PFAC pays tribute to stalwart Nica Prichard MBE
A well-known Newport resident received a surprise visit from some of her colleagues last week.
Nica Prichard is a life-long angler, has represented her country on several occasions as a member of Welsh Ladies Angling Division, and in Newport circles is very closely involved with the Nevern Angling Club and Newport Boat Club.
In 2009, Nica was awarded the MBE for her services to angling and the environment, and it was about this time she became one of the founder members of PFAC, the Pembrokeshire Federation of Angling Coaches, bringing together like-minded individuals who wanted to give something back to the sport.
Since that time, Nica and her fellow coaches have, in Pembrokeshire, introduced many hundreds of children and people of all ages and abilities to angling.
Taking a dip to celebrate Welsh success – in her 80s!
Now well into her 80’s and following her decision to ease back on her coaching commitment, her fellow coaches felt that this should not be allowed to pass without recognising the huge contribution that Nica has made to PFAC.
Accordingly, a group of her fellow coaches was welcomed by Nica at her Newport home where, helped by her close friend Becky, refreshments were served and many a story told.
In particular, Nica recalled being recalled to the Welsh Ladies fly fishing team at the age of 80. The team went on to win gold and she and her team mates celebrated by jumping into Llyn Clywedog!
During her lifetime, Nica will have gazed on many a leaping salmon and it was felt fitting that she should be presented with a climbing, fragrant rose, aptly named “Leaping Salmon”!
Thank you, Nica for all you have done for the angling community, and beyond.
