Haverfordwest County 1 – Cardiff Met University 0

Super sub Ben Fawcett claimed a crucial second half winner for Haverfordwest County against Cardiff Met University at the Ogi Bridge Meadow Stadium under lights in front of a big crowd on Friday night.

The Bluebirds remain third in the table but they have now opened up a ten-point gap over the fourth placed Archers.

Haverfordwest County made three changes to the starting line up that drew with Caernarfon Town. In came Ricky Watts, Dan Hawkins, Owain Jones, with Luc Owen also included on the bench.

In a tight first half neither side really carved open a decent scoring chance; the closest the Bluebirds came to scoring was when Ricky Watts fired high and wide from just inside the box from an inch-perfect pass by Dylan Rees, whilst at the other end Archers‘ Gruffudd Morgan headed wide from a corner.

Dan Hawkins also had appeals for a penalty turned down as the striker appeared to bundled over in the box on a darting run through.

Iori Humphreys, who often found space on the right flank, also forced Kelland Absolom to make a near-post save from a low drive.

The second period saw Pennock introduce Fawcett, who replaced Dan Hawkins who had taken a heavy knock near the end of the first period.

The defining moment of a tight clash came in the 68th minute as the ever-alert Fawcett made no mistake as the substitute drilled his effort past a helpless Absalom.

The crucial goal stemmed from a long free kick by Luke Tabone from inside his own half, which fell to skipper Dylan Rees wide on the rightbefore the skipper played it into the box for Fawcett to pounce.

It was no more than  the Bluebirds deserved on the night as they showed good composure for the remaining period and so picked up another priceless win in what is the most successful season it has been in the top flight in the club’s history.
