West Wales Intermediate Cup Final
Goodwick United 2- Morriston Olympic 1
Johnny Horgan and Rhys Dalling bagged the vital goals that secured Goodwick United West Wales Intermediate Cup against Swansea based Morriston Olympic at the Liberty Stadium.
This sweet cup victory was no more than what Nigel Delaney and Chris O’Sullivan’s team deserved. Having retained the Senior Cup last month, beating Hakin United 2-1 at the Bridge Meadow, they went a step further by capturing the West Wales silverware, thanks to Horgan and Dalling who found the back of the net, ironically they both scored on the Meadow, players who are always up for the big occasion.
Horgan struck first to give the Phoenix Boys a slender one-goal cushion at half time, 20 minutes and after the interval Dalling added a second goal that gave his side a little bit of breathing space.
Rock solid
But to their full credit Morriston Olympic clawed back a goal through Rhys Page Walker, and set up a tense finale as Goowick’s outstanding defence consisting of skipper Wayne O’Sullivan, Stefan Hayes, Scott Delaney and Anthony Couzens stood rock solid remainder as goal keeper James Gwilt pulled off some superb saves to keep the Swansea outfit at bay.
The last time that the Phoenix Boys played in this prestigious final was back in 2000 when they lost 1-0 against Mountain Dew at the Vetch Ground, the former home of Swansea City. However, Nigel Delaney and Chris O’Sullivan’s troops put that past disappointment to rest with this brilliant win at the Liberty Stadium, now home of Premier League Swansea City’s superb upgraded stadium.
Dream start
Horgan bagged the opener in the ninth minute, the left sided midfielder lobbed keeper Greg Evans from wide out for a dream start. Goodwick survived a couple of scares as defender Steff Hayes cleared a shot off the line from a corner and keeper James Gwilt tipped a stinging shot over the bar.
Rhys Dalling added a second goal in the 65
th minute, the deadly striker latched onto a Rob Morgans through ball and struck a shot over the advancing Evans. Three minutes later and Rhys Page Walker pounced on a rebound. Nervously Goodwick stayed firm for this sweet success, and there were ecstatic scenes from Goodwick players and fans at the final whistle.
"It's an outstanding achievement from this team. I knew we had a strong side this season but I could not have expected this," boss Delaney told PembrokeshireSport.co.uk.
"We knew they were a good footballing side because we had been to watch them.
"But we defended brilliantly and hit them on the break. And crucially, we took our chances and it's about putting the ball in the net.
"The players have been superb and I couldn't have asked for anymore from them - and the treble (Senior Cup, West Wales Cup and Division One title) is still on."
