The Apollo’s Amateur Boxing Club is centred on Pentwyn and Llanedeyrn, two housing developments on the outskirts of Cardiff, and when they recently held an evening of boxing at the Mercure Hotel in the capital city, it was 18 year old Kyle O’Sullivan who won both the night’s top awards and older brother Alex (22) was only just behind as he completed a terrific family double as he was in the top-of-the-bill final bout and was a clear winner there.

Both box out of Merlin’s Bridge ABC and in their corner was head coach Graham Brockway and their father Wayne, himself a two-time Welsh champion in his younger days. All three are part of a boxing dynasty from Goodwick, alongside Wayne’s brother Chris, another Welsh champ, who now owns the S7 Fitness Centre in Haverfordwest – and the boys’ grandfather Terry and great uncle Dacka.

And the boxing tradition continues because their older brother Sion (25) has had four bouts and younger brother Alfie (13) has already had five bouts and it is a common sight to have seen dad and all four boys training hard together at Merlins Bridge.

On the recent evening in question, it was Kyle’s first senior contest and he entered the ring for the ninth of 12 bouts on the programme, where he was boxing against Daniel Cousiero, who was three years older and on home territory, - but after ten bouts at junior levels and some fantastically hard work in the gym that his commitment paid off over three action-packed rounds which had a large and very enthusiastic crowd cheering on his opponent, it was Kyle whose arm was raised aloft as winner.

He was delighted to receive his trophy but things got even better at the end of the evening as he and his opponent Daniel were called back into the ring to receive the ‘Best Bout of the Evening’ trophies to great acclaim from the crowd – and perhaps even better he was recalled by the MC because he had been adjudged the ‘Best Boxer of the Evening’ to see him making the long journey back to Pembrokeshire with three fine trophies!

Brother Alex took on home-club boxer Harvey Williamson in the final contest of the evening in what was his 43rd appearance in the ring and he needed all the knowledge acquired over such a long time to earn the points’ decision over an opponent who is highly ranked at their weight but was outthought by Alex as his defence was outstanding and he was that vital bit quicker in throwing vital punches in attack that clearly caught the eye of the three officials sitting ringside.

Both Alex and Harvey are likely to be boxing in the Welsh Championships later this year and could well meet up Cardiff, and it is a certainty that Alex will somehow train even harder for those championships because there is nothing he would like better than to follow dad into receiving a coveted Welsh vest!

Like their father, who was a hugely successful player and manager, the boys have all been brought up with Goodwick United Football Club and Sion is a member of the first team squad that is doing so well whilst Kyle set out at Phoenix Park but is currently playing well for the Academy team at Haverfordwest County.

Alex also loves his football  with Goodwick and so does Alfie, who plays for the under 14 team coached by his uncle Chris – and they all readily admit that they must mention the most important family member in mum Moira, who organises all their kit (even washing the under 14s team’s complete strip) and transport in a highly efficient manner!
