Alex celebrates 300 in Otters’ double win over students

Narberth 31 - Cardiff Met 12

Narberth had a day of celebrations at The Lewis Lloyd Ground as they not only completed the double (having won 30-10 in Cardiff) over a Cardiff Met side three places above them in the table, with Lewys Gibby again man of the match, but popular prop Bradley Davies took part in his 100th game for The Otters and, remarkably, outstanding second row Alex Jenkins received a standing ovation as he walked out for the 300th time in the club colours!

With both teams known for their running rugby the first half was a relatively quiet affair in terms of points as The Otters led 12-7 thanks to a second-minute try by Nick Gale, which the in-form full back also converted, and then winger Josh Davies did well to spun his way out of two tackles and reach the line.

But then The Students reduced the deficit right on the break as they were awarded a penalty try and home flanker Caine Rees-Jones received a yellow card in the process.

The Otters refused to be knocked out of their rhythm, however, and within three minutes of the restart Josh Davies sped through for his second try, converted by Gale – and nine minutes later Gibby grabbed the try of the match with a run up the left flank and superbly acrobatic dive into the left corner.

The Students deserve credit for battling away and they reduced the deficit with a try by their skipper and flanker Bertie Taylor from a back row move but The Otters had the final word when replacement Josh Evans crossed the whitewash and Gale rounded off another good day with the conversion.

In the clubhouse after the game Lewys Gibby collected his man of the match award from Ken Morgan and Bradley Davies received his memento from the supporters club off Sally Morris and his commemorative wine from Rob ‘Basher’ Lewis – and Alex Jenkins collected his coveted special club cap from former Welsh second row Ian Gough and a memento from Wendy Rossiter on behalf of the supporters.

Narberth: Nick Gale: Ashley Sutton; Ilan Phillips; Ianto Griffiths; Josh Davies: Jonathan Rogers; Lewys Gibby: Bradley Davies; Kyle Hamer; Tom Slater: Rhys Williams; Alex Jenkins: Tom Powell (Capt); Caine Rees-Jones; Roy Osborn. Replacements: George Rossiter; Sean Janes; Josh Hamer; Josh Evans; Ben Thomas.

Division One (West):

Preseli Men Power to table-topping victory

Crymych 17 - Llangennech 5

Carwyn Phillips - try for Crymych skipperCrymych’s remarkable season at the head of Division One (West) continued as they fended off a strong challenge by third-placed Llangennech to maintain their proud unbeaten record that now stretches to 13 wins and a draw, with no defeats so far in this very tough section.

The Preseli Men held a slight edge throughout but all they had to show for their efforts was a penalty try awarded during a period of pressure where the visitors were adjudged to have illegally dropped a drive on their line.

The home defence was outstanding and Llangennech were pointless at the break, which came immediately after Crymych had swiftly switched play from their own 22 to just five minutes out but lost possession so that a vital second score was not grabbed!

The Preseli Men continued to maintain their momentum after the break and full back Adam Phillips slotted a penalty after good work by Llyr Davies, Cai Ifans and Trystan Griffiths, making a welcome return at No 8 after a period out of the area with his opera singing.

They made the game safe when skipper Carwyn Phillips, playing in the centre, was well-placed to claim their third try, again converted by Adam Phillips – and although Llangennech had the final word with a try from No 8 Jordan Saunders it was a case of too little, too late as Crymych now have their eyes firmly fixed on the three promotion places – and eager to continue this sort of form to make that dream a reality.

Crymycjh: Adam Phillips: Owain Evans; Gethin Gibby; Carwyn Phillips (Capt); Dafydd Phillips: Ifan Phillips; Huw Rees:   Dylan Phillips; Lee Griffiths; Ryan Rees: Matthew Freebury; Rhys Davies: Llyr Davies; Cai Ifans; Tristan Griffiths. Replacements: Jonathan Clout; Thomas Davies; Llyr Evans; Rhydian Howells; Ned Bennett.

13 tries for Aber in runaway win

Aberystwyth 83 - Pembroke 5

Tom Lewis - scored only try for PembrokePembroke made the long journey to Aberystwyth and although they lost heavily they continued with their creditable aim of fulfilling every fixture no matter what the score, and although they conceded 13 tries they never gave up trying.

They had already lost 73-19 at Crickmarren and again found it hard-going with over 20 players on their injury list but a bonus came with the fact that they were able to give a run out in the final quarter to youth players Taylor Gullam, Liam Topp, Owain Taylor and Charlie Shields – and the quartet all acquitted themselves well.

Lloyd Davies and Andrew Evans battled as hard as ever and Tom Cabot carried well, with outside half Tom Lewis scoring their only try as they trailed 52-5 at the interval.

For the record, Ben Jones led the Aber try fest with four tries alongside two apiece for Iestyn Thomas and Carwyn Evans – and also on their scoresheet were Rhodri Evans, Jac Jones, Kanjama Fasuluku, Austin Ellis Jones and Steffan Nutting, whilst outside half Steffan Rees contributed nine conversions.

Division Two (West):

Makeshift Seagulls pay the price

Tycroes 35 - Fishguard & Goodwick 5

Adam Bowen - grabbed a late try for FishguardFishguard & Goodwick travelled to Tycroes with several key players absent and paid the inevitable price as the opposition played with skill levels and commitments that belied their tenth place in the table as they were on top from the opening stages and ran in six tries before replacement prop Adam Bowen grabbed a late consolation score for The Seagulls.

There was no shortage of effort from the likes of skipper Chris Shousha, Romeo Colella Will Lewis and Iwan McVeigh but Tycroes went ahead as early as the 6th minute with a try by flanker Sion Jones.

Others followed from No 8 Steff Jones, centre Sion Jones, winger Dan Thomas, flanker Sam Iles and a penalty try to go with a Rhys Thomas penalty.

Tycroes stay tenth and Fishguard remain eighth but will be hoping for greater strength in depth next week as they play host to Milford Haven, another side below them in the table but looking to upset the odds as Tycroes did here!

Fishguard & Goodwick: Dan Cleary: Kai Bailey; James Reynolds; Sion Rowlands; Dylan Scott: James Griffiths; Max Jones: Will Delaney; Cai Llewellyn; Iwan McVeigh: Griff Williams; Richard Hunter: Will Lewis; Chris Shousha (Capt); Sion Colella. Replacements: Adam Bowen; Gwilym Evans; Mark Butler.

Toby Smith - opened scoring for Tenby (Susan McKehon)

Seasiders stumble after five wins on the bounce

Tenby United 16 - Carmarthen Athletic 19

Harry Rossiter - 11 points for Tenby UnitedTenby United’s hopes of a sixth successive league win were brought to an abrupt standstill as they went down to a home defeat at the hands of a Carmarthen Athletic side placed five below them in the table.

It was doubly disappointing for The Seasiders since they were good value for a 16-5 interval lead and had other chances to put the game to bed but a mixture of handling errors and taking of wrong options allowed The Athletic to grown in confidence and after the oranges score 14 unanswered points.

Yet it was Carmarthen Athletic who scored from the kick-off as Tenby failed to gather the opening kick and the visitors grabbed a soft unconverted try from skipper Joel Reynolds.
But the lead was short lived as The Seasiders played some good rugby, with centre Toby Smith marking his return to action with a try from good turnover ball by Luke Dedman and his pack.

George Rossiter, also starting a game for the first time for a while, added the extras in the absence of Lloyd Thomas and also landed three penalties as reward for The Seasiders’ combined efforts.

It looked as if they would extend their winning run but they conceded a rather harsh penalty try to close the gap and then Matthew Harriot rounded off a well-controlled driving maul which outside half Scott Maynard converted – and The Athletic were delighted by a victory which sees them close the gap on the six teams above them as The Seasiders dropped from second to fourth spot in the table.

Tenby United: Luke Hartland: Max Brindley; Luke Waygood; Toby Smith; Matt Morgan: Gwion Jones; Cam Broadhurst: Frankie Boyd; Joe Poole; Rob Luly: Tom Barrass; Luke Dedman (Capt): Charlie Potching; Jake Roberts; Jack Broadhurst. Replacements:  Ethan Morgan; Dan Allen; Liam Pugh; Dan Colley; Jack Gooding.

All Blacks bag ten tries against basement strugglers

Alex Codd crashes over

Neyland 64 - Tregaron 0

Neyland completed a high-scoring double as they followed their previous 65-5 win at Tregaron with this ten-try success at The Athletic Ground – but the basement battlers from mid-wales deserve every credit for the part they played in an entertaining tussle where they went close on a few occasions.

This was especially so early on when the likes of Geraint Rowlands. Sion Rattray, Steven Roberts, Martin Lloyd and especially skipper Dewi Jones caught the eye alongside talented Neyland teenager Jasper Endean, who volunteered to play on permit for the opposition to help out on a day when six Tregaron farmers were at home on lambing duties!

Because of their yeoman work it took The All Blacks some time to get any points on the Martin Rees Memorial scoreboard but then their pace and enterprise paid off with tries coming from centres Adam Peel and Alex Codd, winger Stu Phillips, flanker Harrison Grice (2) and Bo 8 Ben Williams, four of them converted by George Evans, including a fantastic effort from the touchline after Peel had opened the scoring
.
Neyland continued to run the ball from all angles, with Chris Morgan always looking to counter-attack, but again Tregaron tackled like demons despite the power of home players Luke Griffiths-Dawes, Alex Swales, Jack Harries Iestyn and Owain Evans.

Alex Codd put George Evans in for a try and it was followed by others from Codd (his second as reward for looking very sharp, Iestyn Evans, and Ollie Rothero (after good work by Owen Hamer and Evans.

Neyland: Chris Morgan: Stu Phillips; Alex Codd; Adam Peel; Ben Milward: George Evans; Owen Hamer: Luke Griffiths-Dawes; Alex Swales; Jack Harries: Dan Hart; Iestyn Evans: Harrison Grice; Owain Evans; Ben Williams. Replacements: Richard Jones; Craig Power; Mark James; Ollie Rothero.

Saints battle hard against table toppers

Lampeter 31  - St Davids 7

Aled Davies - scored a good try for St DavidsSt Davids made the long journey to high-flying Lampeter for this Friday evening floodlit league match and battled really hard against one of the best sides in the section who had already won by 73-3 in St Davids.

But there was never any likelihood of a repeat margin as the Saints trailed by 21-0 at half time but had already shown enough forward power and solid defence by their back division to concede just two scores in the second period and manage a late consolation try of their own.

Leading the way for Lampeter was classy outside half Osian Jones, who claimed two tries and added three conversions for a personal haul of 16 points as other tries came to Rhys Douglas (2) and Brynmor Jones.

But St Davids had praise from coach Jack Dudley for the way that they stuck to their task, with second row Tommy Reynolds being nominated for man of the match for the way he played out of position, as did skipper Nathan Foster for a while until he was glad to revert to the back row, with George Raymond, Rhys Price and Morgan Davies catching the eye in a very good all-round performance.

Their efforts were finally rewarded in the last minute of play where their pressure was rewarded when second row Aled Davies rounded off some good work with a powerful surge to the line, with full back Adam Phillips adding the extra points.

St Davids: Adam Phillips: Harvey Godkin; Nathan Foster (Capt); George Raymond; Morgan Davies: Aaron Foster; Zac Morgan:  Adam Williams; Rhys Price; Ben Evans: Aled Davies; James Goldsmith: Andrew Jones; Tommy Reynolds; Tom Clark. Replacements: Ryan John; Charlie Lavin; Kieran Jones; Bob Froy; Dan Murphy.

Llangwm scrum half Josh Richards spots a gap

Wasps work hard against powerful Aber

Llangwm 12 - Aberaeron 42

Matthew Rees - try for Llangwm front rowerAberaeron gained their expected victory at Pill Park but Llangwm were clearly intent on making sure they pushed their opponents all the way and although they could have few grouses about defeat they could be forgiven for believing that the scoreline didn’t do justice to the part they played in the match.

Aberaeron had won at home by 95-0 but although they led 21-0 at the interval The Wasps had half chances which they were unable to turn into points through a mixture of wrong options and good defence by the visitors.

But The Wasps grabbed two good tries in the final quarter through skipper Ieuan Power, who was on the bench carrying an injury niggle but came on to plough over the line, as did fellow prop Matthew Rees alongside a conversion by outside half Kieran Owen.

For Aberaeron there were tries by No 8 (2), second row Hefin Williams, centre Gethin Jenkins, centre Rhodri Jenkins and finally by winger Iwan Lloyd alongside six conversions from centre Rhodri Jenkins.

Llangwm: Luke Dyer: Dan Ridge; Yale Grice; Matthew Hughes; Jack Roberts: Kieran Owen; Josh Richards: Matthew Rees; Phil Llewellyn; Andrew Milward: Dave Reynolds; Gethin Bateman: James Lewis (Capt); Aled Morgan; Ian Griffiths. Replacements: Ieuan Power; Dan Morgan; Gavin Jones; Dylan Philpott; Luke Bamford.

Teifisiders take a win double over Llan

Llanybydder 19 - Cardigan 51

Tom Taylor - another try in Cardigan winCardigan continued their good form of late as they easily beat Llanybydder after leading 22-5 at half time and keeping control thereafter despite Llan managing another two tries as The Teifisiders amassed eight good tries of their own by playing some good running rugby.

Yet Llanybydder took the lead for the only time when scrum half Will Evans, one of three brothers in the home team, sniped through to the line – but this reverse stung Cardigan into increasing their tempo and they scored three tries from No 10 Jac Davies, centre Geraint Williams and flanker Rhodri Davies, two converted by Llyr Jones to go with a well-struck penalty.

To be fair to Llanybydder they battled away and in the second half added tries from full back Matthew Rowlings and replacement scrum half Llyr James, both converted by Llyr Tobias.

But Cardigan  came at them again with five more tries via full back Alun Jenkins, replacement Tom Griffiths (2), centre Geraint Williams again and No 8 Tom Taylor, with another wow conversions from skipper Llyr Jones to take them past 50 points.

Cardigan:  Alun Jenkins: Kieran Greenland; Geraint Williams; Ben Rogers; Iwan John: Jac Davies; Llyr Jones (Capt): Will Brice; Luke Palmer-Davies; Andrew Fletcher: Sion Phillips; Dean Harries: Rhodri Parry-Jones; Rhodri Davies; Tom Taylor. Replacements: Nathan Bowen; Andrew Jones; Aaron Tomkinson; Kieran Hurley; Tom Griffiths.
