All Blacks celebrate title with eight-try bonanza

Neyland 54 - Pembroke 10

Neyland rounded off a fantastic league campaign in terrific fashion with a thumping win over a Pembroke where they used the pave and power that has served them so well this campaign to establish a 28-0 interval leaded and were 47 points in front before The Scarlets had two of the final three tries which was reward for never throwing the towel in after the home side completed the double, having already won 41-31 at Crickmarren.

Leading the way for a super-fast Neyland team were winger Josh Wats (three tries) and skipper George Williams, who scored two tries, including the best of some very good tries. Others came from No 10 Oli Rothero as he received a top service from Owen Hamer, and Fletcher Picton (from his first touch after coming on at half time). Others who made major contributions were George Evans, Ben Williams and Owain Evans but this was a top-quality squad performance as the perfect end to a memorable season and we will produce a very complete tribute later next week because staffing difficulties prevent us doing so here)

The visitors were depleted behind the scrum and used permit players in Fletcher Broadhurst, the Tenby United No 9 who was voted The Scarlets’ man of the match, and was joined by team mate Iori Richards and Wil Williams (Crymych). They also had eye-catching performances in defence by Robin Badham, playing his last game before retiring at 39, Deryn Williams and Scott Powell, with Johnny Palmer having to play the whole match at prop. Outside half Lewis Davies pulled a muscle after 15 minutes but stayed throughout – and replacement forwards Dan Gosnold and Tom Cabot also played well when they came on.

The trophy was presented to George Williams by Anthony Buchanan,  of Welsh and Scarlets’ fame, and the celebrations went on long into the night before they start thinking about their final match, when they take on St Davids RFC at the Athletic Ground on Wednesday, starting at 7pm.

WRU Division Three Cup – Semi-Final:

‘Brilliant’ Cardis carry District H flag with distinction

Cardigan 40 - Rhymney 34

Congratulations to Cardigan on reaching the final of the WRU Division Three Cup, where all teams in the third divisions right across Wales set out and The
Teifisiders now play Newport Saracens in the final after the Gwent side had beaten Tycroes 31-29.

The Cardis beat a highly-fancied Rhymney side which has dominated Division Three (East) to such an extent that they are already promoted and need just two points from three matches to go up as champions – but on this occasion found Cardigan too hot to handle as they trailed 27-15 at half time and their last seven points only came with the last kick of the half.

It was a similar story after the interval as Cardigan played some outstanding rugby in attack, and particularly in defence, to take a 40-22 lead before Rhymney added tries as late as the 92nd and 96th minutes of a very long game!

Dynamic flanker Daf Rotie grabbed two first half tries alongside another from classy winger John Lumb and again the metronomic place-kicking of Shaum Leonard played a huge part as he converted all three before the oranges and also slotted two penalties as his pack showed real grit against a powerful opposing pack.

John Lumb added his second score after the interval which Leonard converted, as well as two more penalties, for a personal haul of 20 points – and so Cardigan have already received messages from clubs in Pembrokeshire who are delighted to see their success – and now it remains to be seen where the final will be played for a club that has every right to feel immensely proud on this very special day!

Cardigan:  Shaun Leonard:  John Lumb; Iwan John; Emyr Harries; Alun Jenkins: Jac Davies; Iwan Toft: Will Brice; Luke Palmer-Davies; Ben Hughes: Dan Jones; Dean Harries: Keiran Hurley; Daf Rotie; Marcus Castle (Capt). Replacements: Andrew Jones; Sion Phillips; Guto Davies; Nathan Brown; Colin Davies; Llyr Jones; Aaron Evans; Jack Taylor.

Otters just miss out on vital bonus points

Neath 29 - Narberth 21

Narberth showed commitment aplenty against third-placed Neath as they battled back from 0-17 and 7-22 with two excellent tries just before half time that left them a single point adrift but yellow cards and one red one saw them reduced to 13 men at one time, when Neath grabbed their fourth try and left The otters just missing out on a losing bonus point for being with seven points and another for not scoring four tries (they had three!).

Fellow stragglers Bonymaen, on the other hand, lost by 28 points to title favourites Merthyr (59-31) but picked up a vital point for scoring four tries, which puts them two points behind Narberth in the quest to see who goes down alongside Newcastle Emlyn, but with a precious game in hand!
Winger Rhodri Wall put the Welsh All Blacks ahead with a try and when Roy Osborn was yellow-carded alongside young centre Llew Jones, Neath took control and others followed by Iestyn Morgan and Wall again, one converted by Steff Williams as the visitors clearly missed the influential No 8.

But Narberth rallied rallied when pacy winger Dean James sped through for No 10 Osian Evans to convert, as he did late on in the period when scrum half Lewys Gibby added to his tally and young centre Llew Jones adding a third after his 10-minute rest, both goaled by Evans, the Otters went in with an optimistic hope for the second half because they had looked the better side after those early setbacks.

Unfortunately, replacement Alex Williams was yellow carded and Llew Jones received a second so The Otters were left with 14 men for the remainder of the game and the home side grabbed their bonus-point try through centre Kieran Charles – and Williams conversion agonisingly widened the gap to eight points and left The Otters nothing to show for all their considerable efforts.

Narberth: Ashley Sutton:  Rhys Harris; Llew Jones; Hedd Nicholas; Dean James: Osian Evans; Lewys Gibby: George Rossiter; Kyle Hamer; Tom Kaijaks: Will Blackburn; Rhys Williams: Caleb Salmon: Tom Powell (Capt); Roy Osborn. Replacements: Tom Clarke; Rob Evans; Chris Davies; Sam Martin; Josh Hamer; Sam Davies; Alex Williams; Harrison Griffiths.

Depleted Crymych pay a heavy price

Trebanos 45 Crymch

Crymych battled hard against Trebanos but find themselves in even deeper trouble at the foot of the table as the home side claimed seven tries and Crymych only grabbed two themselves – but one could feel sympathy for the Preseli Men because the week before, their game was postponed because of an illness which swept through the team – and they were still depleted for this important tussle.

They were 19-0 down at half time and although they had tries from skipper Carwyn Phillips, converted by Elis Thomas, and replacement Jac Delaney, the home side ran in tries by centre and captain Steffan Lewis (2), winger Sam Lewis, No 8 Matthew Hutchinson, hooker Conor Thomas and flanker Rhodri Jones (2), with five of them converted by No 10 Kris Jones.

This easy win for Trebanos puts them in eighth place in the table, with nine wins and a draw from 20 starts, whilst The Preseli Men are 12, with 5 wins and 15 defeats – but with four matches still left they still have a chance of avoiding the ‘Dreaded Drop’!

Crymych: Adam Phillips: Rhodri George; Lawrence Headlam; Jon Hill; Jac Griffiths: Elis Thomas; Ianto Davies: Gruff Williams; Lee Griffiths; Ben Cox: Matthew Freebury; Osian Davies: Tom Taylor; Llyr Davies; Carwyn Phillips (Capt). Replacements: Will Delaney; Aled Harries; Rhys Davies; Jac Delaney; Hedd George.

Division Two (West):

Borderers bag big win at Betws

Betws 26 - Whitland 63

Whitland rounded off their season with a thumping 63-23 win at Betws, which earned them the double since they had won 31-13 at Betws earlier in the campaign – and earned The Borderers a final sixth place in the table, with six wins and ten losses.

They were already 35-14 ahead at the half way stage and finished up with nine tries as reward for some excellent running rugby but Shane Rossiter, playing on permit from Narberth Athletic, was the clear man of the match as he not only ran in a try but also converted eight tries as scrum half Gareth Davies added the other., giving him a personal haul of 21 points/

Other tries came from pacy winger Owyn Griffiths (2), back rower Iestyn Comey, skipper Dan Bennett,  replacement Tom Hughes, Dom Davies (2) and flanker Brandon Williams allow The Borderers to end their season on a high note!

Whitland: Olly Hughes: Deian Davies; Dom Davies; Will Hughes; Owyn Griffiths: Shane Rossiter; Gareth Davies: Trystan Bowen; Matt Driver; Ceiron Evans: Gavin Smith; Dan Bennett (Capt): Brandon Williams; Iestyn Comey; Jack Mason. Replacements:  Alan Proctor; Johnny Phillips; Raff Williams; Tom Hughes; Rhys Nicholas. Travelling Reserve: Luke Watkins.

Division Three (West):

Blues ease home against basement battlers

Haverfordwest 36 - Pontyberem 14

Haverfordwest completed their expected double over a Pontyberem side that had no wins and a solitary draw from their 15 league outings – but battled hard here as The Blues were always in control but lost other scores through over-eagerness or basic handling errors.

They had only won 23-13 at Ponty but this looked likely to be a far bigger margin at half time as they led 22-0 and were already assured of a bonus point from the four tries, scored by prop Dan Berry, pacy winger Scott Candler (2) and winger Jetman Temaki, the last converted by outside half Liam Eaton.

Pontyberem hit back with a try from Sion Colella, playing on permit from Fishguard, before Dan Berry claimed his second try as The Blues controlled matters up front before Temaki set up a try for his fellow countryman Crawford Hedmon; both from the tiny Pacific Ocean Island of Nauru when the season finishes, with centre Jack Codd converting both.

It says much for the visitors’ resolve that they grabbed a late score by Nathan Fisher, which Tom Lloyd converted, as he had the first – and Haverfordwest now have one final league game, against Llangadog, on May 3rd, already assured of fourth place in the section table.

Haverfordwest: Guy Barrons: Jetman Temaki; Jack Codd; Jack Evans; Gabriel Thicker: Liam Eaton; Isaac Kelso-Jones: Dan Berry; Jamie Zambas; Tom Carrington: Teifion Owen; Karl Busch (Capt): Jamie Phillips; Crawford Hedmon; Jake Evans. Replacements: Terry Lovell; Jack Evans; L Gainfort; Rhydian Watkins; Scott Candler. Reserve: Dyan Williamson.
