The winning Herbrandston team

Herbrandston (97 all out in 9.4 overs) beat Pembroke Seniors (76 for 1 in 10 overs)

Herbrandston showed real skill to beat the ‘Golden Oldies’ of local cricket as they batted well to build a reasonable tally but then bowled and fielded tightly so that some very talented cricketers in the Seniors’ team found it difficult to maintain any sort of tempo in the second half of their reply.

As a result, they only managed to score 29 runs in the second half of their allotted ten overs - and that included two sixes from Stuart Carpenter from the last two balls, otherwise it would have been more of a snails’ pace!

Harry Nicholas led the Herbie batting as he scored a boundary-laden 42 from his two spells at the crease before he was run out with only two balls remaining, with support from the teams old timers in Rob Kingston (12) and Dai Malloy (10) before both fell to the mesmeric slow stuff stuff of Rob Nicholas, assisted by Mark Hicks and Kevin Bowen.

Bowen again showed what a terrific all-rounder he is in the indoor game as he also caught Tom Philpott (21) and Atticus Kingston (3) respectively to Hicks (1 for 13) and Seniors’ skipper Ian Milsom (1 for 14) before Charlie Malloy was bowled by Carpenter (1 for 19) as the village side settled on 97 all out.

Steady start before an enforced ‘go-slow’

Bowen and Neal Williams then got the Seniors off to a steady start as they put on 47 at the half way stage and in with a genuine chance of victory before Williams was bowled by Rob Kingston for 22.

Bowen retired, as he usually does, on 25 but then Carpenter and Nicholas found it hard to get going as 13 runs came from the next four overs for the Welsh Veterans internationals. Much of the credit for that goes to the excellent field placing and tight lines bowled by Atticus Kingston (0 for 16) and his dad Rob (1 for 7), plus Charlie Malloy (0 for 9) and Nicholas (0 for 15), with Charlie’s dad Dai placing the fielders from behind the stumps.

Tom Philpott took 2 for 11 in his first over before having his figures dented by 17 runs in the final over - but it mattered little because by then the Seniors had used up 31 deliveries without scoring, slightly more than half of their allowance as proof of their difficulty of scoring quickly, as they normally do!

Cresselly (52 all out in 7.5 overs) lost to Burton (53 for 3 in 6 overs)

Dan Llewellyn - Runs, wickets and catches for BurtonCharlie Arthur - scored the bulk of the Cresselly runsCresselly’s inexperience of indoor cricket was very much in evidence against Burton as only Charlie Arthur (36 out of their total of 53) batted with any conviction so that ‘Mr Extras’ was next top scorer with five runs - and although they suffered a couple of hiccups Burton were good value for victory as Dan Llewellyn was their star player, with runs, wickets and catches!

The father and son opening partnership of Tom and Ollie Rowlands have been in good form for Cresselly but both departed for singles, with dad bowled by Llewellyn and son run out in a mix-up - and the ubiquitous Llewellyn then bowled Archie Hillier-Wood (2) and shifted Tom Arthur to finish with 3 for 13 as well as catching Griff Jenkins (0) off Matthew Davies (1 for 7) and finally Charlie Arthur  off Morgan Scale (1 for 13) as Cresselly’s experienced skipper Stefan Jenkins was missed in their batting line-up.

It looked as if Will Ridge (17) and Llewellyn (21) might ease Burton home without losing a wicket but both fell in quick succession before Tom Rowlands pouched catches from Tom Arthur (1 for 14) and Ollie Rowlands (1 for 6).

Lewis Thomas was run out without scoring but then Dan Ridge (11) and Morgan Scale (3) took Burton to deserved victory and Cresselly gained more valuable experience of the needs of the indoor game.

Hundleton (81 for 5 in 10 overs) lost to Pembroke 2nds (83 for 0)

Billy Wood - More big hitting from the Pembroke PowerhousePembroke Seconds showed their club’s strength in depth as they continue to feature at the top of the table following this easy win over near-neighbours Hundleton.

David Lockyer was adjudged lbw without scoring as Hundleton batted first, but Steff Williams and Dylan Davies put on 44 runs before Davies was run out for a hard-hitting 22 and Williams retired on 25.

Craig Williamson also chipped with a strong 17 not out but the innings ended quickly as Archie Reeves ((0) and Jonathan Williams (1) came and went - and his namesake Steff returned but was caught and bowled by Billy Wood (1 for 14).  Will Davidson-Randell (1 for 11), Charlie Perkins (1 for 19) and Ceri Brace (1 for 17) were the other Pembroke wicket-takers as 11 extras helped Hundleton to a final tally of 81 for 5 in their ten overs.

It was the sort of total that sometimes puts chasing teams under pressure but Pembroke made no mistake as they strolled home without losing a wicket after Brace (23 not out) and the hard-hitting Wood retired on 29 having belted another three fours and two sixes to add to his ever-increasing total of boundaries.

As Brace adopted the Anchor role Will Davies also showed his class as he stroked a four and two sixes in his undefeated 29 and all the Hundleton bowlers found it hard going against some attacking play as Pembroke strolled home in 6.3 overs.
