Men's Indoor Cricket - Division One - 10th December 2023

Wins for Neyland A and Hook - One easy, the other a close contest

Venue: Neyland Community Hub
Umpire: Allan Hansen

Neyland A bounced back from their shock defeat in their previous match to beat their B team, who ally were unable to field only four players but sportingly wanted to fulfil the fixture - and Hook edged out Pembroke Dock in a real thriller where the result was in doubt until Hook reached their sizeable target with two balls still in hand!

A solid all-round display helps Hook edge home

Pembroke Dock (111 for 3 in 10 overs) lost to Hook (112 for 3 in 9.4 overs)

Jacob Lay - Batted well for HookScott Griffiths - Led Pembroke Dock by examplePembroke Dock got off to a disappointing start as opener Adam Phillips (0) was bowled by Aled Phelps, who was the pick of the bowlers as he claimed 1 for 7 in his two overs.

But ‘old timer’ Nick Daley (24) and skipper Scott Griffiths both batted really well to put on 51 until Daley (24) was caught by Jacob Lay off Bradley Flood and skipper Scott Griffiths retired on 26.

Tom Grimwood chipped in with 10 but fell to Lay (1 for 30) before George Smith came in far lower than usual and found something like his best form with a hard-hitting 28 not out and Griffiths finally returned to the fray to reach 38 not out as he put on late runs with Chris Edge (6 not out) in a respectable final tally of 111 for 3.

Regular Hook openers Liam Miller and the very experienced Daf Bowen both reached 13 as they set off in pursuit but fell respectively to Nick Daley (2 for 15) and Tom Grimwood (1 for 21), both to catches by Griffiths, and Hook were a little unsettled as Aled Phelps (9) was run out when he looked to be moving up a gear.

Lay (27) put them back on target, however, until Daley struck again and Smith (1 for 21) removed Bradley Flood (11) but Callum James came in last man to reach 21 not out as 16 from ‘Mr Extras’ undoubtedly helped to eventually swing the game Hook’s way.

Neyland B suffer the consequences of player unavailability

Neyland B (33 all out in 3.3 overs) lost to Neyland A (37 for 1 in 2.1 overs)

Ashley Sutton - caught the eye again for Neyland AThe derby match between the Neyland A and B teams was certainly one of the shortest ever in the history of local indoor cricket as the entire game lasted a total of only 5.4 overs before the senior side benefitted from facing only four players.

The B team sensibly batted first and welcomed back their best player in Steve Murray and he scored a quick-fire 22 that included a five, two fours and three threes before he fell to the ever-reliable Andrew Miller (1 for 13).

His knock apart the B team was unable to offer much as Jamie Smith (8) belted a 6 before he was run out and both Iestyn Myles (2) and Sam Laugharne (0) were clean bowled by Ashley Sutton as part of his 2 for 2 short stint.

Sutton then joined skipper Paul Murray at the crease and with only three fielders to circumnavigate the runs flowed from the outset before Sutton (10, a four and two threes under his belt) was bowled by a delighted Sam Laugharne (1 for 18).

Murray (14 not out, consisting of two fours and two threes) was joined by Ross Hardy, who blitzed a six and two fours in his quick-fire 15 not out before Myles bowled one delivery and was despatched to the boundary by Murray to take his team to victory in only 2.1 overs!
