Venue: Kilgetty CC

Scorer: Janice Webb

The County Youth team put in an assured all-round performance in its first fixture of the season with a comfortable victory over a spirited Pembrokeshire Seniors’ team. Kilgetty CC hosted what was an excellent day of cricket and should be applauded for providing an excellent surface, a fabulous tea and a great welcome for all those involved, writes Jon Willington (coach).

Seniors build steadily

Seniors’ captain Ian Milsom won the toss and elected to bat first with the opening pair making a steady start against some tight bowling from Lewis Miller and Charlie Arthur. With the score on 46 it was Charlie Malloy who made the breakthrough by shifting Andrew Williams (13) in a spell where he constantly threatened the outside edge. Dessie Haynes though was in obdurate mood and patiently built an excellent innings of 44 including several boundaries. He found support from Jamie Phelps who made 22 before son Owen removed him courtesy of an excellent boundary catch from William Phillips.

Phelps grabs the key wicket

Simon ‘Doc’ Holliday came in and looked to accelerate the score, hitting one massive six over the clubhouse. But Phelps lured him in to one big hit too many, grabbing the key wicket, Youth skipper Charlie Arthur taking a good catch in the deep. The Youth’s bowling unit maintained control throughout the innings, backed up by an impressive display of ground fielding. Some late hitting from Filgi Varghese and Nick Daley looked to raise the rate but the Youth kept a stranglehold with Lewis Miller claiming the run out of Paul Webb and Finley Lewis castling Varghese.

Following a splendid tea the Youth set out to chase down 160 requiring exactly four runs per over. Rhys Daley and Lewis made a steady start as Rick Walton and Nick Daley bowled tight lines. It was Nick Daley who then removed his son Rhys for 7, the ball striking bat and pad and unluckily rolling back on to the wicket. Wil Nicholas looked in good form before Daley struck for his second wicket and soon after Steve Alford bowled Luc Owen to leave the Youth three down and give the Seniors a glimmer of hope.

Youth show their class to stroll home

Lewis though continued to build, striking six boundaries and along with Arthur began to put pressure on the fielders. Lewis finally fell to Holliday for an excellent 43 with the score at 93 for 4. Lewis Miller joined his skipper at the crease and these two proceeded to put together a classy unbeaten partnership of 71 to take the Youth home with 13 overs to spare. Arthur struck seven boundaries and a six in his 63 with Miller striking two boundaries in his 25. These two young talents gave a masterclass in rotating the strike, running between the wickets and manipulating the field as the Seniors had no answer.

And finally……

An excellent day of cricket was welcomed by an appreciative crowd with the Youth team showcasing the young talent that exists across Pembrokeshire. The game was played in a true cricketing spirit and it was great to see the Youth players coming together and enjoying the opportunity to represent their county.
The Youth now move on to their next fixture against the Wales XL (Forty Club) on 9th July at Herbrandston CC with eyes firmly set on another winning performance.
