Men's Indoor Cricket - Division One - 3rd December 2023

Division One:

Excellent wins for Neyland B and Llanrhian

Venue: Neyland Community Hub
Umpire: Chris Stapleton
Scorers: Rachel Sander (Pembroke Dock) and Ginny Davies (Pembroke)

Neither Neyland B or Llanrhian have enjoyed the best of seasons so far so it was nice to see them with full teams for their respective fixtures against Pembroke A and Pembroke Dock - and deserved victories as a result.

Neyland B shock high-flying Pembroke A

George Evans - bowled and batted well for Neyland BPembroke A (81 all out in 9.5 overs) lost to Neyland B *83 for 4 in 7.5 overs) tally and after a shaky couple of overs in their run chase eased home as Corey Riley and Dai Davies produced outstanding performances.

Pembroke arrived for this fixture still in high spirits after their outstanding win over Nayland A in their most recent match but found that club’s B team in no mood to go the same way as they dismissed Pembroke for a disappointing total.

Pembroke’s opening pair of Jack Harries and Luke Butler made their usual lively start before Butler was caught behind by Dai Davies off Riley for 13 (13 deliveries) and Jack Harries retired at 25 and returned later but was also removed by Davies off Riley having reached 30 in only 18 deliveries.

Then the Neyland pair switched roles because as Pembroke lost Alan Webster (1) and Sam Davies (27 at a run a ball) it was Riley who took the catches off Dai Davies – and to add to Pembroke’s woes Paul ‘Chalkie’ White was run out for a single and Hassan Aziz also departed with one run to his name, bowled by Paul Miller (1 for 18).

Other successful Neyland bowlers were Davies (2 for 7) and Riley (2 for 16), whilst Iestyn Myles and George Evans also bowled well.

Neyland B’s innings followed a similar pattern as Lewis Page (17 in 12 balls) and George Evans (22 in 12 balls) got them off to just the start they needed before falling respectively to Hassan Aziz (1 for 24) and Sam Davies1 for 4 in one over).

And then Paul Miller (1) was run out and Miles was bowled by White (1 for 13) – but they had the experienced Davies (16 not out) and teenager Richards (17 not out) still left with plenty overs and they paced things well in finishing with 13 balls still in hand.

Llanrhian regulars find some form

Llanrhian (130 for 4 in 10 overs) beat Pembroke Dock (108 all out in 9 overs)

Richard Reed - played well for LlanrhianLlanrhian bounced back to something like their best form as Richard Rhead inspired them in the batting stakes, supported by some of last season’s regulars as they reached a healthy final total and then they bowled and fielded well to restrict five-man Pembroke Dock, for whom Tom Grimwood was outstanding, to 108 all out, and therefore defeat by 22 runs.

Rhead showed what a good player he is with 32 runs after retiring on 25 but getting himself run out in the evitable late chase to increase their tally – and he had excellent support from Tom Clarke (29 not out) and Iwan James, who scored 17 before he gave a return catch to Nick Daley (1 for 8).

Llion Williams also chipped in with a handy unbeaten 21 but Billy Clarke (7) and Karl Davies (14) both fell to Adam Phillips in his 2 for 30 spell.

The Dock lost opener George Smith, caught by Tom Clarke off Karl Davies for a single, and Adam Phillips (3, lbw to James,) but then Rhys Daley scored 17 before he was James’ second scalp in an excellent 2 for 14 haul.

That brought together Tom Grimwood and Nick Daley and this last pair for The Dock batted really well but gradually fell behind the required run rate and Grimwood finally departed with a boundary- laden 48 – and Daley reached 32 before he was run out last man. It was a brave rearguard action by two good exponents of the indoor game but Llanrhian were worthy winners in the final analysis.
