The Local Rugby Reports - 18th January 2025
Premier Division:
Off-form Otters no match for clinical Bargoed
Narberth 5 - Bargoed 36
The difference between life in the top four and the lower reaches was all too evident as Bargoed
completed the double over Narberth after beating them 19-0 earlier in the season – but on this
occasion Liam Gadd’s side weren’t able to take their chances, gifted the opposition points with
some awful mistakes – and were generally unable to produce the battling form they have shown of
late.
It was arguably The Otters most disappointing home display and they will be looking to put things
right on Saturday, when they travel to Llangennech, who beat The Otters 17-8 at the Lewis Lloyd
Ground and will be seeking to complete the double and push Narberth back into the bottom two of
the table, whilst improving their own chance of remaining in the Premiership division!

Preseli Men struggle in final quarter
Glynneath 43 - Crymych 17
With just 20 minutes of this match remaining Crymych were trailing 24-17 and still with a chance of at least collecting some bonus points after they had battled really hard – but the pressure told in those closing stages as they conceded 19 unanswered points and in the final reckoning had nothing to show for that first half, where the scoreline was only 12-17 against them.

Seasiders stumble a second time
Burry Port 31 - Tenby United 26
After winning their first nine matches, Tenby United followed the disappointment of defeat against Aberystwyth last week with another away loss that sees them trailing Aber, despite collecting two bonus points for being within seven points of Burry Port and scoring four tries.
Tenby had won the previous encounter 22-15 but astute coach Jonathan Evans knew this would be a real challenge, especially with key players like Lloyd Thomas out injured – and his worst fears must
have been realised as The Seasiders were 14 points adrift after only eight minutes – but showed something of their fighting spirit as they trailed by 14-21 by the break.
But The Seasiders were never able to gain control against a committed home side which is still fifth place in the table, whilst beating any side in the division – as they have proved with three wins on the trot, including a narrow win over leaders Aberystwyth and a mauling of Penclawdd, plus this victory over the Seasiders, who at least pouched those two bonus points to keep ahead of third- placed St Clears!

Mariners miss out in basement battle at Betws
Betws 30 - Milford Haven 13
With both teams having just one previous victory there was real importance attached to this match between the two bottom teams in the section table – with Milford Haven starting as slight favourites after beating Betws by a massive 52-14 at The Observatory Field.
But they have since suffered from a hefty injury list and in the final analysis here could have few complaints as the home side built an 18-10 interval lead and were in control thereafter.

Seagulls surprise Laugharne in low-scoring clash
Laugharne 7 Fishguard and Goodwick 8
Fishguard and Goodwick remain in a comfortable fourth place in the section table after this single-point victory at Wooford Park which saw Laugharne knocked off top spot as Lampeter maintained their 100% record and pouched five points in a 47-18 hammering of Nantgaredig.
And player/coach Nico Setaro and his talented team might look back on chances galore to add to their flimsy tally of a penalty try only for such a territorial advantage whilst opposite number Nathan Jenkins and his assistant Huw Evans might say that their yeoman defence was huge, especially considering what a young and relatively inexperienced squad they have.
The experience of Simon James, Gavin Walsh and Ryan McVeigh was especially helpful as second-half replacements in keeping the Seagulls’ youngsters strong in defence.
Laugharne:
Try: Penalty try
