

Luke Dedman - 300th game for Tenby United Tenby United ran in four tries to make progress in the WRU Division One Cup against a Pontarddulais side currently lying fifth in the same division as The Seasiders – and there was further cause for celebration because second row Luke Dedman, a former skipper for several recent seasons, was making a remarkable 300th appearance, whilst Max Boswell, the 18 year old grandson of club forwards’ coach Ossie Boswell, had 25 minutes at the end to mark his debut after leading Pembroke Youth to the league and cup double last campaign.

Dom Colman opened the Tenby account with an early unconverted try before having to go off injured, his place taken by Jake Roberts, whilst The Bont showed they are capable of causing upsets as they responded with a try for centre Josh Gross, converted by Liam Lazarus, from an interception of a careless pass.

It certainly stung The Seasiders into an awareness of the need for controlled play – and some good handling allowed winger Gwion Jones to snatch back the initiative with a try converted by No 10 Lloyd Thomas.

As Dan Colley, Jack Brown, Alex Jenkins, Ethan Morgan, Dan Allen and Hywel Baker proved to be good ball winners,  Tenby were awarded two penalties, converted by Lloyd Thomas, to help his side to an 18-7 lead – and he added a third early in the second half before The Seasiders scored as good a try as seen at Heywood Lane for a long time when the ball was turned over near their home line and at least 12 pairs of hands were involved before Gwion Jones was perfectly placed to take the final pass at the other end.

Thomas again added the extra points and grabbed a converted try to take his personal haul to 20 points to round off the scoring – and take Tenby into the draw for the next round hoping for another home tie!

Tenby United: Gwion Jones: Matthew Lewis; Tom Edmonds; Jack Gooding; Jordan Asparassa: Lloyd Thomas; Kieran Machin: Hywel Baker; Dan Allen; Ethan Morgan: Alex Jenkins; Luke Dedman: Dan Colley; Jack Brown; Dom Colman. Replacements: Joe Poole; James Morgan; Max Boswell; Dai Jones; Harry Rossiter; Fletcher Broadhurst.

Division Two Cup:

Borderers concede too many first-half points

Whitland 13  - Resolven 29

Owyn Griffiths (another try for Whitland)Resolven had previously lost all three of their league matches in Division One (West Central) but finally found some form at Parc Llwyn Ty Gwyn as they built a 22-point advantage over Whitland before The Borderers finally fought back and from then on more than matched their opponents but were never able to turn pressure into enough points to complete what would have been a famous come-back.

Will Hughes set the home fight back into reality with two penalties and he also converted a try by in-form centre Owyn Griffiths, who rounded off some good ball retention and then quick hands which gave him just the space he needs.

All Resolven could produce in the second period was a try by Josh Dowley, converted by Aaron Lewis, who had also claimed two points in the first period as his team had crossed for tries by Dan Gross, Dylan Cole, Fraser Thompson and Ben Collins.

Whitland: Jack Flanagan: Gareth Davies; Dom Davies; Owyn Griffiths; Oli Bujega: Deian Davies; Will Hughes: Charlie Watson; Marc Jones; Trystan Bowen: Njabulo Matondo; Benji Kirk: Rhys Nicholas; Dan Bennett (Capt); Osian Smith. Replacements: Luke Starkey; Alan Proctor; Jack Evans; Wihan Fryer; Morgan Lewis.

Haverfordwest push forward (William John)

Division Three Cup:

Blues’ pack power pays dividends

Haverfordwest 33 - Nantymoel 17

Haverfordwest trailed by 7-17 at the interval after  Nantymoel had taken first use of the strong wind and established their lead – but it was a different story after the break as there forced to opt for uncontested scrums as they suffered at the hands of The Blues’ renowned pack power, but also forcing them to play with 14 men for the rest of the game as The Blues grabbed 26 unanswered points.

Nant took an early 10-point lead with tries from Declan Williams and Callum Bachelor – and added a third later on by Timothy Clemett alongside a Williams conversion, with Haverfordwest managing a try by livewire flanker Matty Phillips which Liam Eaton converted.

But the second half saw The Bont struggle to maintain enough forward momentum as The Blues added four further tries, all by forwards involved,  by prop Dan Berry, Ben Carrington Teifion Owen and skipper Karl Busch, three of them converted by No 10 Eaton.

Haverfordwest: Guy Barrons: Archie Thomas; Gabriel Thicker; Iestyn Arnold;  Scott Candler: Liam Eaton; Ioan Hawkridge-Jones: Dan Berry; Iestyn Bevan; Tom Carrington: Teifion Owen; Mark Busch (Capt): Mikey Griffiths; Matty Phillips; Jake Evans. Saints struggle after bright start

Crynant 29 - St Davids 17

Bob Froy - St Davids points scorerSt Davids made a fairly bright start as they travelled to Crynant, from the West Central region, but then lost their way and had few complaints in handing a first victory of the season to a team from the Neath/Port Talbot area.

Bob Froy opened The Saints’ account with a try he also converted but the home side fought back with a try  by winger Steffan John and a penalty from scrum half Jac Hawkes.

Froy restored The Saints’ advantage and then second row Iestyn Owen added their second try, converted by Froy, to open up a 17-8 lead for Jack Dudley’s team but Crynant responded right on half time with a try by No 8 and captain, Dafydd Jones to trail 13-17 at the break.

The second half saw Crynant get on top as skipper Thomas added his second score from a forward surge and Hawkes converted to with three well-struck penalties as The Saints lost a little discipline and paid the price of a disappointing exit from the competition.

St Davids: Iwan Davies: Zac Morgan; Harvey Lavin; Will Savage; Bob Froy: Ben Joyce; Owain Swaine: Ethan Griffiths; Chris Cooper; Adam Williams: Iestyn Owen; Noah Dark: Harvey Godkin; Aaron Foster; Nathan Foster (Capt). Replacements: Joe Nash; Dan Murphy; Ian Kavanagh; Mike Gurney; Andrew Lamb; Morgan Griffiths.

Scarlets lose their way after a big half-time lead

Fall Bay 36 - Pembroke 32

Fall Bay on the attack against PembrokePembroke made good use of the strong wind at Fall Park as they established a 27-10 interval lead but then the team lying fourth in 4 (West) B fought back to edge through by four points in an entertaining, but frustrating, day for the Scarlets as they again used eight of last season’s  very successful youth team and showed their battling qualities despite losing Dan Davies and then Peter Muller in the opening 15 minutes.

The Scarlets had four tries shared by Tommy John, Robin Badham, Rhys Johns and Jack Nicholas, with influential Jarred Sharratt, who had switched from his regular scrum half berth to wear the No 10, slotted three of them and also added three penalties.

But Bay outside half Callum McKenzie exerted the major influence on events as he not only kicked tactically well after the interval, to claim two tries, along with three conversions.

Other home tries came from prop Jason Holland, second row Dylan Morgan, skipper Connor Smart and back rower Callum McDermott  and although Pembroke captain Lloyd Davies, Tommy Oakley Will Edwards, and the back row gave 100% they fell just short in the final analysis.

Pembroke: Rhys Johns: TJ Jones; Luke Alderwick; Jack Nicholas; Rhys Griffiths: Jarred Sharratt; Josh Greenwood: Lloyd Davies (Capt); Dan Davies; Tommy Oakley: Sam Smith; Will Edwards: Jack Oliver; Rhydian Eynon; David Rogers. Replacements: Peter Muller; Dan Gosnold; Robin Badham; Charlie Shiels.

Pembrokeshire KO Cup – Plate Quarter Final:

Bulls bow out as Cardis use wind well

Crymych Teirw 14 - Cardigan 28

Colin Davies -try for Cardigan 41 year old No 8Cardigan moved into the semi-finals of the KO Plate competition as they made the short journey to take on neighbours Crymych Teirw at park Lloyd Thomas and used the win to their best advantage to open up a 21-0 interval gap.

Then they added a fourth converted try soon after the restart and then defended well as the less-experienced Bulls fought hard but could only halve the deficit before they ran out of time.

Cardigan half backs  Jac Davies and Llyr Jones used the wind for position in that opening 40 minutes and were rewarded with good tries by No 9 Jones, wingers Jack Taylor and Iwan John, all converted by No 10 Davies.

Crymych needed a flier to the second period but received a real set back after the oranges as The Teifisiders launched an early raid and there was no stopping Colin Davies from getting on the try sheet, the wily old campaigner powering over for Davies to land his fourth conversion.

It says much for The Bulls’ commitment that they battled hard, with skipper and their man of the match Luke Freebury leading by example as replacements Tomos Davies and Steffan Rees both crossed the whitewash and Elgan Wilson added two conversions.

Crymych: Dylan Roberts: Luke Allsworth;  Hedd James; Owain Rees; Gruff Williams: Elgan Wilson; Callum James: Lian Barber; Sion Wilson; Lloyd Hughes: Luke Freebury (Capt); Steffan Morris: Dafydd Gibby; Griff Lloyd; Osian Thomas. Replacements: Tomos Davies; Steffan Rees, Robert Davies; Gruff Howells; Morgan Davies; Aled Harries; Hedd George; Nick Bevan.
