Herbie stroll home in table-topping clash with depleted Seniors A
Pembs Seniors A (90 for 3) lost to Herbrandston (91 for 1) by 5 wickets
The eagerly-awaited top of the table clash between second-placed Pembs Seniors A and leaders Herbrandston turned out to a little lacking in festive fizz as The Seniors had to play with only five men after a late withdrawal affected their battle plans – and they were restricted to 90 for 3 as the Herbie bowlers kept things tight.
The Seniors lost Andrew Williams for a duck as he was caught by Robbie Hood off Charlie Malloy but Karl Rhead seemed likely to continue his fine form but when he reached 20 in 15 balls he was bowled by Hood’s canny slow stuff – although Alan Webster showed his ability to score quick runs with a six and three fours in his 32 not out over two spells at the crease.
Stuart Carpenter crafted an excellent 25, including a typically stylish straight six, but the ‘old hands’ were never able to get totally on top of the Herbie bowling, with Kevin Bowen recording a rare low score as he came in a little late to really influence matters.
Herbie’s wicket-takers were Malloy (1 for 12), Hood (1 for 27) and Dillon Lewis, who is improving with every game and had figures of 1 for 17, whilst Atticus Kingston and Rhys Power also bowled economical mini-stints.
Then Malloy and Kingston got Herbie off to a cracking start as Malloy rapped 26 in 14 balls and Kingston hit 27 in 16 deliveries as they sailed past the 50 mark before both retired – but, as often happens after a good stand, Rhys Power came in and was bowled first ball by Kevin Bowen (1 for 22).
But Hood showed what an excellent all-rounder he is in this form of the game as he also scored 26 before retiring to ensure his team were home and dry before it was left to keeper Malloy and Dillon Lewis to be there at the end, with Malloy junior and Kingston still in the hutch, such was the comfortable nature of this important Herbrandston victory.
Seniors B struggle as Cresselly run amok with bat and ball
Cresselly (165 for 2) beat Pembs Seniors B (32 all out) by 133 runs
Pembrokeshire Seniors B suffered one of the heaviest defeats in the county’s history of indoor cricket as they were forced to chase leather when Cresselly smashed a massive 167 for 2 in their allotted ten overs and then the Seniors B team was shot out for 32 to suffer defeat by 133 runs.
To be fair to the B Team it was more a case of the Cresselly side being in top form than anything else because one couldn’t fault the effort of the ‘old timers’ against a potent mix of young talent like Griff Jenkins, Rhys Barnes, Charlie and Ollie Arthur alongside the experienced Neal Williams and Tom Arthur.
It was Williams (26) and Jenkins (32 in two visits to the crease) who got the village side off to a flying start as 80 runs came at the half-way stage of their innings, with Charlie Arthur (a blistering 38 not out) and his younger brother Ollie (24 not out) maintaining the momentum.
Rhys Barnes (14) and Tom Arthur (25 not out) added yet more runs so that they amassed an amazing 14 fours and 7 sixes as one B team bowler was despatched for 52 runs in his two overs, despite giving his usual 100% effort, with Jonathan Williams and Dan Griffiths taking a wicket apiece and both Ian Milsom and Mike Williams bowling relatively tight spells.
Jenkins then showed his all-round skills as he removed Jonathan Williams for a duck alongside Martin Thomas (10), both with the help pf catches by Charlie Arthur – and followed up with the dismissal of Ian Milsom (2), well caught by keeper Barnes, to finish a memorable evening with fine figures of 3 for 11.
Mike Williams (8) and Dan Griffiths(3) were run out and Julian Foster (1) was bowled by Neal Williams, a former Seniors’ player, whose one over earned him a 1 for 1 haul – and The Seniors B were dismissed in six overs – but will still be showing their genuine enjoyment for a game they love when they return to action in the New Year!!
Lightning strikes as The Town win well
Haverfordwest Lightning (124 for 4) beat Neyland B (86 for 5) by 38 runs
Haverfordwest Lightning confirmed their fourth place in the table going into the Christmas break with this comfortable win over Neyland B as Shan Pereira and Jake Merry’s batting took them to 124 for 4 before Mikey Jones and Johnny White shared four wickets to restrict Jamie Smith’s B team to 86 for 5.
Mikey Jones scored 10 before he was bowled by Smith (1 for 26) but then Merry and Pereira took charge as they raced to the 25-retirement score – with skipper Chris Phillips adding 19 before White (6) and Dylan Goodridge (4) came and went, allowing the Lightning’s top-two batsmen to emerge and make a second assault on the Neyland bowlers as they shared three sixes and five fours.
They also ran well between the wickets to keep the scoreboard ticking over and although Korey Arran bowled really well for his 3 for 29 haul alongside skipper Smith, the end product was a very challenging total for Neyland B to chase.
And a challenge it soon became evident was too big because although Iestyn Miles managed 10 there were soon other wickets falling against White (2 for 16), and Jones (2 for 21) alongside Jake Merry (1 for 6) and teenager Goodridge (1 for 20).
Smith (3), Mason (1) and Evan Roberts (0) didn’t stay long and Arran (14) fared a little better as only Charlie French ever looked settled as in his two spells at the crease, striking an excellent 40 runs before he was last out – and the Neyland final tally also had 17 from ‘Mr Extras’ from some loose bowling at times by The Lightning bowlers.
