Lewis Harley Davies is building a reputation in the Fishguard and Goodwick area as a very promising young sportsman who at 14 years of age is scoring tries galore for Ysgol Bro Gwaun and the local rugby club’s junior section.
But Lewis also loves playing football and is netting goals aplenty on the football pitches of the county for Fishguard Sports U14 team.
Powerhouse No 8
He started playing tag-rugby in the U8s for Fishguard & Goodwick with Nigel Roche and started to enjoy it much more when it became ‘contact rugby’ in the U10s.
He took a bit of time to find his position, but soon proved that No. 8 was the one for him. His height, strength and speed means that he has the ability to break through the opponents easily in order to score as many tries for the team as he can.
Lewis is a good ball carrier and has managed to run from not only the kick off to score a try, but also from as far back as his own 22 to score. He has a lot of power and he really does take some stopping! His tackling skills are second to none – the size of an opponent doesn’t bother him.
Passion for the game
It is fair to say that Lewis has a real passion for the game and in matches for Ysgol Bro Gwaun so far this season he has scored 10 tries. Not content with that little lot, in club matches with Fishguard and Goodwick RF, so far this season he has scored 17 tries as proof of his scoring capability!
On a recent weekend he was asked to play up a year for the Seagulls U15s and even then managed to score three tries against Pembroke – to show he can also play well against older players. Small wonder then that in a relatively short career he has already been chosen twice as ‘Player of the Year’ and on another occasion was voted as the ‘Most Dedicated Player of the Year’.
Favourite team – and comments from coaches
Ask Lewis about his favourite rugby team and he would be quick to answer “Wales, followed by the Scarlets”, whilst his favourite player is undoubtedly Toby Faletau, the Newport Gwent Dragons and Wales star who also plays in the No 8 position! He travels to Parc y Scarlets as often as possible to cheer the Scarlets on, usually accompanied by his rugby-playing pal Robbie Jones.
Emyr Hughes, who teaches Lewis at Ysgol Bro Gwaun told us,
“Lewis has great all-round potential and is naturally big, strong and fast. He backs this up with an excellent work ethic and as he improves his technical ability he will be one to watch for the future.
Jonathan ‘J.J’ Jones, who coaches at Fishguard and Goodwick RFC, echoed that view as he told us,
“Lewis is an excellent prospect because he is not only an able player but is very keen to learn, and his attitude rubs off on others. He still doesn’t quite realise just how good he could be and once that happens – look out!”
Family matters – and a start in football
That Lewis should be so good at sports is perhaps only natural because his dad Nigel was a proven goal-scorer with Fishguard Sports amongst other teams and is still involved at the club. Mum Julie is also a great supporter and both have travelled many miles in watching Lewis play, as they have done with Lewis’s older brother Ryan, another talented sporting all-rounder. He is also eagerly supported and watched by his granddad, Reg Davies.
On the football front, Lewis has played most of his time at Clarbeston Road AFC, which he joined at U8s level with Jason Wood as coach, until U14s when he transferred to Fishguard Sports AFC because most of his school pals play at St Mary’s Field
Gary’s glad Lewis came home
Whilst at ‘Clarbie’, Lewis played as a midfielder or striker and scored more than his fair share of goals. As a result, he was chosen as ‘Player of the Season’ at U13s and his team were the runners up in the U13s Pembrokeshire Cup, losing 2-1 to Camrose in a very hard-fought final.
He has continued his role as a proven goal scorer this campaign because in just eight games at Fishguard Sports AFC under the watchful eyes of Andrew ‘Hoppy’ Hopkin and Gary Hall as coaches he has scored an impressive tally of 14 goals.
Gary Hall told us,
“Lewis makes such a difference to our team because he is so strong, but skilful as well. But most important of all he is an excellent team player and is always ready to listen to advice”
And finally . . .
It is clear that Lewis has natural flair for both his chosen sports but this is backed up by a willingness to learn, as alluded to by all his coaches, and also to his determination to be fit because he enjoys his visits to Fishguard Leisure Centre, where takes part in circuit training and some work on the weights.
Lewis Harley Davies is certainly a player to watch and will be interesting to see which sport he eventually specialises in. There is one thing for sure – whichever it is we at PembrokeshireSport.co.uk are sure to hear a great deal more about this talented teenager in years to come.
