Pembrokeshire powerlifters succeed at British Championships

Seven of Pembrokeshire’s and Wales’ finest powerlifters travelled to Alexander, in Scotland  to compete at the 2015 British Championships and again returned to the county with a string of new records and medals to show for their efforts..

First up in Group One were Lucy Elcomb in the 60kg open class and Penny Phillips in the 67.5kg master 50+ class, setting personal bests in all their lifts and easily winning gold in their respective classes, with Lucy squatting 90kg, bench-pressing 40kg and deadlifting 110kg with a total of 240kg.  Penny squatted 90kg, bench-pressed 40kg and deadlifted 105kg to total 235kg.

Young lifters show huge potential

Group Two saw the young Haverfordwest man Liam Lynch back on the platform in the 75kg junior class and showing he is back to form by smashing all the world raw records with a 200 kg squat,  140kg bench press and 201kg deadlift. Liam now holds world records for equipped and unequipped /raw deadlift.

Next up from Carew was Andrew Murphy (90kg junior), who squatted 270 kg, benched 130 kg and deadlifted 210 kg for a 610kg total and a superb gold medal. Andrew has been lifting for just one year and has gained 200kg/440lbs on his total in that time.

“Andrews’s 270kg squat equals 3 x bodyweight and is an amazing achievement at just 20yrs old,” said his father and mentor Paul Murphy.

Old timers also do well

Group 3 saw Narberth’s Adrian Phillips (90kg master 50+) ever improving as he squatted 215kg, benched 135kg and deadlifted 230kg for a 580kg total and a well-deserved silver medal.

Paul Murphy (90kg master 45+), who is still recovering from injury, had a disappointing outing to take a silver, squatting 285kg, benching 150kg and deadlifting 270kg and 705kg total.

And finally, in Group 4, Pembroke’s Aaron Hoskins again showed why he's the No1 ranked 125kg lifter in the world with an easy 380kg squat, 230kg bench and 290kg deadlift for a huge 900kg total which again earned him the gold medal.
