Hakin United are through to the prestigious West Wales Intermediate Cup semi- finals after dramatically beating Pontlliw on penalties at the Obs.
With score level at 1-1 after 120 minutes of cagey football, it was the Vikings who kept their nerve to win the following dreaded penalty shootout in can be best described as a hard fought tie was both teams played their part.
Both teams came into this mouth-watering tie in decent form and going well in their respective league campaigns. Pontlliw are currently second in the Camarthenshire Premier League, unbeaten with a played nine, won nine record.
In the 2
nd minute the visitors opened the scoring when former Haverfordwest County centre back Sam Rodon headed home at a corner.
This goal rocked Scott Davies’ Vikings as the visitors took the early initiative, however, the Vikings began to get more of the ball as they settled and were unlucky not to level matters as Nicky Woodrow’s firm header from inside the box flew straight into the grateful hands of keeper Lewis Gibbs.
Pontlliw narrowly held onto a one-goal cushion at half time, but after the break the hosts put the visitors under pressure.
In the 63
rd minute were rewarded as Hakin equalised, Camron Thomas’ free kick fell to Shane Walsh who squared for Jack Britton to find the back of the net from six yards.
There was no further scoring after 90 and 120 minutes, but it was the Vikings who broke Pontlliw’s hearts when Jack Britton, Leon Luby, Justin Harding, Nicky Woodrow all found the back of the net from the spot, it was left to 19-year-old Kieran King who showed maturity beyond his years to coolly stroke home the winner.
Hakin boss Scott Davies tweeted: "What an unbelievable shift from the boys yesterday, pure heart - couldn’t of asked for more!! Pontlliw were a quality outfit with quality supporters, good luck in your league lads. "
Both teams observed a minutes silence in memory of former Hakin player Eddie Collins.

Rooks come good in extra time

Carew grabbed four unanswered goals in the extra time period to impressively march into the last four of the West Wales Intermediate Cup at the expense of stunned Evans & Williams.
This season Evans & Williams who lie second in the West Wales Premier League, have played 17, won 9, drawn 3 and lost 5.
The Rooks suffered an early setback as Spencer Williams picked up a knock to be replaced by James Hinchliffe.
Ceri Brace’s team reshuffled as they finally broke the deadlock in the 48
th minute when Adam Muskett found the back of the net.
Two minutes later Iwan Izzard received a straight red card meaning his side were down to ten men, however in the 67
th minute the hosts were reduced to ten men as their skipper Mark Howells received his marching orders.
It remained 1-1 at the final whistle on 90 minutes, but in the extra time period the Rooks began to dominate as the hosts looked tired.
In the 99
th minute the visitors regained the lead as Shaun Whitfield made no mistake from the spot, four minutes later Hinchliffe added the third, before two quick fire goals by Thomas Cole completed the scoring.
It ensured the Rooks have reached the semi-finals for the first time since 2019 when they agonisingly lost in the final against Merlins Bridge.
