Third Division Cup Final:

Cricketers ease through to silverware

Haverfordwest Cricket Club 2 - Tenby 2nds 1

Venue: Monkton Lane
Referee: Angus Scourfield
Assistants: Keith Amos and John Lewis

An extra time penalty from Nathan Kirkhouse secured the Third Division Cup for Haverfordwest Cricket Club after they had finished 1-1 with Tenby Seconds after 90 minutes.

The final was a tight affair and the Cricket Club took the lead in the first half in some style when striker Ashley Prior received the ball with his back to goal, turned his marker, and hammered a 20 yard shot into the top corner.

But the Seasiders fought back in the second half and levelled through Dec Escort – who fired home a superb direct free kick.

There was no further scoring in normal time but then in the first half of extra time – referee Angus Scourfield awarded the Cricket Club a penalty and Kirkhouse held his nerve to score what proved to be the winner, which completed a memorable double for the Cricket Club – who had already secured the league title.

Tenby meanwhile, finished runners up in the league so at least have the consolation of promotion.

Carew Seconds claimed the Fourth Division Cup with a hard fought over Milford United Seconds at Monkton Lane on Friday night.

They took the lead 25 minutes in when Mark Davies volleyed home from a corner and it remained that way until five minutes from time when striker James Adie made no mistake when he was set up by sub Sean O’Neill.

Milford had the better first 30 minutes and a cross by McKay was well taken by Carew keeper Dan James under pressure before a snapshot by McKay went wide. Then a free kick conceded on the edge of the box by Carew saw the resulting shot by Black well saved by keeper James as the first 20 minutes all Milford but with some poor finishing.

Carew started to come back into the games before the break and James Adie hit a shot from 25 yards which went just wide of Ashley Britton’s post. At the other end, Ryan Wilson broke down the right and a good cross was met by the Robins’ Mike McCarthy headed over the Carew bar.

The first goal came after 30 minutes when a good run into the box by Carew’s  Mark Davies saw his shot deflected for a Carew corner, which was fired over to the back post and found Chris Tooze unmarked to fire hard and low on the volley,  to make it 1 – 0 to Carew.

Milford United’s only chance of the half fell came after minutes when Carew were adjudged to have handled the ball 20 yards out but the shot was deflected for a corner. The resulting corner was met by Michael McCarthy but was headed off the line by Sam Lewis.

As the game was drawing to a close Milford pressed higher up the field and got caught cold on the break which ended up with a two on one where Carew sub Sean O’Neill helped striker James Adie to take his chance to secure the spoils for the south-county village side.

Carew: Dan James, Rob Davies, Paul Bullock, Sam Lewis, Joel Downes, Chris Stone, Tom Arthur, Mark Davies, Chris Tooze, James Adie, Jamie Heeps. Subs: Sean O’Neil, Rhys Davies, Harry Ryan.

Adrian Rees gave Herbrandston a hard-fought win over an Angle side which pushed them all the way in a final which certainly showed the quality of Division Five.

James Read played well for Angle in the heart of their defence but was unable to stop the winning goal as skipper Rees came up from his position at the back with less than ten minutes remaining to find the net with a vital goal.
