Pembrokeshire 23 - Cardiff A 12

The Pembrokeshire Schools Rugby team recently travelled up to Ysgol Maes y Gwendraeth to face Cardiff A in the Lawrence Miller Bowl and came home with a thrilling victory and the reward is a wonderful opportunity to play at The Principality Stadium in the final.

A great, fast and physical game on the 3G surface at the school entertained the crowd who turned up in their masses to support both sets of players.

It was Pembrokeshire who got on the board first through young fly half Madoc Evans, from Tenby and Ysgol Bro Preseli, to bring the scoreboard into action but it wasn’t too long before Cardiff spotted a gap around the ruck to break through and score the first try of the game, bringing it to 3-5 at half time.

County build well after the break

Pembrokeshire got back into Cardiff’s 22 and won a penalty where Madoc stepped up again and slotted the kick, bringing it to 6-5. Alfie Luger, the co-captain from Ysgol Greenhill and Tenby United RFC, showed great support from a terrific break from Ifan Wyn Jones and crossed under the sticks before Dylan McGuire (Milford Haven School and Milford Haven RFC) notched the extra two points to bring the score to 13-5.

Pembs again got into the Cardiff A 22 and kept building pressure and the  boys played very smartly to try and keep the score board ticking over, as Madoc Evans stepped up and slotted a penalty to make the score 16-5.

But Cardiff soon hit back, scoring and converting to trail 16-12 to set up a nail-biting last 15 minutes but Deian James, of Ysgol Bro Preseli and Crymych RFC, powered his way across the line and Madoc Evans converted to bring the score to 23-12 in the county’s favour on the full-time whistle.

Great celebrations – and grateful thanks

So the Pembrokeshire squad were able to celebrate reaching the Bowl Final at the Principality Stadium on the 26th of April and fittingly the CKS players of the match are… the whole squad!!

The county team and officials would  like to thank their sponsors for their support, the referee for taking charge and to Ysgol Maes Y Gwendraeth for using the facility. Coaching Staff Aled Waters, Tom Meredith, Mike Jones, Rhys Fawcett, Dan Field and Finley Jones would also like to thank the parents and supporters for their continued support.
