The Ken Morris Memorial Cup was brought to an exciting conclusion at Narberth as Carew Thirds held a two-run lead at the half way stage and managed to edge out Hundleton by the narrow margin of four runs in a game that was played in the right spirit and a credit to Pembrokeshire Cricket.

REPORTS AND SCORECARDS

FIRST INNINGS:

Veteran Hicks takes total control

Carew skipper Steve Cole chose to bat first and although Carew lost talented teenagers Ethan Hall and Jac Scourfield without scoring, plus Cole himself for 9, the class of former Welsh international Robbie Hicks shone through as he helped The Rooks to 60 for 3 at the half way stage.

Hundleton’s opening bowler Robson Walkey claimed all three in his excellent five-over spell that saw him finish with figures of 3 for 30.

The departure of Ashley Lewis (6) and Corey Hall (9) meant that Carew stood at 84 for 5 after 15 overs but then Hicks took total control with a string of boundaries that took him to 11 in his unbeaten 72 – and the final total was helped by ‘Mr Extras’ with 24 that included 20 wides.

Hundleton drift after good partnership

Hundleton also lost an early wicket as Paul Fox (6) was caught at mid-off by Ashley Lewis off Ethan Hall – but then they settled via the experienced Jonathan Williams and Ben Adams, who advanced the score to 86 in the 15th over before Williams was bowled for 31 (including three fours) by Ashley Lewis.

14 year old Logan Hall then shifted Adams for 31 (two boundaries) adjudged lbw, and followed up at the same score of 103 by having Craig Williamson (3) beautifully caught by skipper Cole, who showed his joy at such athleticism!

Logan Hall made it an excellent short spell of 3 for 11 as he bowled Steffan Williams and then his brother Corey bowled David Lockyer (0) and Stuart Midgley (6) to end up with 2 for 35 alongside twin brother Ethan’s earlier 1 for 23.

As a result of that late loss of wickets Hundleton finished two runs behind at tea, despite having been presented with 33 extras (30 of them wides) so they might have hoped for a decent lead when Williams and Adams were going well!

SECOND INNINGS:

Hicks and Scourfield help Carew to a useful score

Robbie Hicks and Ethan Hall (14) added a quick 34 to open The Rooks’ second innings before the latter was bowled by Craig Williamson, with skipper Cole departing to Ben Adams for a single with the score on 40.

But Hicks found a willing ally in Jack Scourfield, whose fielding had been outstanding, and Hicks moved slickly to 35 before he tried to take a sharp second run and a direct hit with only one stump to aim at, saw Stuart Midgley claim a key run out.

Scourfield took over the reins with a maturity beyond his mid-teens and Ashley Lewis managed double figures before he became Adams’ second wicket, adjudged lbw, and Scourfield was eventually removed for 40 (five fours), bowled by Jonathan Williams, who was the pick of the Hundleton bowlers with 3 for 29.

On this occasion the extras tally was reduced to 14 and with Carew finishing on 135 for 8 it meant Hundleton needed 138 for victory.

Richard Morris presents his dads trophy to Steve Cole

Hundleton push hard – but fall just short

Hundleton changed their batting order and Craig Williamson and Paul Fox made a solid start as they moved to 32 without loss after five overs but Fox (17) gave a simple return catch to Archie Smith Williamson (16) fell to an outstanding running catch in the deep by Jac Scourfield - and bowler Ethan Hall made it two vital victims when Steve Cole took another catch that any 52 year old would be proud of to get rid of Jonathan Williams!

Ben Adams (28) and Robson Walkey (22) looked good but Logan Hall shifted both, the former to lbw and the latter to skipper Cole’s catching prowess – but kept in the hunt as Carew conceded another 29 extras!

It meant that Hundleton needed 17 runs from their last four overs but they were unable to raise the temp as Logan Hall bowled the dangerous Stuart Midgley for a duck and when David Lockyer needed four runs to take the game to a ‘golden over’ he was unable to do so as Ashley Lewis kept his nerve in a tense final over.

Man of the Match Logan Hall with adjudicator Craig Butland

And finally . . .

It meant that Carew Thirds won the trophy for the fourth time in their history and Hundleton were left to reflect on what might have been.

Competition organiser Richard Howell conducted the post-match presentations and thanked everyone for their support and welcomed members of Ken Morris’s family to make the presentations – and was rightly thanked by Steve Cole for all that he and wife Rhian, plus parents Heather and John, have done again to make the Ken Morris Memorial Cup so popular!

Man of the Match adjudicator Craig Butland outlined the performances in all four innings and highlighted the outstanding performances by Carew’s Jac Scourfield and Connor Davies behind the stumps. He gave a special mention to veteran opener Robbie Hicks for his two fine innings but received huge applause when he said that the winner was 14 year old Logan Hall for his 3 for 11 and 3 for 33 bowling spells!
