The Pembrokeshire County Swimming Squad, sponsored by Specsavers of Haverfordwest is currently in the final preparations for the 2015 Swim Wales Summer Nationals being held from 23 July to 29 July at the Welsh National Pool, Swansea.

Two members, Dan Davies [Tenby Dolphins] and Carys Thomas [Fishguard Flyers] are also representing Pembrokeshire Swimming at the ASA British Nationals being held in Sheffield.

As part of the build up to the 2015 Swim Wales Championships the squad, under the guidance of Development Coach Craig Nelson, recently travelled to Plymouth where a high percentage of the team reached their respective finals, many of them returning with medals as reward for their efforts.

Open swim success

Three team members participated in the 2015 Swim Wales Open Water event held in the lake at Parc Bryn Bach in Tredegar on Saturday 4 July. Swimming in water at a tepid 19.1 degrees around a 750m course, Rhys Davies of Fishguard Flyers won gold in the men’s open 750m wetsuit race, whilst two girls swam in non wet suit races, 16 year old Carys Thomas (Fishguard Flyers) gaining a silver in the girls 15-16 3000m event and 14 year old Louisa Twigg (Haverfordwest Seals) also gaining a silver medal in 13-14 1500m event in her first attempt at open water swimming.

Coach Craig congratulates his squad

Craig Nelson congratulated all his squad of swimmers for their accomplishments during the season and once again setting the barometer for future success within the County Squad.  “These young people are the ones every Development Club swimmer aims to be in the future,” he said, “and their commitment to training for the sport sees them being positive role models to the younger members.

“A team of 40 swimmers has been entered into the Summer Nationals and the expectations of my assistant coach, Sam Jones, and I are for the established positive building blocks to be built upon.  There is no reason why we can’t achieve and even better last year’s performance, which would be phenomenal in swimming circles for a county of our size.
