Haverfordwest Academy under 14s recently travelled to the House of Sport in Cardiff to take part in the FAW National Futsal Finals and did really well to claim the runners-up spot.
Haverfordwest played Rhyl in the semi-final and scored two early goals but were soon in trouble at the half-time stage. Things got worse as Rhyl built up a 5-3 lead but a fine comeback took the score to 5-5 with penalties to settle the tie. Haverfordwest were more clinical with their finishing and went through to the final.
Tactics clash
The final against Cambrian and Clydach was noted for a contest of tactics. Haverfordwest passed the ball well in the first half, but Cambrian and Clydach had the patience to let them attack and scored a goal from a breakaway.
Cambrian made the score 2-0 but Haverfordwest's resilience and tenacity earned them a 2-2 draw before high tension in the penalty shoot-out saw a crucial miss and a win for a jubilant Cambrian and Clydach squad.
Haverfordwest could be proud of a good all-round team performance against the best teams at this level in Wales, to be worthy runners up in this national competition.
Squad: Morgan Thomas, Garin Gardner, Curtis Hicks, Levi Jones, Travis O’Connor, Phil Jones (coach), Henry McBeth, Nick Jones, Max Brindley, Morgan Thomas, James Williams.
