Ollie’s outstanding in South Wales’ hockey success

South Wales Under 14s Hockey XI 4 - North Wales Under 14s Hockey XI 2

Greenhill School pupil Ollie Wheeler, who plays for Swansea City Hockey Club, having recently played in the South Wales trials, was selected to represent South Wales Hockey at U14's and this weekend travelled to Newtown to play North Wales.

Ollie hit the post in the first five minutes as he looked in sharp form and it wasn’t long before he set up the first goal for Matt Pinney (Llandaff & Caerphilly) which gave South Wales a narrow but deserved lead.

Storming second half

In the 2nd half Ollie slotted in a short corner to make it 2 - 0 and Rhys Bradshaw (Bridgend) also scored South Wales’ 3rd before North Wales came back and scored from a goal mouth melee and a penalty stroke to bring the score back to 3 - 2.

But Ollie widened the gap when he hammered home a first time shot from a through ball that he picked up in the North Wales "D" to make it 4 – 2 and also had several further chances.

He hit the post again with a ‘tomahawk’ shot and just before the end of the game broke from inside his half, running 50 yards and leaving the opposition in his wake to find himself one on one with the North Wales keeper, who was having an outstanding afternoon, and put in a terrific save.

But it mattered little because South Wales were good value for victory with Ollie Wheeler doing really well as the only representative in the team from Pembrokeshire.
