Welsh 'Messi from Kilgetty' is two-goal hero against Iceland

Liam Cullen - made his first start and scored his first international goals at senior level for Wales

Delighted Liam Cullen bagged his first international goals to help Wales to a crucial 4-1 victory against Iceland at the Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday night was hailed the Welsh ‘Messi from Kilgetty’.

The game could not have gone any better for the man from Kilgetty, who was a former pupil at Greenhill Tenby, who also made his second start under new manager Craig Bellamy.

The hosts fell behind as Andri Gudjohnsen found the back of the net, but two well taken goals from Cullen put Bellamy’s team ahead as the 25 year old got on the end of Brennan Johnson’s pinpoint cross, the second he reacted quickest as Daniel James’ shot was parried and he gobbled up the rebound which gave his side a slender 2-1 cushion at half time

After the break the Cullen set up Johnson for the third whilst Harry Wilson struck the fourth to secure the points.

On the night Montenegro gained a surprise win against Turkey in the other group match, as promotion was secured for unbeaten manager Craig Bellamy’s outfit.

Joe Allen (Narberth) who recently came out of retirement came on and replaced Mark Harris, it’s the second time two lads from Pembrokeshire have played for Wales at the same time, the first time it happened Simon ‘Digger’ Davies (Solva) and Mark Delaney (Goodwick United) played together.

“It is a dream come true for me,” said Cullen after the win.

“Going into this game, once I knew I was starting, I was thinking it was about time I got my first international goal.

“It went nicely and I got two and then I got an assist for Bren (Brennan Johnson), so a perfect night for me really.”
