MCC too streetwise for Hook youngsters

Centenary Match:

Combined teams, umpires and scorers

Hook (137 all out) lost to MCC (259 all out) by 122 runs

Umpires: Simon Richards & Jonathan Twigg
Scorers: Chris Holder & George Twigg

Hook continued their centenary celebrations with a special match against an MCC team which included top players from all over Wales and even further as far as London – and even though the young Hook team managed by Jon Willington  lost they enjoyed themselves and will have learned a great deal about playing at a higher level.

Paul Rees presents an MCC plaque to Hook skipper Aled PhelpsVisitors get off to a flying start

MCC elected to bat first and got off to a terrific start via openers Ian Bird (10 boundaries in his speedy 43, and Gabe Warwick (five fours in his 33) before both fell to Owen Phelps via a return catch and the other by his brother Aled, from a good Jacob Lay catch.

Top run-maker Sam Pearse departed cheaply as Owen Phelps was the bowler and Owen Willington the catcher – but Steve Evison was piling on the runs at the other end alongside Mark Burton (35, including seven fours) until he went for one boundary too many and skipper Aled Phelps caught him to give Bradley Flood a wicket, and final figures of 2 for 44 as he also removed John Davies later on.

Evison seemed sure of three figures but fell to Rhys Phelps having belted 14 fours and a six in his 88 – and it was the start of the bowler’s excellent spell of 4 for 17 in five overs before the MCC innings ended on 259 runs.

Early set- backs as Hook suffer quick losses

Looking for a good start to chase down such a big score Hook suffered a real set back as Liam Miller and Aled Phelps departed for ducks before Rhys Phelps and Daf Bowen redressed the balance a little until the former batsmen was bowled by Davies for 36 (seven fours).

Bowen attacked well as he slammed ten boundaries en route to top score of 45 but after he was adjudged lbw to Sam Pearse Hook also lost two more wickets in the same over, with neither George James or Lewis Miller troubling the scorers – and with Pearse finishing with 3 for 13 and two maidens in his four overs.

Owen Phelps (17), Jacob Lay and Jack Phillips all managed double figures before Hook ended up all out on 137, but having enjoyed their experience although they would have liked to score a few more runs.

And finally . . .

Afterwards, Jon Willington told PembrokeshireSport.co.uk
“We’ve had a wonderful day and everyone agreed it has been a great success, with the MCC players as terrific visitors whose captain Paul Rees has already expressed a desire to return in the future as they admired our facilities, which include the fantastic new nets and electronic scoreboard.

“We had a lovely tea supplied by our ladies and a good crowd led by Evan Martin, our most senior and respected former player – and everyone enjoyed themselves in the bar as well afterwards.”
