County Schools’ hold their own against Afan Nedd
The Pembrokeshire County Schools’ Football squad played their most recent round of the Tom Yeoman Festival against Afan Nedd Schools at Bridge Meadow last Sunday.
Pembs A 0 - Afan Nedd A 3
Pembs never really got into the game and were second to the ball time and time again. The boys looked sluggish and their passing was poor. They went 1-0 down very early on and couldn’t pick themselves up. Afan Nedd had some very fast, skilful players who were just too strong for Pembs on the day.
Pembs A 1 - Afan Nedd B 0
Pembs started off much more brightly and showed some good passing football between Joel Mills, Teejay Gardner and Iori Badham. Finley Davies once again covered a lot of ground and some quick inter- passing saw Pembs have several goal scoring opportunities. Leon Davies and Charlie Phillips defended well and Ferdy Stevenson-Shield looked sharp in goal and kept a clean sheet.
The Afan Nedd keeper played very well and denied Luke Thomas, Dylan Morgan and William Malone from putting Pembs ahead. Joel Mills scored for Pembs and then they defended desperately to win an exciting match
Pembs B 1 - Afan Nedd B 2
In their first match the Pembs B took a while to settle into a pattern, but defenders Iori Humpries and Archie Hillier-Wood gave Pembrokeshire a solid base to build from. It was an open game with Pembs pushing forward, in particular down the flanks, with Joe Evans and Ollie Teagle stretching the Afan Nedd defence, but looking vulnerable against the counter attacks.
Archie Smith scored the opening goal of the game but Afan Nedd equalised soon afterwards and when Pembs were pushing forward the opposition intercepted the ball and scored the winner.
Pembs B 1 - Afan Nedd A 0
The second game saw an enthralling match with both sides striving to score. The hero of the day was Rhys Mansell in the Pembs goal who was battered and bruised, but determined to keep a clean sheet – and he was definitely the player of the match. Josh Smyth had several close shots and Iwan Howells worked tirelessly throughout the game. Kieran Blundell and Macs Page were outstanding and after relentless pressure on the Afan Nedd goal an own goal put Pembs in the lead. Afan Nedd threw everything at Pembs but Rhys Mansell denied them time and time again.
Well done to all the boys for a spirited performance.

** Previously Pembs played Aberystwyth at the University Playing Fields.
The A squad won their first game 4-1 with Teejay Gardner scoring a hat-trick and Finley Davies scoring the other Pembs goal. In the second game they went 2-0 up with Joel Mills and William Malone scoring in the first half. Aber came back with two quick equalizers and despite Pembs have numerous goal scoring opportunities that third goal was illusive.
The B squad lost their first game 3-0, but battled desperately in their second match. Ollie Teagle scored the all important equalizer to keep Pembs in the game. Rhys Mansell made a very good debut and is a real find
