Super Cup:

Whitland 61 - Gorseinon 0

The Borderettes started their cup campaign with a comprehensive win over Gorseinon where the division one outfit could not compete with the pace and power of the much smaller Whitland team.

The first of eleven tries came from Nia Davies after a blind side move from a scrum and the most popular try of the game came next as Georgie Sturgess reaped the rewards of slick hands from Alice James and Cath Morley to touch down for her first ever try.

With the front row of Sara Medeni Davies, Sara Davies and Ceris Moyle dominating every scrum there was a constant stream of possession and after a series of forward drives Davies crossed for her second and completed her hat-trick directly from the kick off, sprinting through some weak defence to touch down.

Loads of tries from all-round effort

The backs were next on the score sheet with exciting runner Mari Griffiths stepping her way through the Gorseinon defence from the half way and full back Cath Davies touching down wide out after some slick hands from the mid field backs.

Griffiths again bamboozled the Gorseinon defence to score her second and No8 Angharad Williams scored the last try of the half, diving over a ruck American football style to touch down.

The Borderettes took their foot off the gas second half which allowed the gritty Gorseinon team some much needed possession but there was no way through the home defence with live- wire flanker Elin Hywel to the fore, making tackle after tackle. Karen Maze came off the bench to make a welcome return to the green and whites who went on to cross for a further three tries.

Williams powered over for her second, winger Heather Rees was put away to score after some slick hands from second row Beca Norris, who in turn crashed over to score the final try of the match as Norris also added 3 conversions.

Skewen 5 - Whitland 25

The two top teams in Wales were both ravaged by international call ups and injuries but they still managed to put on a spectacle for the crowd.

Whitland, playing with the wind, should have taken the lead in the first few minutes but a searing break by No 6 Keeley Evans came to nothing, Attack after attack was thwarted by a resolute Skewen defence and from a turn-over deep in their half their right wing sprinted away to score the first 5 pointer of the day.

That was the only time the black and ambers came into the Borderettes’ 22 and it was all out attack from the Whitland girls for the rest of the game. Veteran centre Karen Maze drew the scores level just before half time, powering over after an initial break by Alice James.

As the second half wore on the constant pressure told and further tries were added by Alice James, the ubiquitous Angharad Williams and Maze crossed for a brace to bring up her hat trick courtesy of some slick running by left wing Mari Griffiths.
