Men's Indoor Cricket - 11th January 2023
Umpires: Chris Stapleton & Steve Williams
Scorers: Ginny Davies and Ian Milsom
Venue: Neyland Community Hub
In the second division games on Wednesday evening it was Pembroke who won both their matches as Pembs Vets B also claimed their first success of the season, a real nail-biter by one run against Hundleton.
Typically though, all the action took place in the right spirit as the season is coming towards a conclusion, with the play-offs coming very soon now!
Hundleton just miss out in nerve-wracking final over
Match One: Pembrokeshire Vets (124 for 4) beat Hundleton (123 for 5)

A superb innings of 64 not out by Alan Webster helped the Pembrokeshire Vets B team gain their first win of this indoor season but not before they had been pushed all the way Hundleton in a nerve-tingling finale where Jonathan Williams was last-man standing for the village side and after thumping two sixes in the final over needed a third from the final delivery by Julian Forster but could only manage a four to leave them a tantalising run behind their opponents.
That Hundleton allowed the Vets B to reach such a big score came as a result of their over-eagerness in the field after opener Webster and No 3 Karl Rhead had retired on 25 as Danny Griffiths (5) and Mikey Williams (13 were run out early on.
It left Steve Thornton (4) and Julian Forster (2), both experienced cricketers, at the crease but with neither renowned as massive hitters, both were run out by eager Hundleton fielders to unleash the whirlwind that released Webster and Rhead to re-join the fray in the final four overs.
Rhead finished on 35 not out but Webster made Hundleton pay for earlier missed half-chances as they grabbed 64 runs in that time, 6 threes, 2 fours and 7 sixes in the course of their innings, with David Lockyer as the pick of the bowlers with 1 for 13.
Chasing such a big score, Hundleton had Dylan Davies run out for a single but Steffan and Jonathan Williams in good form before they had to retire before Rhead showed his all-round talents by clean bowling Robson Walkey (1) and Lockyer (10) – and Stuart McNiffe (2) and Steffan Williams (29) were run out.
That left Jonathan Williams on his own and he showed the batting skills that have marked him as a very good and loyal cricketer for over 30 years with the club – and he reached an undefeated 54 before that final, fateful boundary that had The Vets celebrating success but heaving a huge collective sigh of relief!
Pembroke recover from a dreadful start
Match Two: Pembroke (117 for 4) beat Hundleton (50 all out)

Pembroke started as favourites to win this south-county local derby against Hundleton but when they batted first they suffered early setbacks as key run-getter Jon Rogers and Charlie Perkins were both clean bowled for ‘golden ducks’ by Stuart McNiffe from his 2
nd and 3
rd deliveries.
But luckily for Pembroke they had skipper Jack Harries continuing his terrific run of form with a speedy 25 before retiring, and returning to finish undefeated on 42 after Luke Butler contributed 24 before getting himself caught by Robson Walkey to give McNiffe superb figures of 3 for 10 which saw only three scoring shots from his 12 deliveries.
Sam Davies also showed his ability to bat well with a terrific 41 in a late run chase with his captain to send Pembroke to a healthy 117 for 4, which included 22 threes, four fours and four sixes as Jonathan Williams (1 for 25) was the other Hundleton wicket-taker.
Pembroke’s good fielding certainly showed as Hundleton set off in pursuit, with no fewer than five catches from Butler (2), Davies and Harries (2) as Steffan Williams (12) and David Lockyer (16) were the only batsmen in double figures after Davies had departed for a duck, Robson Walker contributed 6 runs and McNiffe (1) was run out.
Hundleton were dumped out for 50 in only 6.4 overs as Perkins (1 for 7), Davies (1 for 15), Rogers (1 for 12) and especially Will Randall-Davidson (2 for 12) did all the damage as Pembroke won by 67 runs.
Pembs Vets B ‘run out’ of wickets
Match Three: Pembrokeshire Vets B (74 all out) lost to Pembroke (75 for 2)

Pembroke completed a double success on the evening with a comfortable win over the Pembrokeshire Vets B, who created something of an unenviable record as ALL SIX of their batsmen were run out as their opponents fielded really well.
Batting first, The Vets B lost Julian Forster and Danny Griffiths for 3 apiece, soon followed by Steve Thornton (9) before Mike Williams contributed 15 - but Alan Webster, who wrought so much havoc in his earlier innings, was run out for 6.
It left Karl Rhead, coming in late at No 5, to show he still has class, to top score with 32 before he was last out after seven overs as his side hit 16 threes and a solitary 6 before literally ‘running out’ of wickets.
Pembroke again started well with a 50 partnership in good time by Jack Harries and Jon Rogers, who made up for his earlier disaster with a typically hard-hitting 30, with a six struck just prior to retiring.
Harries was again a class act with 26 not out before taking a rest and although Charlie Perkins (10) and Sam Davies (0) fell by the wayside to Webster and Griffiths it mattered little as Luke Butler and Will Randall-Davidson knocked off the last few runs to ease Pembroke home.
