Narberth Rugby Club was the recent venue for an excellent evening of boxing organised by Kim Baker (Pendine ABC) and Graham Brockway (Merlin’s Bridge ABC) where opponents for top local boxers came from as far afield as King Alfred ABC (Somerset), Maelor ABC (near Wrexham) and Always ABC (Ringland Estate, Newport, Gwent).
Patrons enjoyed an excellent meal provided by Narberth RFC’s superb stewardess, Ann Lonsdale, and her crew before the 11 bouts got under way, with her partner, John Owen, keeping a weather eye on things in his role as club chairman.
One of a number of highlights during the boxing was the bout between Lewis Burrows (Merlins Bridge) and Josh Harries (Premier, Swansea), two emerging schoolboy boxers whose performance earned them a standing ovation before Burrows was announced the unanimous winner – and their reward was to be chosen as the ‘Best Bout’ of the evening by the officials, who were led by John Phillips, of Narberth.
Alex O’Sullivan (Merlins Bridge) maintained his undefeated record with his fifth win on the trot, beating Ceddi Jones (Porthcawl) in an absorbing clash of styles where Jones tried to use his greater strength to good effect in the first round but O’Sullivan came back strongly in rounds two and three, showing his excellent boxing skills, to shade the verdict
Tenby youngster Callum Haines took on CJ Williams (Maesteg) in the evening’s opening bout and boxed really well before missing out by a whisker in a split decision, whilst Charlie Sture (Pembroke) forced Kay Evans (Always) to take a standing count on his way to a very good unanimous points verd
ict.
Sean Lewis (Merlins Bridge) also lost on a split decision to Ben Evans (Maelor) and Emyr Simmons (Cardigan) went down to a unanimous points defeat against Ben Isaac (King Alfred) as the action continued apace.
In other bouts, Dylan Davies (Merlins Bridge) boxed an exhibition bout against Clayton Cook (Always), Peter Price (Pendine) lost to Craig Bishop (Always), Chris Rees (Trostre) lost narrowly to Josh Evans (Maelor) and Silvek Urbanski edged home against Zach Jenkins (Porthcawl).
The only disappointment for a knowledgeable crowd was the fact that the top senior bout between Sam Baker of Pendine and Len Evans (Maelor) was stopped very early on because Evans suffered a nastily cut eye and medical officer Dr Mummidi decided he could not continue, so the verdict went to a disappointed Baker, who would not have wanted to win such a manner.
But that aside it was an all-action evening with the officials as follows:
Official in Charge and referee: John Phillips.
Timekeeper: Billy Jones
Judge/Referees: Steve Glover and Mark Smith
Judges: Dilwyn Griffiths and Jennie Baker
MC: Bill Carne
