John Bailey Memorial Tournament
Goodwick United 0 – Fishguard Sports 2
TWO goals in the second half by Jamie Vaughan and Jordan White secured a shock victory for Fishguard Sports against arch rivals Goodwick United at Phoenix Park.
Second Division Fishguard Sports produced a superb display as they overcame last season’s First Division history making treble winners, deservedly lifting the John Bailey Memorial trophy in their derby opponents’ own backyard.
Nigel Delaney’s Goodwick United outfit have lost a few key players from last season, but the new-look team still would have felt they had enough quality to overcome the Sports.
Earlier wins
The Sports beat Prendergast Villa 1-0 in the semi-final played earlier in the week, and a day later, Goodwick United thrashed Clarbeston Road 5-0, setting up a tasty derby final.
After a goalless first half, neither side created many scoring opportunities in front of a decent crowd at Phoenix Park. Sports’ striker Vaughan headed wide from close range, and just before half time Phoenix Lads skipper Kieran O’Brien struck a low shot from the edge of the area that struck the post.
Jamie strikes
The visitors finally broke the deadlock in the 65
th minute, man of the match Jordan White crossed from the left for lively Vaughan who buried his shot from six yards into the roof of the net.
Ten minutes later and the Sports doubled the lead, following a goalmouth melee that saw goal provider White score from close range to settle this derby affair.
